[SOLVED] Kwin extremely slow...

After the update to mesa to 9.1-2, Kwin is extremely slow with OpenGL 2 shaders. I'm using the latest xf86-video-intel and intel-dri on a HD 4000 in a X230 (laptop). Right now I turned off OpenGL 2 shaders, it seems to work fine.

Anybody else having similar issues?

EDIT: was resolved in 4.10.1-1

I have the same issue, and disabling OpenGL2 shaders works as a temporary fix.  The drivers will probably get patched soon to get this fixed.

Re: [SOLVED] Kwin extremely slow...

Odd, I haven't noticed any difference in speed and I just checked and have that option enabled. I'm also using the intel drivers.

By chance budabob07, are you using HD4000? Chances are that 3000 isn't affected.

Also a quick look over at bugs.kde.org doesn't turn up anything similar, and I have no idea where Intel's bug tracker is.

Re: [SOLVED] Kwin extremely slow...

can confirm after the update! although, in my case, it is not always "extremely slow"...more like, sometimes it works at normal speed, and sometimes it takes 3-4 seconds (for instance when using the desktop grid)
disabling OpenGL 2 Shaders helps, can confirm. Specs: Intel i7 with HD4000. I'll give my netbook a spin as soon as I find some time...it runs on another intel card.

Cheers

Re: [SOLVED] Kwin extremely slow...

I noticed the performance regression also. Starting for example desktop grid works pretty much normally. Picking a window or a desktop from the grid also works, but there's a three second delay. The issue also affects the application switcher (I'm using grid) - the delay here is about 3 seconds also. Desktop cube also works normally as does for example switching desktops using slide.

Switching from OpenGL to Xrender fixes the performance issues but with Xrender you can't use all the plugins. Turning of the shaders works for me too.

Intel i5, HD4000

Re: [SOLVED] Kwin extremely slow...

A workaround (disabling Lanczos filter for Ivybridge and mesa 9.1) will be available in KDE 4.10.1 (which is to be tagged today).

Today I bisected mesa 9.1 and found the first bad commit and reported to kwin devs (https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=313613). Hopefully, kwin devs will find a proper solution with the help of mesa devs.

Updated today and found it slow only with "present windows" effect.

I have extremely slow kwin too after update to kde 4.10 but i change the UXA to SNA and everything works fine now. If you go try, see this https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Intel_Graphics

Oh! I was under the impression that SNA was the default. I can confirm that this works, however, there are some artifacting issues, I'll try to reproduce it and edit this post.

As well as performance issues, it's seems to jitter and transitions aren't as smooth. Now I'm going to have to have a look at some games if there's any difference there smile.

Re: [SOLVED] Kwin extremely slow...

SNA doesn't work for me with "present windows" effect just as UXA.

Hi, sorry for my reopening of this thread, but i've your same issue with my notebook and Intel Hd 3000. I opened a new thread: https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=166383
Please tell me if anyone had some news about it, thanks!
