Hello World!

I've been a Linux user for a couple of years now, and as of two days ago, I'm an Arch Linux user as well.

I kind of got tired of other Linux distros breaking so darn easily, especially given I'm plagued with an older AMD graphics card that I constantly have to fight with
(Ubuntu still gives me nightmares.... * shiver*).
So yeah, I'm giving Arch Linux a shot. So far I'm liking the whole "Linux, minus the stupid" philosophy.

Glad to be a part of it.

Hi everyone.
I have been using linux for five years as my default system and arch for four years. I have to say that i feel quiet comfortable with the arch way. Except when the linux kernel got upgraded to 3.3.7 and my remote control stopped working and i had to hold the kernel and all the modules i use until 3.5.2 arrived

Hai,

I switched to Arch because I like the BSD build system and I fancied a change from Ubuntu. There was also the fact that Ubuntu's development tools were off the Ark (along with the 2E15 assorted species of whatever features on Animal Planet). I'll confess that everything from the Ark onwards was slightly ironic, just in case anyone jumps at me with a Bible. You can't be too careful these days, what with the internets and the fail and things.

I've been running Arch for maybe four days now and everything's nice and worky and I like that.

Hello Arch world!

I’m totally new to Arch, though I have been using Ubuntu for many a year now.
However, the turn that distro is taking displeases me more and more every month; I had to switch to Xubuntu, and now I’m in search of something for after Shuttleworth’s-more-and-more-proprietary-distro.
So, I read and tried, and so far, Arch was the most convincing — enough to make me sign up here!
Hence, I’ve installed it onto an old computer, and started to ‘play’ with its CLI, to get used to the core system — I think I will end up with an apache/ftp/anything server, but am not sure yet. And concerning the GUI, it will come only when I decide to put it on my main computer, for I do not believe that it requires much change from a distro to another.

Hope to have a nice time discovering Arch and its community.

Hello everybody,

I have been using Linux for maybe... 1.5 or 2 years now. I am only now joining the forums, though. Arch Linux was the very first Linux distribution that I used. I painfully switched from being a life long Windows only user, directly to Arch thanks to Svenstar0, he "converted my faith",not sure how familiar anyone would be with him, but he convinced me to switch after I worked on one of his game engines, and guided me through the entire process of my noobiness, along with a bunch of "rtfw". I finally got used to the way Linux works(Arch, to be specific), and how the community works, and now I love it, I can have it no other way. I have tried other distros since then, and I simply can't stand them. I even had to install Ubuntu on my laptop, since I couldn't get arch to work correctly RTL8188CE, even with the kernel driver it was spotty, I hope that is fixed soon.(slipping in my problems), but I ended up basically removing everything so I had just a base system, as if starting with arch, but with a different package manager and update approach. I still dual boot with windows on my main so that I can continue gaming, but I only use Arch to actually do things now.

I thank arch for improving my life so much, it works amazing and the only time there is a problem, it is usually because I am still a huge noob and bonked everything up myself, or I went too long without updating and then had to reconfigure everything.

Hi, I'm new to arch, but not to Linux. I read about arch on lifehacker a long time ago, but only recently decided to try it on an old computer. It had ubuntu with the unity gui, but it ran slow and some software like flash didn't work. I know that I could be using some other lightweight distro that's easier to set up, but I am interested in learning more about the terminal, linux, etc...
I also learn languages like javascript, python, ruby, and php (though I use javascript the most for html5 apps) on Codecademy. I installed Arch successfully on the old (2002) computer, but I am having trouble installing the driver for the legacy nvidia card, though I'll post the question for that in the Newbie Corner.

I hope my experience with arch goes well, and I might try creating packages in the future (if I get good enough at code).

Hi guys.

After a few years of on and off ubuntu use I thought it's finally time to try something new for my laptop. With some help from /g/ I decided on Arch because it seems to be the best of all worlds. Not to hard (Gentoo), not too easy (ubuntu), Free as in freedom, but not against nonfree software, and best of all, a wiki I can understand.

I feel welcome already.

Hello everyone,

So here's my late introduction, I registered a couple of months ago and have been using only Arch since. Yes, I had the usual newbie problems, but thanks to this fabulous wiki, I have been able to resolve all of them so far. It has been a very educational experience and a rewarding one also. I have trialled a wide variety of of DE's, WM's and file systems and now find myself back at almost were I started out with openbox as a stand alone. The only difference from the original installation is that this now uses Btrfs. And yes, I have read the warnings re stability but in the month or so that I have used it I have not experienced any issues. Just loving the whole Arch philosophy and hope to become more involved with this great community as my Arching skills develop.

I've been using linux for almost 5 years now. I started off with Ubuntu, and started distro hopping a few months after that. I stumbled upon Arch about a year later and havent looked back since. Talk about a learning experience! The wiki has been absolutely invaluable. Thank you so much for the work you have put into it.

Hello everyone,

I have been a GNU/Linux user since around 1999, starting with Debian from what I remember. I have used a number of different distributions including but not limited to SuSE, Mandrake/Mandriva, Red-Hat/Fedora, Slackware, Gentoo, (U)buntu's and now more recently Arch Linux.

GNU/Linux is my primary Operating System. I hope that I can learn from other users on this forum and of course perhaps help others new to the system.

Hello! I have just installed arch on my laptop. Was using Fedora before but is now taking it one step further to bleeding edge! My project right now is to get Weston working but so far I have just got it to work in X and not directly from the console. Going to the Wayland thread now.

after few years using Debian/Crunchbang I've decided to give Arch a try. The first time I have installed it, few months ago, I did not manage to set up the system as I wanted it to be. Then I have tried Manjaro 0.8.4 and started to appreciate Arch. Now I writing this post from a brand new Arch install, this time, thanks to a proper reading of the amazing wiki, everything is in the right place. I think I'll enjoy this Linux experience...

