Re: The AMD/ATI Bar & Grill

Hi,
last test for today.
Radeon module was loaded, so i've balcklisted it. Now X org fail but the systema and the consolle remain active.

the error is "[    17.823] (WW) fglrx(0): Kernel Module version does *not* match driver.
[    17.823] (EE) fglrx(0): incompatible kernel module detected - HW accelerated OpenGL will not work"
This is strange as i've installed only one kernel, so i tryed to recompile the module again with
"catalyst_build_module all"
(hook service is disabled now)
and still get the same error. Maybe an old module is found and used? full Xorg.0.log:

Re: The AMD/ATI Bar & Grill

Hi all, I use archlinux since 5 years with no problem on a Nvidia graphic card, but that laptop died and now I have a ATI graphic card on the new laptop. I am not able to make it work even with the open source driver. I posted in another thread, but maybe here is the best place to get some help.
https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=161917
Please ask me if other information is needed.
Thank you in advance!

Re: The AMD/ATI Bar & Grill

Would be glad if someone could help me out here: https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=161923

Tried the proprietary drivers for AMD from both Vi0L0's catalyst and catalyst-stable repositories. The desktop effects simply refuse to work. (19 of them don't work)
rm ~/.kde4/share/config/kwinrc didn't work for me. The open source drivers aren't an option for me as I need steam for gaming and don't want my gpu to overheat.
Its a known issue: https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=157732
Any solutions?
EDIT: My gpu is 6870 if that helps

This is on KDE 4.10.2. Thanks!

This is a known issue with KDE 4.10, and the only solution I'm aware of is deleting ~/.kde4/share/config/kwinrc and restarting plasma. For me, simply killing and restarting plasma works:

$ killall plasma-desktop
$ plasma-destop

The downside is that it doesn't survive a reboot so it has to be done every time you log into KDE.

I broke my arch installation after updating the kernel and trying to revert to the drivers from the offcial repos. I tried deleting ~/.kde4/share/config/kwinrc and logging out and logging back in but to no avail. Can you check if that works for you? Because if it does, then restarting plasma desktop may not work for me. Also any idea when this might be fixed? Just want to know if its worth the pain of re installing everything again.

Thanks!

I think you should not log out after deleting ~/.kde4/share/config/kwinrc. Try this from a konsole shell:

$ killall plasma-desktop
$ rm ~/.kde4/share/config/kwinrc
$ plasma-desktop

I'll have an another go at it then. Installing everything over again sucks because I have like 50 KB/s internet sad

I am trying to overclock my monitor from 60 Hz to 80 Hz.
I've achieved this with simple commands with the open source radeon driver:

xrandr --newmode "2560x1440_80.00"  425.00  2560 2760 3040 3520  1440 1443 1448 1510 -hsync +vsync
xrandr --addmode DVI-0 "2560x1440_80.00"
xrandr -r 80

but these do not work with the proprietary driver. It gives me this errormessage:

xrandr --addmode DFP3 "2560x1440_80.00"
    X Error of failed request: BadMatch (invalid parameter attributes)
      Major opcode of failed request: 141 (RANDR)
      Minor opcode of failed request: 18 (RRAddOutputMode)
      Serial number of failed request: 47
      Current serial number in output stream: 48

Specifying the modeline in the X server config and adding various lines like IgnoreEDID wont help aswell.
Any idea how to get 2560x1440@80Hz working with the catalyst driver? The open source one has no problems.
It lets me set lower refresh rates but that's obviously not what I want. So there's some lock which prevents me on setting higher refresh rates than the ones in the EDID.

Still stuck with this issue.
I also tried the EDID which ToastyX's custom resolution utility generated on windows and had no luck.
I saved it as a raw edid file and put it in /etc/ati/DFP3.edid
The Xorg log showed me that it loaded the file: fglrx(0): Successfully loaded EDID override file
But I still wasn't able to set the new refresh rate in the catalyst control or anywhere else. Only 60 Hz were selectable.
Here's the generated edid file, if it helps: http://www.woabou.eu/files/qnix.edid

I'm really considering the open source driver right now and patching out the pixelclock limit out of that.
Does it still have tearing at video playback (with compositing obv.)?

