I've been looking through various forums and google searches and have not found a solution that works for this.
I'm not an avid gamer, but i do want to show my support for Valve acknowledging us linux users.
Steam installs from multilib without any errors and lib32-ati-dri/ati-dri have both been installed.
Multiple other lib32 items have been installed through troubleshooting, but i mistakenly did not keep track.
OS: Arch 64 bit
Mesa graphics drivers
OpenGL renderer gallium 0.4 on AMD RV730
OpenGL 3.0 mesa 9.1
OpenBox
Dual Monitor
When i open Steam from the application menu, nothing loads.
When i run Steam from cli, the license agreement will pop up, I hit accept, then get the errors listed below:

My output was different and so is my hardware, but the problem seems to be with OpenGL. Installing Catalyst made Steam work as normal again.

I've debated switch to catalyst. I will give that a try tonight.
Thank you for the suggestion.

Update, catalyst is not going to work.
Going to need to figure a way to get this working while using mesa.

My output for trying to run steam; nothing happens if i try to run steam.
I am using the proprietary nvidia driver (lib32 is also installed), so obviously it is not just a graphic driver issue.
There was an update for steam yesterday i think, so probably thats the problem, because before steam was running like a charme.

There has been 2 updates to Steam in the time i have been trying to get it running, and it has not been working for me at all.
So at least on my system it looks to be something on my end. Just haven't been able to narrow it down.

Maybe a driver problem? Did you take a look into glxinfo, if there is everything okay?

From what I have pulled from glxinfo it all looks clean.
Direct rendering is on, OpenGL up to date, Mesa Driver up to date.
glxgears also runs without glitch.
Anything specific beyond those i should be looking for?

Has anyone tried removing ~/.local/share/Steam like in the update notification?
I have my Steam library in its own directory outside of the default and all games installed there. I can run Steam with the FOSS ATI drivers after deletion of the above-mentioned directory.

Yes i have removed
~/.local/share/Steam
& ~/.steam
both yield the same results.

Hello,
I also had trouble running Steam about 2 days ago. The Steam client had downloaded an update, but failed to install it and didn't start either.
Here is what I did:
-I created a file named steam.cfg in my Steam folder ~/.local/share/Steam and inserted the line BootStrapperInhibitAll=enable inside it. It fixed the issue for me.

Adding in this config file still yields the same results.
Thank you for the suggestion though.

Update. I seem to be narrowing it down.
i uninstall (manually) all 32 bit ati drivers, then reinstalled the correct ones. There were quite a few that were just hanging out breaking things.
Now when i run steam, there is no errors but it hangs on loading the drivers
Hangs on this line:
Running Steam on arch 64-bit
STEAM_RUNTIME is enabled automatically
Installing breakpad exception handler for appid(steam)/version(0_client)
libGL: OpenDriver: trying /usr/lib32/xorg/modules/dri/tls/r600_dri.so
libGL: OpenDriver: trying /usr/lib32/xorg/modues/dri/r600_dri.so
Then nothing, just stays there
