Re: The AMD/ATI Bar & Grill

I spoke too soon. After rebooting,  my computer is totally unusable.  The mouse appears but I can't move it, there is a bunch of multicolored static on the screen, and after using tab to login to gdm, Gnome puts me in fallback mode and I can't access any applications. It seems the upgrade totally hosed my system.

This really sucks.

I tried running "aticonfig --initial" again, but it didn't help.

Re: The AMD/ATI Bar & Grill

Ok, I downgraded xf86-input-synaptics and xorg-server-common, and now my cursor works again. Hooray for me.

But I still have a bunch of "static" on my screen: 33z2r5w.jpg

Strewth, see this post on creating thumbnails: https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=61754 ompldr also supplies bbs code for such things too.

Also placing code tags around output: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Fo … s_and_Code

Re: The AMD/ATI Bar & Grill

I put the code tags in as requested. But using my computer like this hurts my eyes and gives me a headache.

Re: The AMD/ATI Bar & Grill

I assume that before all this xorg-server fun it was working for you without a screen disco?
When using xorg113 repo you don't have too downgrade any package manually, just place it above all other repos and
pacman -Sy
pacman -Suu
Don't forget to add my gpg key. If problem persists paste your /var/log/Xorg.0.log

Re: The AMD/ATI Bar & Grill

I downgraded xorg-server-devel, added  xorg113 repo (and the key), ran pacman -Syu, let it upgrade mesa and wayland. Still the same. Saw your post, ran the commands. Still the same.

Here is my /var/log/Xorg.0.log:

Re: The AMD/ATI Bar & Grill

The problem is here:

[ 18.475] (EE) fglrx(0): atiddxDriScreenInit failed. Probably kernel module missing or incompatible.
[ 18.475] (WW) fglrx(0): ***********************************************************
[ 18.475] (WW) fglrx(0): * DRI initialization failed *

I assume that you are using catalyst from [community] - have you installed catalyst-dkms?

is fglrx loaded?

lsmod | grep fgl

can you load fglrx?:

modprobe fglrx

maybe radeon module was loaded?:

lsmod | grep rade

if yes - blacklist it.

Re: The AMD/ATI Bar & Grill

lsmod | grep fgl

and

lsmod | grep rade

return nothing.

modprobe fglrx

gives

modprobe: FATAL: Module fglrx not found.

Yes, I have catalyst-dkms installed. I'll try reinstallinng it and catalyst-utils.

Re: The AMD/ATI Bar & Grill

Otherwise fglrx module won't be build for updated kernel.
I assume that with xorg-server update you have also updated linux from 3.7.x to 3.8.x, because dkms service was disabled fglrx module wasn't build for linux 3.8.x.
Run

systemctl enable dkms

to enable it

Re: The AMD/ATI Bar & Grill

Lesson learned, always read the Wiki smile https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Ca … repository

Also, Robotman, you can ignore packages in /etc/pacman.conf, so you don't always have to type them.

Re: The AMD/ATI Bar & Grill

How about ZeroCore functionality?
Since I'm using non-composite dekstop (on my media server that's on 24/7/365/and-so-on). i3 to be precise. And I'd prefer low power consumption. I have already bought Opteron 3380 to minimize energy usage when idle. Setting ZeroCore up would be next. I have R 7850 so it should be able to enter ZeroCore mode.
Does aticonfig have some switch to activate ZeroCore (it had a non-commercial, more technical, name also... can't remember what atm.)?

P.S. I've googled around but haven't found any actual guides of how-to...

Re: The AMD/ATI Bar & Grill

I never before tested ZeroCore but you get my attention on it.
It looks like it should work out of the box on both linux and windows.

On the linux i ran:

xset dpms force off

which should work, unfortunately my gfx fan didn't stop to spin.
So i logged via ssh, aticonfig didn't show anything interesting, just whined about not running xserver.
I then ran powertop to check power consumption and i saw that there was nothing related with fglrx (normally fglrx is on the top of the list), but maybe it's just because i turned off X output tongue
Maybe there's some better tool to check out power consumption but I don't know about it, i don't even have time to google it atm.

On the windows:
- on power options you can specify to turn off monitor after 1 minute and wait....
- or download nircmd and run it from cmd with

nircmd.exe monitor off

After doing this i saw that my gfx fan is still working, huh...