I'm relatively new to Linux, but I've played around with Mint, Ubuntu, and Puppy. I decided to go with Arch to revitalize my slow netbook and learn a few things about computing. I like everything so far. I figure it's a nice hobby that justifies procrastinating my master's thesis!

I was first introduced to linux in 2004 with Knoppix. It totally blew my mind that a computer operating system could be free. I first started actually using linux with Ubuntu 8.04 and moved up through the releases until I got tired of fixed releases and I was really turned off by Unity. I then started testing other distros and settled on Debian Sid for the rolling release aspect and ease of use. Then I started looking into Arch. I like the philosophy and that its a rolling release, documentation is superb and that's why I switched to Arch.

I'm currently migrating 100% to Arch, as an Ubuntu refugee. As the Ubuntu design got more and more complex, I felt the need for some simplicity in my life. Arch seems like the perfect OS for me at this point in my life.

Its now official - I'm an Arch Linux noobie!!

I'm a semi-retired information technology consultant who is really beginning to enjoy all the free time I have now. I've been working in/around/with computer hardware and software since March 1968 - now 45 years .. and I still don't know anything!

I got frustrated with all the big distros - Ubuntu, Mint, RHEL, Oracle, Centos (there's a horror story that goes with this one) - I'll post in one of the general topic areas as soon as I figure out how to do it ..

I really like Arch. It was a bi*ch to initially install - took me 3 tries to finally get to a desktop manager - lol. I have 4 other older machines that I haven't wanted to recycle and was looking for a small footprint distro that would run well on these old beasties ... I tried Puppy and DSL but they had restrictions similar to the big ones - reinstalls 2 or 3 times a year to upgrade, old versions of app and utility software etc. I tried Manjaro but couldn't get pacman to upgrade after they reorganized their repos. I couldn't finish the installation - so I researched Arch and found a couple of great articles that walked through the initial install and setup and voila - it works, is really fast and is a rolling release. So far so good. Remember that I mentioned I had lots of free time? Not any more! I'm really enjoying myself working with Arch.

PS: The Arch web sites are probably the best available for any distro out there .. I've used them often for other linux troubleshooting and problem solving. They are truly awesome!

I have been using Arch for about a year now but it is only now that it became my main OS. I tried many Linux distribution, Ubuntu was my pick for some time but at some point I just didn't understand their UI anymore and I dropped it. I decide to go back to Arch as it was light, fast, relatively easy to install and I decide what to install.

This is my second day using arch Linux and I have to say this day was more successful then yesterday. I tried installing many times but it just wouldn't boot. Found out today that I was not doing anything wrong... It was a bug in the Dell Bios. So that makes me happy!

Hope to have some fun with my next goal: learning vim and some more python.

Hello Archers.
I am new here and thought I'd start with an introduction, as seems appropriate. I am pretty much a complete Linux noob. I've been running Ubuntu for a few weeks. Never tried any other distros. And now I'm planning on plunging into Arch, having read a bit about it over the past week.

Why Arch? I like the website. Very clean and simple. But mostly, I want to learn as much as I can, and Arch's DIY approach seems like a good way to go about this. I expect this to take me a long time, but fortunately, I am in no hurry. I will be installing Arch on a laptop which is not used for anything. I have several other computers in the house, so I do not need this project to be done by any particular time, and I will always have internet access on another computer so I can research problems as I go.

I thought it might be useful to keep a thread here updated on progress as I go. I am probably going to use a schedule of researching during the week and then working on it on the weekend, trying to break it up into manageable chunks. This may be more appropriate to put in some blog, but I'd rather have the interaction of the community to get feedback as I go, and hopefully it turns into a useful resource to other noobs down the road. Is this permitted and would it be seen as a constructive use of the forums?

Anyway, I'm glad to be here and hope to learn a lot and eventually be able to contribute here.

Welcome aboard. I started a lot like you, and now I'm more comfortable with arch than any other distro.

I don't think you'll get kicked out or anything for posting your updates, but rather than post here it's probably a better idea to start a new thread on it in the Newbie Corner. It might also be more instructive to just post things that you don't find in the wiki. But don't take it from me. I'm sure a moderator will let you know.

I think you'll find that, because of the amazing wiki, Arch is not as hard to get around with than some people think (or say).

I'm making the transition to Arch since ssd crashed LM13 a couple weeks ago, Son helped me set up dual boot Mint (restored from a good rsync backup) with Arch (which he swears by), then what-ya-know? Mint crashed but Arch is running, so he's helping me with transition (so far so good) and eventually get the old Mint /home moved under the Arch - started out with Ubuntu 3 yrs ago, switched to Mint Debian, then Mint ubuntu a little over a yr ago, but had been windows since dos622 and windows 3.11 days - i prefer linux but am somewhat lazier than linux requires having come from windows for 20yrs

Enlightened (As in introduced to Linux): Early 2009
Tested Water (Dual Boot with Windows as main OS and occasional dips to ubuntu) till mid 2009
Moved to Linux completely by end of 2009 using Linux Mint
The first time I convinced someone else to try Linux and then supported him with transition - mid 2010
Pure Linux house since Aug'2010
Flirted with Bodhi, Ubuntu and most other Debian derivatives all this while...now looking to call Arch my home.

My musings on linux are usually captured on my blog as much for benefit of others as for my own.

The reason I moved to Arch was mainly because I wanted an unadulterated Gnome experience and a clean system. Managed that successfully on 07/04/2013. There was a learning curve but everything was either available in wiki or on the forums so never really needed to post anything.

I hope I will contribute here as much as I will take.
