Arch Women

There is a new project starting up called "Arch Women" Its a group for female Arch Linux users and the guys who support them. The main goal is to make the arch community easier for women to get involved in.

The site accepts contributions from anyone who would like to write an article.

Am i the only one who is a bit puzzled with all the Linux_(insert minority/group/religious cult/sexual preference/whatever)_ organizations and distributions. It feels like these people discriminate themselves on purpose. Like linux (or any distro for the matter) ever excluded someone.

Plus its the internet. Noone knows or cares about what you are.

PS.
But we know for a fact that there are no girls on the internet

The previous discussion was unproductive and about trivial, impertinent stuff. Arch Women has existed for over half a year. They have been engaged in several projects. Currently their focus is on two, Arch Linux Classrooms and Arch Linux Install Day. I hope future discussions are of what they have done, what they will do, and how people are willing to help.

It's funny how often I have seen the comments about Linux minority groups. I participate in the #archlinux IRC channel. It's a minority group. It's composed of Arch Linux users who have something in common: they communicate using IRC. I participate in Arch Women. It's a minority group. It's composed of Arch Users who have something in common: they want to encourage women to participate in the Arch community.

Good initiative! I wish you luck. BTW an Arch Linux woman role model that you might want to point out is Swedish Pirate Party's MEP Amelia Andersdotter, who is (or was?) an Arch linux user.

For those critical of special interest groups: Those groups are formed because people feel a need for them - who are you to define the needs of others?

Nice and interesting effort girls!

I've already dragged my girlfriend into Arch succesfully. Two years ago she was using Window$, then she tried Ubuntu, she liked it, but my custom DE was more attractive to her (at the time, an OpenBox session), so she asked me to teach her how to build her own GUI. She never looked back .

It's really just about open-mindness and patience.

To add to what you said. Whenever I bring up computer-stuff in conversation, people not only intentively listen, they also are genuinely concerned and interested.

People are asking me things like, "I have ubuntu in a vm...what do you use and what do you like?" I say, "I use archlinux, you can turn it into what you want and it's great."

All other things being equal, they are being productive citizens of society, I stumbled on their website through serendipity like a month ago and whatever those people talking down on said about arch women were wrong.

This sounds like a really cool idea to be honest. I don't know anyone personally who uses Linux everyday let alone Arch...and getting women into Linux/Arch is awesome.

It's a bit sad some people hacked the site, how long has it been down? Looks like over a month (last modified 23 jan i think?)

Is the project still running?

Actually, anyone still using "There are no girls on the internet" meme in 2017, needs to really re-evaluate themselves. When the meme started in the 1990s, it was because the internet user base literally was 95% male. It was part of a larger sad self-depreciating joke, that in 2017 would be considered in bad taste. The entire point of "There are no girls on the internet" meme was to ward off the super desperate types who'd fawn all over the "internet girls", most of which, who in 1995, where in fact "men" pretending to be women for the attention. Some of them where legitimately trans-somethingoranother, but a lot of them where just catfishing people. It was also said nerd to nerd to discourage people acting fucking pathetic as fucking hell on chat all for a person who they'd never meet in real life, and would be utterly disgusted by.

in 2017, yes, there are girls on the internet. The context of the original joke is long lost, and to many people here this is before they where literally born. No one gets the original joke. Not only are there a lot more women who enjoy this hobby, its actually possible to be a straight male computer hacker who goes outside and gets laid.

2017, we finally are starting to get some respect from larger society, and we really need to start acting with some. In 2017, there are girls on the internet, and the internet is, I repeat, is, actually serious business.
