[SOLVED] tty screens go blank after running startx

After nvidia and xorg updates over the past few days, I run into this problem:

Booting up is fine.  I see tty1, tty2, tty3, etc all as normal.
I log into root in tty1 as usual.  I can see the screen fine.
I log into my user in tty2 and manually startx there.  I can see this screen fine.
I ctrl-alt-F1 back into tty1 and it is a blank screen.  Same with all the rest (tty3, tty4, etc).
I know it isn't frozen because I can blindly type reboot and it works.  So non-X tty's are functioning, I just can't see them.  The tty2 I started x on is visible at all times, it never goes blank.

What I think are relevant upgrades from pacman:

I have been searching through forums for 3 days and best I could find was someone with the same problem but in the ATI 200+ page thread and not answered, and one pre-systemd.  The only error I could find as an obvious error was about apcid but I haven't been using that, so not sure how that could apply.

Re: [SOLVED] tty screens go blank after running startx

It is a known nvidia bug.
Share your experience here, maybe the devs will fix it sooner smile

Ahh. Nvidia.  I was tunnel-visioned on xorg.
I'll make an account at nvidia and post.
Thank you so much!

Re: [SOLVED] tty screens go blank after running startx

Solved for me today with the 304.88-1 update.
[2013-04-05 16:56] [PACMAN] upgraded nvidia-304xx (304.84-2 -> 304.88-1)

Re: [SOLVED] tty screens go blank after running startx

It's not clear to me why the 304.88 driver solves the broken access to virtual tty console.
From http://nvidia.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/3290 it corrects a vulnerability which 'has been present since NVIDIA driver version 195.22';
and concerns the "NoScanout" mode:

"NoScanout" mode is enabled implicitly on NVIDIA products which lack display output connectors, and can be enabled explicitly on some other configurations with the X configuration option:

Option "UseDisplayDevice" "none"

What is the link with the access to tty console after running the xorg server?
Maybe it works again just by chance like it worked before 304.84...
