[SOLVED] Trying to get ipod to mount/automount, not working

Hi all,

I've searched around a few times and still am not turning up anything on this.

When I plug in my ipod, it powers up and charges but doesn't automount.  I ran lsblk to try and find it but I turn up nothing, just my harddrive and my cd-rom

$ lsblk
NAME MAJ:MIN RM SIZE RO TYPE MOUNTPOINT
sda 8:0 0 698.7G 0 disk
|-sda1 8:1 0 4G 0 part
|-sda2 8:2 0 80G 0 part /
|-sda3 8:3 0 1K 0 part
|-sda4 8:4 0 14.7G 0 part
`-sda5 8:5 0 600G 0 part /home
sr0 11:0 1 1024M 0 rom

I read in another post to try removing 90-libgpod.rules from /lib/udev/rules.d, but I wasn't sure why and it wasn't clear in the post.  I moved the file to a temp folder instead of deleting it and still the same issue.  When I run dmesg and I get:

[290599.753317] usb 1-2: new high-speed USB device number 21 using xhci_hcd
[290599.769659] usb 1-2: ep 0x2 - rounding interval to 8 microframes, ep desc says 10 microframes
[290599.769668] usb 1-2: ep 0x81 - rounding interval to 8 microframes, ep desc says 10 microframes
[290599.776767] usb 1-2: ep 0x2 - rounding interval to 8 microframes, ep desc says 10 microframes
[290599.776775] usb 1-2: ep 0x81 - rounding interval to 8 microframes, ep desc says 10 microframes
[290698.766983] usb 1-2: USB disconnect, device number 21

when I plug in my external harddrive I get the same first message, but the next two messages are identification information.
I'm assuming there is a driver or something I don't have installed?  I ran pacman -Ss ipod and i get

extra/libgpod 0.8.2-6 [installed]
A shared library to access the contents of an iPod
extra/libimobiledevice 1.1.4-2 [installed]
Is a software library that talks the protocols to support iPhone and iPod
    Touch devices on Linux
community/gtkpod 2.1.3-1
A platform independent GUI for Apple's iPod using GTK3
community/ifuse 1.1.2-2 [installed]
A fuse filesystem to access the contents of an iPhone or iPod Touch

tried installing gtkpod, just for s+g's, but I'm on a really slow internet connection, so it's going to take a while.  Figured I would check here and see if anybody had any ideas...

I used my wife's ipod cable at the house, checking this cable right now....

Okay, my windows computer recognises it (work computer), and I can access the file information, well, the pictures anyways which is what I use it for.

gtkpod didn't seem to make any difference, still trying to make heads-tails of the ipod wiki

Re: [SOLVED] Trying to get ipod to mount/automount, not working

Still looking for a quick-fix while examining a long-fix, not to into it today though, bout to shut it down for the day.  Hopefully there will be something here in the morning or I'll be able to understand what I'm reading better and get a solution together.  Don't know if it matters but I'm running the standard Arch with XFCE, just in case it's thunar related, but since I don't see it on the command line I assume not.

I googled

xfce ipod won't mount

and I got this:

http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1895488

(It was only the second hit by the way, wink wink)

It looks like it COULD be a xfce issue.  Keep in mind that the thread is from 2011, so it could of been fixed by now and it might be something else that's the problem.

The op in that thread solved it by installing nautilus(Gnome file manager).  Another person installed clementine(music player) and was able to get to his device.

I have wasted atleast a second of your time by making you read my signature.

Re: [SOLVED] Trying to get ipod to mount/automount, not working

Hmm, that is so odd, but I'll try it out.  Kinda hesitant to install nautilus, but if it makes life easier in the long run, I have no love for thunar.  I find it lacking in several ways.  Just didn't figure to look for the problem in XFCE

Re: [SOLVED] Trying to get ipod to mount/automount, not working

looking into this gigolo thing right now, thinking about just putting KDE on my box, lol.  If that doesn't work I'll try nautilus.  Wish my internet was faster but oh well, I got time to kill while I'm at work.

Re: [SOLVED] Trying to get ipod to mount/automount, not working

Okay, aparently it is an XFCE problem, something about thunar using its own version of the Gnome plugin for hot swapping drives.  I don't want to install a bunch of heavy Gnome stuff on my box, but looks like I have to.  I accidentally marked this post solved before I completely tested it.  Gibolo is not seeing it, and I stupidly thought I saw my ipod, but it's SDA4.  Guess I'll kill this gibolo thing unless it works for mounting SD cards, we shall see.  I'm going to keep surfing for an option besides nautilus because it will not play well with XFCE from what I've heard (or it would already be on my machine tongue )  Okay, back to searching....

Re: [SOLVED] Trying to get ipod to mount/automount, not working

before installing all this things, can you run dmesg to see what is happening?

also take a look here: https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=131358

One guy in that thread installed clementine(a music player) and was able to get it "working" on xfce.  I guess it's more of a hack.

Re: [SOLVED] Trying to get ipod to mount/automount, not working

Well, whatever I did worked.  Did a system restart and now not only is my ipod just mounts when I plug it in.  I removed gigolo and its dependencies, restarted again, still working fine.  Maybe it just needed a restart after installing nautilus??  Maybe it was gtkpod or one of the other things I installed, going to work backwards and see if I can find the clencher, but I'm guessing that nautilus did it.

Re: [SOLVED] Trying to get ipod to mount/automount, not working

I think it was the gvfs files that I installed.  There were 3 that looked useful but were not installed on my system, just maybe needed a restart to get them working?  I think I tried logging off and back in during that process somewhere, but when I rebooted my machine, then it just started automounting.  Didn't have to mess with ck-start-session, the config files are all back to normal, and udiskie is the only thing that was modified from the original system in that regard (I think).  It's working in banshee too, even though I don't really need it to, it's nice to know that it's there.  Now I can ***edited to keep things PC***.  My co-workers are still looking at me funny since I exclaimed "I finally mounted my ipod".  They are all windows and mac users.  Now I can start working on this bloody SD cardreader (don't really need it either, I have other means) working and scanning over a network and this baby will be up-to-snuff for all my work requirements.  Thanks guys for the suggestions and help.

Re: [SOLVED] Trying to get ipod to mount/automount, not working

Hello, I've recently been having the same problem, but in Gnome 3.8.
Could you detail what packages you installed?
I've installed a couple gvfs, gtkpod and libgpod, but Imy iPod is still not detected, the weird thing is that this was only recent, around the time the 3.10 Kernel update

It seems that today's upgrade to 3.10.6-2 all problems are fixed smile