So i guess that there are 2 possibilites:
- zerocore is working but it's unable to turn off fan because my card is not a referent model
- zerocore is not working at all

Btw: if you are interested on power management i would recommend you to check out the amdoverdrivectrl package, with it you can overclock/overvolt or underclock/undervolt your GPU.
Even if it won't let you go over default values, you can prepare your own .ovdr file and load it easily.

amd has updated 13.1
amd once again has updated their 13.1 driver with just a minor changes on amdpcsdb/control files, i've updated aur packages yesterday, probably tomorrow i will update [catalyst-stable] repo

Vi0L0:
I'll try your tips and report my results. I don't have reference card either. Mine is XFX Radeon HD 7850 Core Edition 2GB.

I think you coud get best result from reference cards, yes. But if you have a 3rd party manufacturer that's using reference PCB you could have positive results too. I don't have any clue if mine has reference PCB or not. :\

Re: The AMD/ATI Bar & Grill

Well reading this thread kind of scares me...
I just black-listed xorg packages and that's that. I have no problems (yet). This is what scares me. I mean, I have no idea why it's still working.
Should I do anything about it, or just try my luck?

There's also something I wanted to ask for a long time, but didn't. Anyone managed to get a seamless graphical boot with proprietary drivers? Is there anything that isn't dependent on KMS?
I tried Plymouth, but that changed resolution all the time and really didn't look seamless at all.
But adding quiet to a kernel line almost does the trick of removing most of the boot processing data which I don't really need (as the entire boot process takes around 30s).
So if anyone know how to get a simple background, ideally something where I can just use .jpg picture that would be great!

EDIT:ArchWiki doesn't mention KMS or anything that would work with proprietary ATI drivers, so I think Fbsplash is the way to go...

You should use one of the inofficial catalyst repositories that contain the older X because these repositories will be updated as necessary.
There are apparently some for 1.11, 1.12 and 1.13: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/AM … positories

If any of these libraries receives an "incompatible" update that either changes how they work internally or that changes their filename, your ignore'd X.org will probably stop working.

Well reading this thread kind of scares me...
I just black-listed xorg packages and that's that. I have no problems (yet). This is what scares me. I mean, I have no idea why it's still working.
Should I do anything about it, or just try my luck?

You should use one of the inofficial catalyst repositories that contain the older X because these repositories will be updated as necessary.
There are apparently some for 1.11, 1.12 and 1.13: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/AM … positories

This will look similar to you:

 $ ldd /usr/bin/X

Yeah I've add that that repository, but it didn't do anything, so I figured that I don't need it. I added it back,  just to be sure.

BTW this is how ldd looks for me:

Re: The AMD/ATI Bar & Grill

Hi,Vi0L0:

First of all, thank you for your work. But I still have some problems with catalyst.
I heard about that catalyst has solve the problem about temperature. But the problem came up again on my PC.When I choose Intel card,my lm_sensors returns 44-47C.And if I switch to AMD card, the temperature maintains 54-60C.When I open an application, the temprature come to 65C or even higher. But before I didn't meet the problem.

Another problem, when I run aticonfig --odgt or sudo aticonfig --odgt,either of them worked.Terminal returned
ERROR - X needs to be running to perform AMD Overdrive(TM) commands
I googled it , only to get few solutions. And it didn't work such as setting DISPLAY as :0.0 or :0.Is this related to temperature problems?

here is some information

Re: The AMD/ATI Bar & Grill

I'm not entirely sure if this is the correct place to post this. But I think it could help someone.

I recently had the fun of finding out about catalyst not supporting Xorg 14 and had various attempted to fix this by downgrading Xorg. Eventually I downloaded the xorg113 package but with still no luck (X didn't load on start up or on startx). There appeared to be a seg. fault just after

 [    18.609] (==) fglrx(0): hotplug detection: "enabled"

unfortunately I've got it working since and I've lost the log file.

I fixed this by switching from Vi0L0's [catalyst-stable] repository to his [catalyst] repository. I'm not sure if this is a problem with the [catalyst-stable] repository or just my particular set up. But I thought it may be useful to look into.

Thanks,
anstow

Re: The AMD/ATI Bar & Grill

@ssfdust:
you made a typo in your xorg.conf, in Section "Device" there's:

            Identifier "ATI radeon 7690M"

should be:

            Identifier "aticonfig-Device[0]-0"

sorry guys, i won't update repos today with minor amd changes, tomorrow it shall be done
