Re: The Official Hello Everyone Thread

Hey Everyone,
I'm Tom,
I've been playing with Arch courtesy of the folks at Archlinuxarm, on a collection of hacked Pogoplugs that serve as fileservers with samba and cups, and that monitor IP cams with motion, and serve up video with pyTivo.  But since they lack the power to transcode, I finally decided to revive an old dead PC and set it up with Arch to do everything.  Its a pentium D powered system with 2GB of ram and 3.5 TB of hard drive space.  It runs pyTivo and the Plex media server, as well as samba and cups.    It can transcode just fine, so I can share video accross several platforms now.
Thanks to those that provide the install guides and the wiki, as well as those of you that keep the code fresh.  Its all gone pretty smoothly ( though I did get some practice breaking things with the plug computers)
Tom

Re: The Official Hello Everyone Thread

Hi. I am a programmer, and I need to do learn some programming on my home computer, but I don't want to mess it up, so I got a virtual box and I installed the VERY COMPLEX os known as Arch Linux. Most of you might know what it is. Anyways, I joined this fourm to maybe get some help with installing it after 2 unsuccessful installations. Please wish me luck.

Re: The Official Hello Everyone Thread

Sup, Pigpenguin here:
Basically I ran linux for a short spell 6 years ago and then stopped. I decided I wanted to get back into the linux world. So I decided to dive in and learn to swim... so I wiped my hard drive and installed arch. Been running it for about a week now and have loved every second of it.  Not much else to say I guess. So see you around the forums.
oh and good luck HomelessFooser

Re: The Official Hello Everyone Thread

Hello!

My name is Frank.

I have been using Linux for several years, starting with RH 7.3 after fighting with Debian Potato for a long while, then switching back to Debian with Woody and becoming addicted to apt. I jumped over to Ubuntu for a while because it happened to come out when I was trying to switch from KDE to GNOME, and warty was essentially exactly what I was trying to achieve. I kept switching back and forth between Fedora and Ubuntu for several years after that whenever each would release, and getting used to the latest and greatest software made going back to Debian impossible for me.

When these projects moved to default images larger than CD size, I began looking for other distros, and dabbled with Arch among others. I became very interested in systemd along that road though and so coming back to Arch was not possible until they switched to this. Now Arch is simply the best systemd-based system, others are simply too bloated, so I think I will be sticking around - which has given me permission to actually customize this thing, something I never really bothered to do on other distros because I knew I would reinstall soon.

I am also very pleased to be back with KDE, which for some reason I never use with pre-built distros, but always with DIY distros. This and pacman have really improved my computing experience, I have missed playing with my system! Linux has become fun again for me, and for that I am thankful.

Hello!

I'm Octavian or 'mainerror' and I'm a professional software developer.

I've been using Linux for over a decade, starting with SuSE Linux, then moving to Debian and then to Ubuntu. I'm still an active Ubuntu community member.

I decided to install Arch Linux based on a recommendation of some people I respect and immediately fell for it.

Re: The Official Hello Everyone Thread

Hello!

Had to clean my drive a couple times to work out all the kinks but I got my 100% clean install, twice,
until I break it anyway, but I can always fix that or reinstall and start over now that I know how.

Pleased to be here, I can already tell the community is filled with intelligent people who expect nothing less from their peers.

Re: The Official Hello Everyone Thread

Hello everyone ~

I'm pretty new with Arch Linux, I love the philosophy of the system, I just installed so I don't really know what to expect. But, from reading articles from the wikia, and comments from friends that use it, I think that I'll like it a lot. But I'm just a casual user, not a developer or anything, I just love to learn, and with learning I love having the "control" of my system, is it mine, I think it's fair I decide where it goes, not other people. And I found only 2 distros that offers me it, Gentoo(especially their mindset set of "choices", that I love soo much) and Arch. But I don't have the knowledge to install Gentoo yet, so I'm using my Arch experience as a learning experience for Linux overall, even Arch itself, so I can be considered a "noob" I think.

I already used: Ubuntu, Mint, Slack, Crunch!, and now Arch(and Windows as my second OS via Dualboot) as I study Gentoo when I have time.

I think that's all, now I need to read about that fix with the Xorg(I think that is a fix that a user made, I didn't read yet) and Catalyst to start to use my Arch ~

Thanks for take your time reading, have a nice day.

Re: The Official Hello Everyone Thread

Hello everyone,

I am a newbie linuxer and now  a newbie Arch Linuxer.  I have used (to the best of my newbie ability that is) Linux Mint, Debian, LMDE, Slitaz, Ubuntu, FreeBSD, PCBsd, OpenBSD, and Fedora, et cetera -- maybe I am what is called a distro hopper, the thing is though i have used all these distros to the best of my limited newbie ability, I have not let go of any of them (well, maybe Ubuntu... maybe), and maybe i have learned some bits and pieces from the experience.  And now i want to check out Arch Linux and here I am smile.

Thank you for your time.

Re: The Official Hello Everyone Thread

Hey everyone,

I'm Bryan. I started using Linux 13 years ago, using Mandrake and Red Hat for the most. I eventually moved back to Windows. I tried Mint a few months ago and was quite impressed at how far things have come along.

I installed arch a few weeks ago and greatly enjoy the customizability and the ability to build my system how I want it. Not to mention all I've learned from the wiki and these excellent forums. Hope to be able to do my part in contributing someday soon.

Cheers,

Zifnab

Re: The Official Hello Everyone Thread

Howdy ladies and gentlemen,

I'm fr0z3d (my username is some sort of derivation of my real name, Francisco), 15 years old. I Started with Slackware on my netbook about 2 years ago, but it was just a month before I discovered this awesome distro (And I must add that it was love at first sight lol). It became the main OS for my netbook by then, but I recently decided to install it on my desktop PC, thanks to the arrival of Steam for Linux. I hope to be useful to the community!

Cheers,

You could have contacted the forum admins regarding this to recover the ID first, I guess.

Re: The Official Hello Everyone Thread

Good afternoon Archers (could that be a thing?)

I've been attempting to learn arch for a couple months now and I have already been just as infuriated with permissions as I was using debian on my VM for the past year. I hope in all due time I'll learn much much more, and everything will start getting easier (however possible you think that to happen.)

After referencing several articles and forum posts on the site I decided that it was about time to make an account and start contributing about 10 minutes ago! I hope that I'll be slightly active on here for the next couple years.

Hello Arch users. It's a pleasure to meet you all.

ps. Windows is not that bad.

Welcome! You should write your "operating system history" before you forget it. Now, I'm trying to remember my operating system history for the past 10 years. It's difficult! tongue

You should start a new thread in the "Newbie Corner" and ask your question. "Permissions" doesn't sound like something that should be giving you that much trouble. smile

Re: The Official Hello Everyone Thread

Finally registered an account and maybe it's time to give back to the community, not only with possible help, but also with just plain socialising. I guess following The Arch Way can get you to a solitary (and lurking) position, so I never had an urge to make an account, because I could find all answers with a little bit of digging through forum archives and threads.

I enjoy all things minimalist, so finding my way to Arch was just a matter of time.

Thanks to all of you!

Re: The Official Hello Everyone Thread

Hi, I’ve been using Arch as my main system for about half a year and I love it.

It is also my first Linux and I don’t know if I could have find a better way or place to learn to use it.

So, thanks for arch and the wiki and see ya.
