Force 802.11b mode for a wireless adapter

Hello, I would like to know how to force a wireless adapter to work on the 802.11b band only (this is, make it so it does not use g/n).

Thanks

Just use iwconfig to set the speed where you want it.

I may have to CONSOLE you about your usage of ridiculously easy graphical interfaces...
Look ma, no mouse.

I don't really think that is going to help. (It does not.)

That's probably because your wifi device driver module doesn't support enforcing 802.11b mode, like my b43:

# iwconfig wlan0 modu 11b
Error for wireless request "Set modulation" (8B2F):
SET failed on device wlan0 ; Operation not supported.

Does forcing a slower rate without changing mode help, in your casee?

# iwconfig wlan0 rate 11M

Re: Force 802.11b mode for a wireless adapter

If my dusty knowledge of 802.11 is still accurate, it should be enough to force the rate down to 11M or 5.5M. The hardware should then fall back to CCK, which is basically the "b".

In any way, it might be useful you told us your reasons to enforce this behaviour.
