Screen flickering and system freezes when using Nouveau driver.

I'm testing the Nouveau driver on my computer, I really want to keep this driver installed because it makes XFCE to use less resources than the Nvidia proprietary driver. But when I start some apps like firefox or make changes to the desktop, the system stop responding and then the screen breaks.
I can't use the computer in that state so I force a shutdown.

I don't know how to see what is going wrong, because the proprietary driver don't give me these problems, I don't get any errors at dmesg log and Xorg log don't have any helpful information.

I have seen the same frozen system problem this morning; I use the 'nouveau' driver since yesterday.
It happened when I clicked on the firefox icon of wbar, and there is no error message in the logs; only the power button could force an unclean poweroff.
So you are not alone; I'm searching the web for infos about that. But that's not good sad

This is probably linked to 3D acceleration which is enabled by default and uses the nouveau-dri mesa driver.

So the nouveau-dri mesa driver is not stable yet; but how reliable it is in normal use, I don't know; and which applications may cause a full system crash, I don't know. Presently I only removed the wbar graphical launcher, and I will use only the openbox menu. I will see if there is no more hangs in my normal daily usage. I don't like very much this uncertainty of the nouveau dri stability, and with the broken access to virtual tty consoles introduced by the 304-84 nvidia driver, we are not very happy in these days using Nvidia gpus.

I found on the web the 'nouveau.noaccel=1' parameter which can be added to the Kernel command line to prevent the mesa dri driver to be used.
I didn't try it yet. But could someone using it tell me if videos in flash or mplayer work well with nouveau and no 3D acceleration?

I got again a total system freeze today when I wanted to launch firefox using only the openbox menu, without wbar running.
So I decided to try now the 'nouveau.noaccel=1' kernel command line parameter, and to use again wbar for my frequently used applis.

Since I disabled 3D acceleration with nouveau, my system is stable again.

I am just afraid now that I get a heating issue with streaming videos resulting in automatic poweroff by the acpi "stupid" feature (it already happened once!?).

I also could not use gvim anymore due to displayed text disappearance, but I switched to gedit as a replacement for graphical text editor with tab capability and syntax coloring.

So I will keep nouveau for now, instead of nvidia 304-84.

@AxGS: Can you tell what you decided since your opening post?