Re: The AMD/ATI Bar & Grill

Hello!

First off before saying anything I want to thank Vi0L0 for his awesome work with maintaining catalyst repos. I appreciate it extremely much!

Now on to my problem:

I discovered yesterday (probably after doing some kind of upgrade with the kernel or something) that when booting the X server seems to hang (it goes black with random darkblue boxes on the screen). SLiM doesn't show up and I can't switch to virtual consoles or anything. I'm using the catalyst package from hd234k (plus utils and lib32) and my video card is Mobility Radeon HD 3400 (unless I'm terribly mistaken, might be 3200). Since I couldn't do anything with the driver I have switched over to the OSS drivers in the mean time so now I can at least do school work. I can't really figure out what the problem is, but here is the full Xorg.0.log:

Re: The AMD/ATI Bar & Grill

@BitPuffin: why are you using xorg-server 1.11? I'm using catalyst-hook form repo [catalyst-hd234k] wit xorg-server 1.12.4-1 from [xorg112], and it works fine. Try upgrading xorg-server and see if the problem gets solved.

Re: The AMD/ATI Bar & Grill

Sorry for my English (i used Google translate).
My graphics card is HD 4650 Mobility. Driver catalyst-lagacy 13.1. Using xorg-1.12. In Gnome 3, process gnome-shell use very much CPU time by simply moving a window or page rendering in the browser (50 - 60%). When using the free drivers this does not occur. But I want to use proprietary driver, because they have better power management and support for hardware video decoding. Please, help solve the problem.

SanskritFritz: Sorry I was in a slight rush so I didn't have time to check what was preferred, it's fixed now!

snack: I didn't realize that would work, maybe I misread something back when I was looking through the wiki, or maybe it was that I didn't wanna risk it. I'll give it a go tomorrow. Why are you using hook instead of just the default catalyst package?

I'm using hook because I use linux-ck kernel package which is usually ahead of stock Arch kernel, against which catalyst is usually built. Using hook I get automatic module recompilation for all my kernels every time a kernel is updated; it is very useful IMHO, and Vi0l0 did a great job with it (BTW thanks again for your work, man smile )

Damn, why is Violo afk exactly this week?

Also Catalyst 13.4 is out (one day before the next Ubuntu release, who would have thought...).

With Compute shader support. We are close to opengl 4.3 (one year after its release). Youpi !!!!

Using hook I get automatic module recompilation for all my kernels every time a kernel is updated; it is very useful IMHO, and Vi0l0 did a great job with it (BTW thanks again for your work, man smile )

Ah I see, I'm not that hardcore that I use custom kernels yet smile Even though I've been using linux for quite some time! BFS seems interesting though. But I'll keep using the regular catalyst package until then.

I wasn't able to try out using a different Xorg server today since internet was down in school (and my tethering internet is too slow and limited for those kind of packages), so I'll hopefully try it out tomorrow!

Re: The AMD/ATI Bar & Grill

Hi guys, waiting for Violo, because i read he's away this week, i just edited the catalyst-total pkgbuild to give a try to latest 13.4 drivers...

I'm on a llano notebook (6620G + 6470) and with 13.4 i can switch again to iternal vga without any system freeze.

Can't say a lot about 3D performance because I haven't done any testing.

I hope that Violo will not be offended if I modified the PKGBUILD(x64).

Here's the pkgbuild text if you want to give it a try: (I recommend, however, even if this works, to wait for violo's release for any support)

I did roughly the same thing and did not notice any issue. I was able to play games with a usual framerate. The usual glitch of the beta version (i.e. no brightness setting) are not present. I was also able to run GL 4.3 code (compute shader and shader buffer storage mainly) without too much issue.

Re: The AMD/ATI Bar & Grill

I have also tried Catalyst 13.4 with PKGBUILD of MadNoob and succesfully installed the module without errors... However, I have a problem with catalyst. I have ad AMD Radeon HD 7500M and I have installed xvba video from Viol0's repository but hardware acceleration for videos doesn't work. When I hopen a video encoded with h264 for example, if I check "use hardware accelleration" in VLC my system freeze and I have to force reboot it. Can someone help me ? Thanks.
