[GNOME 3.8] GNOME Shell (in GDM or local session) hard-freezes machine

Greetings all!

I have tried several times to get GNOME 3.8 work properly on my Arch box; including when GNOME 3.8 was in the gnome-unstable repositories. Every time has resulted in hard-freezes when I run "systemctl start gdm"; or if it is enabled as a target. At first, I thought it might be a lingering configuration issue; and so I reinstalled all the GNOME packages; and then every system package. At last, just to make sure, I reinstalled Arch Linux. The issue remains. Occasionally I am able to get it running; but usually only after a fresh install (until I reboot); or after another DE has been running (such as Xfce) or a window manager (such as Metacity). Note that GNOME 3.6 works fine.

The logs don't really illuminate anything (at least they didn't). I will reply to this post with the logs (as I will have to trigger the fault again).

My system configuration is based around an Intel 2500K (HD 3000) i5 processor. I haven't found this bug reported anywhere... but does anyone else experience this? Or have any idea what might be going on?

Re: [GNOME 3.8] GNOME Shell (in GDM or local session) hard-freezes machine

The only logs after the hard freeze is the :0.log file; which contains the X.org startup; and doesn't look very interesting. Just in case someone sees something I don't though, here it is:

Re: [GNOME 3.8] GNOME Shell (in GDM or local session) hard-freezes machine

I have the same problem. For me it also hard-freezes the machine if I disable gdm and then startx from the tty with the .xinitrc file set to launch gnome-session

Re: [GNOME 3.8] GNOME Shell (in GDM or local session) hard-freezes machine

I have been seeing similar behavior on my FrankenPad which is a mix of a T60p and a T61p (with Nvidia graphics and the open source drivers).  I'm not sure how to debug it. . .

Same here problem, but it will work with slim and .xinitrc exec gnome-session.

Re: [GNOME 3.8] GNOME Shell (in GDM or local session) hard-freezes machine

I have a "workaround":
Hitting Ctrl-Alt-F2 like a freak before system freezes. Then log in, startx with a default .xinitrx and switch back to your first VT. Somehow I was able to login with GDM and now I'm afraid to reboot tongue

Same here. With slim all goes fine.

edit:
While I'm currently forced to use Slim I made a minimal Arch Linux theme for it:

(the original design idea comes from http://crunchbang.org/forums/viewtopic.php?id=20750)

download it here:

This may be driver related. If you use the intel drivers, try disabling rc6.

Re: [GNOME 3.8] GNOME Shell (in GDM or local session) hard-freezes machine

using slim instead of gdm works for me to, so it must be some bug in gdm 3.8

Yeah... that looks right. Glad to see it is an upstream bug. It should receive lots of attention.

Thanks guys smile.

Re: [GNOME 3.8] GNOME Shell (in GDM or local session) hard-freezes machine

Same problem, I had to install gdm-git because gdm didn't work. (gnome worked only once berfore re-enabling gdm and rebooting)
Now after gdm login to gnome everything freezes (I can't switch to ttyx).

I've disabled my old grub params about i915 rc6, but if that is the problem, it is still enabled by default.
Before gnome3.8 I used the commented params.

title ArchLinux
root (hd0,0)
kernel /boot/vmlinuz-linux root=/dev/sda1 ro quiet init=/usr/lib/systemd/systemd i915.modeset=1
initrd /boot/initramfs-linux.img
#i915.i915_enable_rc6=7 i915.i915_enable_fbc=1 i915.i915_enable_fbc=1 i915.lvds_downclock=1 i915.semaphores=1

you can disable rc6  i915.i915_enable_rc6=0 - after this gdm works well.

Thank you, tobsen and yangtsesu!
After logging in with the workaround from #7, I was able to apply the first method from #17: switching to SNA acceleration as described in https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/In … ion_method. This solved the problem on my Dell XPS L502X machine.

Switching to SNA on Intel worked for me too. Dell Inspiron 15R.

Re: [GNOME 3.8] GNOME Shell (in GDM or local session) hard-freezes machine

Same here, wx520. I discovered the following:

If I run "startx", and then "optirun glxspheres", and then I quit x and run "systemctl start gdm", gdm starts without crashing and seems to be ok.  So the graphics card seems to be improperly inialized somehow when starting it from gdm.

This is with "pacman -S intel-dri xf86-video-intel bumblebee nvidia". I also tried uninstalling bumblebee, but gdm crashes then too.

Thank you all!

I also have an Dell XPS L502X and did what marcvangend, tobsen and yangtsesu told and now my Arch 3.8.8-2-ARCH + gnome 3.8.1-1 + gdm 3.8.1.1-1 + bumblebee 3.2-1 + nvidia 313.30-4 are working fine.

I had gnome 3.6 working on my machine and did an system upgrade using pacman -Syu this week. I didn't have to reinstall all gnome DE.

In summary:
1-First I hit Ctrl-Alt-F2 like a freak before system freezes.
2-In console I run the command systemctl disable gdm, and systemctl enable gdm
3-In console I run the command systemctl start gdm
4-Created /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/20-intel.conf using SNA acceleration as said in  https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/In … ion_method
5-Created /etc/modprobe.d/i915.conf as said in https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/In … ng_Options, the final content of file was:
options i915 i915_enable_rc6=0 i915_enable_fbc=1 lvds_downclock=1 semaphores=1
6-Deleted folder /var/log/gdm
6-Reboot
