Everything working out of the box. Adding the famous acpi_backlight=vendor to the kernel line lets pm-utils or whatever automatically drop the brightness to 50 percent. I'm also getting over 4 hours of real world use on the battery if I'm not playing a lot of music and Flash, so me likey. The laptop works very well with any distro I've tried, so it's no surprise.

Re: Laptops which run Arch

Asus eeepc 900, everything works except for volume control (I need to link the fn switch with the volume keys to alsamixer). Currently using awesomewm and kernel-netbook, floating mode gives me around 2 and a half hours of battery life with the brightness all the way turned down.

I did see a guide on how to boot into Ubuntu from Windows but after that, it was pretty much toying around. Remember that it is the Surface Pro (x86 architecture) and not the RT.

Re: Laptops which run Arch

Just wanted to share my experiences with my ASUS K53SC that I use in the office. This notebook comes with Intel HM65 chipset, an Intel i5 2430M CPU and an Intel HD 3000 + nVidia GeForce 520MX combo (I replaced the HDD with a Corsair Force SSD, plus add an extra 4GB DDR3-1333 RAM module). Everything works out of the box, I use Arch x86_64, everything was set up in a few days. Switching graphics work like a charm with bumblebee, I just happened to play a bit of Serious Sam 3 today (at decent speed I might add). By killing bluetooth and using wifi only when needed, plus insalling dimdeamon from AUR, my battery life is a stunning 4 hours if I'm just doing my regular office tasks.

Pioneer Dreambook U14 - Clevo reseller I believe.

Everything worked out of the box except I had to add ”i8042.reset i8042.nomux i8042.nopnp i8042.noloop” to GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX to have my Sentelic touchpad detected at startup.

Re: Laptops which run Arch

Notebook: MSI GX60 1AC-021US
Runs Arch: Yes

Problems:
  1) issues recognizing the ethernet adapter (still haven't, not an issue atm); wifi worked out of the box.
  1) Fixed: I installed dkms-alx from the AUR, I rebooted, then I setup a wired static ip connection. After that, I ran ping -c 3 www.google.com -- works perfect! :D
  2) ati prop. drivers, I get blank tty's when switching from gui to cli (opensource drivers didn't have this problem); I can run commands blindly.
  2) Fixed: I done this (at the very bottom) - works perfect now, :\.
  3) Still haven't gotten the webcam working; haven't tested the mic(s).
  3) Fixed: Pressed fn+f6 then opened Skype - worked; mics work, too -- I feel stupid.

Re: Laptops which run Arch

HP Elitebook 8730w

Intel T9400 4GB RAM
Nvidia FX2700m
250GB 7200RPM hard

Beautiful piece of machinery and runs like a charm.

The other one is a T410i
i5-430M 4GB RAM
Quadro 3100M

For both of these machines everything runs pretty much out of the box, there was no need to do too much troubleshooting to make anything work.

This is a very Linux-friendly little laptop that comes in different configurations regarding its main components (as well as the keyboard: it may be ordered with a backlit one if you wish) and preinstalled OSes (Windows range or Ubuntu / no OS). The only part that stands out a bit is multitouchpad (Alps), but it works well with a tweaked module from the AUR. Briefly: a very decent, efficient piece of hardware that won't ruin your budget and should let you do your job for years.

Re: Laptops which run Arch

ACER v3-571
Intel® Core™ i5-2450M CPU @ 2.50GHz Sandy Bridge
Intel GMA 3000 and Nvidia Geforce 630M (works supergreat with bumblebee and Steam games)
8 GB DDR3-1333 RAM
500GB WD 7200rpm HDD

Kernel: 3.8.3-1-ARCH

Arch works superb with this laptop, there are only small issue such as brightness not working using any plugins (Fn keys still work) for the moment with this kernel.

Re: Laptops which run Arch

MBP 9,2 (Macbook Pro 13' Jan 2013)

Dual boot Arch Linux - Mac OS X using rEFInd. I didn't succeed to boot Linux from a blank disk. Apparently, the EFI from Apple doesn't read the EFI partition to find the boot loader but some directory, of the Mac OS X partition.

The wireless worked immediately after installing b43-fwcutter.
I used xbindkeys for the special keys. Sound volume, screen luminosity and keyboard backlight all working fine. Pommed doesn't play well with systemd so I didn't use it.

I have a Belgian keyboard which works fine using the French - Macintosh configuration (french and belgian keyaboard are the same on Apple)

I had to install blueman (GTK+ bluetooth manager) to have the Apple bluetooth keyboard and magick trackpad to work.

Re: Laptops which run Arch

The Toshiba Satellite L855-S5280P has a nightmare of a networking setup; the ethernet port has to have a driver compiled, which requires build-essential, which requires an internet connection if you don't have hours to download dependency after dependency and move them via a flash drive. The Realtek wifi chipset is the only way to get a connection, and even on Windows, it drops the connection frequently. In Linux, well... it took me a full weekend just to get that card alone working long enough to set up Arch.

But if you've got the dedication, you can make it work. It's definitely worth the time I put into it now that I have a fully functional Arch system.

Re: Laptops which run Arch

For the ThinkPad T420 with Nvidia graphics (and I would guess, T430/T520/T530), Arch works very well if you set the BIOS to Legacy Boot or whatever (not UEFI), set to discrete graphics only, and turn off hardware virtualization (not sure why this is necessary, but it works great now). Everything else worked out of the box.

Re: Laptops which run Arch

HP Pavillion dm1-4341sa

ATI Radeon 7340 works using catalyst from Vi0L0's repository, including HDMI. I can't get VLC or mplayer to behave with xvba-video, but xbmc seems to do the job.

Boots without issue for linux<3.8 in BIOS and EFI; EFI using rEFInd fails for some 3.8.x versions unless you use a GNU-EFI compiled rEFInd binary, in which case it works perfectly.

Needed to tweak my .asoundrc to get the right sound card considered as default (otherwise defaults to HDMI, so no speaker sound).

Stock wireless works great (Ralink 3290), but no Bluetooth support (unless this has any substance to it...). HP motherboards have a whitelist, restricting each model to only a very small subset of "approved" WiFi/Bluetooth chips,so I used the HP service manual for my model to find an alternative chip (Broadcom 4313) with Linux support. As per the wiki this replacement chip has disconnection problems with the FOSS driver, but broadcom-wl(-dkms) works perfectly.

Touchpad works just fine, though the touch-sensitive button to enable/disable it appears to be a unique feature of the Windows driver.

Toshiba Satellite C660-C!
It is a really low-end machine, though it flies with arch. Hardware worked out of the box.
