[solved] Graphic output freezes every ~12 seconds

Hi,
I have got an old Laptop, HP compaq nx6110. I installed arch linux and LXDE. Tested the following with Openbox only as well.

The whole screen freezes every ~12 seconds for ~1 second (mouse, terminal, youtube vid). It seems to only affect graphics output because audio works uninterrupted. Tried with a youtube video, audio plays uninterrupted and video freezes.
First I thought it could be something hardware related so I made a HDD image and installed LUbuntu. LUbuntu doesn't have that problem.
So it has to do something with Arch but I have no idea what it could be.

Graphics card is an Inel Mobile 915GM. The i915 is loaded.

Hope someone can help me because it is anoying to work with these interrupts and I don't want to use LUbuntu...

Re: [solved] Graphic output freezes every ~12 seconds

Can you attach your /var/log/Xorg.0.log ?

dmesg > ~/dmesg.log and attach dmesg.log from your home directory too...

Re: [solved] Graphic output freezes every ~12 seconds

All clean there, as far as I can tell,

run as root

cat /sys/kernel/debug/dri/0/i915_error_state

what does it say ?

If it says no error state collected than it shouldn't be a video driver  issue, probably related to either interrupts or high CPU usage. The easiest thing is to watch for processes that consumes a lot of CPU time with top utility. You could install smartmontools and do

smartctl -a /dev/sda

and check for any signs of errors.

If all of this fails, you could try to increase verbosity in dmesg as explained here: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Boot_Debugging

But be warned, increasing log levels gives a lot of debugging info so please, paste it to a file and attach it here if it comes down to that.

/edit: reboot=pci kernel parameter, you intentionaly added that, had any problems before ?

Re: [solved] Graphic output freezes every ~12 seconds

First of all, thanks for helping.

cat /sys/kernel/debug/dri/0/i915_error_state gives no error state collected.
smartctl -a /dev/sda gives me some pre-fail warnings but all values are above the threshold. Waiting for the long self test to finish...

Will try the verbosity thing later this day or tomorrow.

Rebooting ended with a message "Power down" or so. Laptop still running but nothing happened anymore and reboot=pci was the solution for this.

Re: [solved] Graphic output freezes every ~12 seconds

OK, I've found this (look at the end of the bug report)

https://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=43267

and this

https://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=51161

I was hoping that we will see any of the GPU hung messages in dmesg, are you sure that those are the messages when display freezed out at least once ?

One last thing you could try is to enable SNA: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/In … ion_method

Re: [solved] Graphic output freezes every ~12 seconds

It seems that I made a mistake looking for the cause of the freezes. Shame on me.

It's hard to tell if there's a short freeze when watching pacman updating the system or watching a video on youtube so I was moving the mouse constantly. This way I knew that it happens if the mouse pointer stops moving.
So these freezes just happen when moving the mouse. There's no difference between touchpad and usb mouse. It seems that there are also extremely short freezes when I hold a key pressed but I'm not 100% sure about that.

So I think this couldn't be a problem with the graphics card. Perhaps some interrupt thing.
It definely happens every 10 - 11 seconds but only if I move the mouse. It doesn't matter if I stop moving the mouse between two freezes. So there has to happen something periodical which causes this but only if I move the mouse (or pess a key).

I tried with nothing else than top running in lxterminal after starting Openbox with CPU idle at 96%. Then I ran stress and had the same behaviour at 100% CPU load (also same time between freezes).

Re: [solved] Graphic output freezes every ~12 seconds

OK this is a stretch (because you report that the same thing happens with usb mouse) but try with some of these kernel parameters (in the same way as reboot=pci)

i8042.noaux     [HW] Don't check for auxiliary (== mouse) port

i8042.nomux     [HW] Don't check presence of an active multiplexing
                             controller
i8042.nopnp     [HW] Don't use ACPIPnP / PnPBIOS to discover KBD/AUX
                             controllers

i8042.reset     [HW] Reset the controller during init and cleanup

most of all reset and nomux.

Re: [solved] Graphic output freezes every ~12 seconds

Hi
I tried all these options but that changed  anything. So I decided to blacklist all the modules not needed for booting and finally the i915.
After blacklisting i915 there was no freeze anymore. So the problem has to do directly with the i915 driver.

What I did then was looking which module options got set in Lubuntu and changed those on arch to fit.
No success with that. Then I figured out that on arch there is an option Lubuntu doesn't have. It's called preliminary_hw_support. No plan what this does. It was set to 0 so I tried with setting it to 1 but no difference.

The kernel version Lubuntu uses on my installation is 3.5 so perhaps there was a change or arch/Lubuntu pached this driver?

Re: [solved] Graphic output freezes every ~12 seconds

Preliminary hw support is support for Haswell and Valley View IGP's - so this shouldn't have any effect on your setup.

I don't know what you could do next except this:

debug ignore_loglevel log_buf_len=10M print_fatal_signals=1 LOGLEVEL=8 earlyprintk=vga,keep sched_debug

to add next to the reboot=pci kernel parameter. Brace yourself for some serious printk flooding, when output starts to freeze do a:

dmesg > ~/dmesg.txt and attach this file somewhere for us to see.

I suggest you add these lines in grub by pressing key "E" on the Arch Linux menu item. If you do this in grub.cfg you will have it on the next bootup and I don't think you want this debug level as default smile

If we don't find any errors in logs there is no way we could have the slightest idea what's wrong.

Did that. Here's the file: http://www.speedshare.org/download.php?id=8A16573C1

Edit: When I don't blacklist i915 openbox needs ~20 seconds to start after login. With i915 blacklisted it needs ~5 seconds.

Re: [solved] Graphic output freezes every ~12 seconds

OK I've missed corrupted EDID message sad

I don't know why it tries to load EDID from VGA1 output when I presume you have only LVDS connected (laptop screen).

What does

xrandr --query --verbose

give ? If it reads that VGA-1 is connected (and it isn't) try to disable VGA-1 output with video=VGA-1:d kernel parameter.

I don't know if you gave a chance for video to freeze when you posted dmesg.txt, cause it's showing only 22sec since the kernel image loaded... You would have to wait at least couple of minutes before doing dmesg > dmesg.txt for eventual error to show up in dmesg.

Spurious TV/VGA output detection was giving me headaches back in the days with the 965GM chipset, had to do the exact same thing with video kernel parameter.

Also you could try to fire up KMS early as described in https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/In … Setting.29

Re: [solved] Graphic output freezes every ~12 seconds

OMG, I had my KVM switch connected all the time. Did that after I got the laptop but I didn't really use it because it just cloned the output and streched it to the higher resolution what made it fuzzy. When I switch to the port the laptop is connected at the problem suddenly stops so it seems that I have a buggy KVM switch (though I have no problems with other devices).

I'm sorry for not thinking about that and wasting your time on this.
Thanks, I greatly appreciate your effort.

Re: [solved] Graphic output freezes every ~12 seconds

No problem wudu, if I had noticed EDID error on VGA-1 for the first time you've posted dmesg output we would find the culprit already smile Most important is that both of us learned something new in the process and that the problem is solved...

/edit: Try to swap VGA cable from laptop to KVM and see if that helps, maybe it's damaged...
