new hwdetect launched in initscripts-9, now the modprobe.conf entries are not necessary anymore.

I started using hwdetect a little while ago, no problems when I remember the permissions . I just loaded the latest · initscripts 0.7.1-10. After putting the correct line in rc.conf (thanks knoppix), I notice that everything runs faster, kde 3.5 firefox 1.5 etc.
THANKS!!!

Have hwdetect in both 2.6.14 and 2.6.13 kernels.
While operating the 2.6.13 kernel prior to install of hwdetect and initscripts -10, I was able to utilize USB audio via the USB system and the KDE mixer set to USB pcm format. I noted that the USB device began blinking its indicator led at one second or so intervals when the KDE elements were loaded during boot. The device in use is an SIIG optical/analog USB audio unit.
After loading the hwdetect and initscripts into 2.6.13, the KDE interface during boot does not energize the indicator light and USB audio is inoperative.
The same conditions are extant when using kernel 2.6.14 but it did not provide the USB audio even without the hwdetect and initscripts. The SIIG indicator led never blinks but remains lighted.
The USB mouse scrolls in kernel 2.6.13 but has never scrolled in kernel 2.6.14 with or without hwdetect and initscipts.

Do not know what changed things but after loading hwdetect, initscripts -10 and ....tune2fs -O dir_index /dev/hda3...and shutdown -F -r now... my system responds to MPlayer and KMplayer whereas before in this kernel I was unable to use either (Kernel 2.6.13)
I am going to test kernel 2.6.14 for the same problem existed there.

Downloaded mplayer and kmplayer into kernel 2.6.14 with hwdetect and initscripts-10 already installed and both mplayer and kmplayer performed correctly. It seems the hwdetect with initscripts solves the mplayer problem I experienced with both kernels.

lilsirecho: could it be that you are running kde from testing repo and that get updated?
new kdemultimedia is bugged with arts output and cna'T play mp3 or ogg files.
btw is your system now correct working, beside the audio problem?
thanks

Thanks for response and the comments. I suspect that the kde area may be the culprit however the downloads for kde were made some time ago.
The scroll wheel on the mouse doesn't work in kernel 2.6.14 still.
I am running normally for all the elements I have encountered except the mouse. It performs correctly in kernel 2.6.13.
Thanks for the upgrades . Might try the new gui for pacman being discussed..

2 tiny suggestions:
a) would it be possible to add an argument to hwdetect like... "--list-modules"... that would create a list with space separated module names, usable in... /etc/rc.conf for example (or even create directly a "MODULES=(...)" line).
b) would it be possible to change the params from "-long-param-name" to "--long-param-name", as the POSIX conventions say? (or.. at least that's what I know) I kept wondering why "hwdetec --show-modules" didn't work for me...

Downloaded pacman -Syu for initscripts -12 and some alsa upgrades.
I lost mplayer after the initscripts re-install in rcsysinit and reboot in kernel 2.6.13. The USB audio operates through the kde mixer but the kde mixer no longer has the pci audio option available.
In kernel 2.6.14, downloaded via pacman also and installed initscripts -12. and added the lines to rcsysinit.
After reboot, lost usb mouse and received arts sound message. Cannot run kernel 2.6.14 as a result.
Perhaps this info is of interest to your project.
Perhaps I can restore my 2.6.14?

this gets loaded if you have serial ports, you can safely blacklist them.

Additional remarks regarding -12 initscripts...
The hwdetect -show-modules command fails to display modules..Hwdetect -show-modules-order... also fails....kernel 2.6.13...
Unable to run kernel 2.6.14 due to loss of USB mouse and USB keyboard after install of initscripts -12.

Unable to enter hwdetect -show-modules-order in kernel 2.6.14 since I have no mouse nor keyboard(USB not functioning).
Rcconf modules list:
MODULES=(!usbserial !ide-scsi ne2k-pci snd-usb-audio cramfs fuse)
Tried using the CD 0.7.1 but does not load to system via the prompt entry.....arch root=/dev/hda3....
The CD boot then enters vmlinuz followed by initrd but does not load the system, ending up in arch install prompt.
Attempts to run hwdetect after chroot unsuccessful, requires /sys mount.
Is there a way to revert to initscripts -10?

my suggestion, try to not load anything in your modules array, let hwdetect do the job, perhaps you confuse it, all your modules are listed so it should work with hwdetect.
usbhid is needed for usb input devices that is also listed so it should work.
Else try to add usbhid to modules array then should work.
EDIT:
have you cleaned modprobe.conf from stupid alsa entries, new kernels can make trouble with old values in modprobe.conf

Removed all modules from rcconf in kernel 2.6.13 system which was operating but had no mplayer after -12 initscripts.
That system now acts the same as kernel 2.6.14 which has no USB support.
I address this post from Knoppix.
Question: what action is now to be taken to enable modules from the kernel, such as fuse and cramfs? These were removed per your advice.
I assume I require usbhid in rcconf modules to establish the USB firstly. Perhaps there might be more needed?
I assume that entry of corrections in this kernel (-13) will be useable in restoring (-14) system.
I appreciate your responses

Note your EDIT and report that modprobe.conf has no stupid entries as previous posts reported so no changes were initiated therein.
I will try USBHID in kernel 2.6.13 via chroot to rc.conf.
Report later....

Inserted .,..usb-hid into rc.conf modules with archCD chroot...verified in this boot of Knoppix.
The kernel 2.6.13 system with the above entry on rc.conf did not provide usb control with the keyboard and mouse after the KDE boot sequence completed. The arch linux log-in was completed with the keyboard, however and it occurs before the kde boot-up.
What further changes in rc.conf will be required?
