Re: Gnome 3.8 not working (upgrade from 3.6)

I'm having problems too. I can't even login to gnome 3.8, it just shows the background of lightdm and sits there and after a while you if press a key it'll take you back to login. Worst part is, this update broke Cinnamon too. It logs in fine but once you hit the menu button or press alt f2 it hangs.

Re: Gnome 3.8 not working (upgrade from 3.6)

Tried the following:

- Removed all the configurations files/folders gdm and gnome related (~/.gnome ~/.local ~/.config /var/lib/gdm*)
- Reinstalled all the packages in the system "yaourt -S $(pacman -Qeq) --noconfirm"
- Used the rc6=0 fix
- Enable sna

Nothing has worked so far... Still the sad face oh no... something gone wrong. I hate it.

Any help is kindly appreciated.

Same issue here... Are you using intel drivers?

Yes, and I just solved it ! I simply replaced GDM (# systemctl disable gdm) with Slim (# systemctl enable slim).

Slim starts fine and I'm able to loggin. Gnome 3.8 works.

I'll just wait for a few days for this to be solved before going back to GDM.

This works for me too! I want to note that the .xinitrc have to include the following line: "exec gnome-session"

I'm sure you don't want to hear this, but you may find that GDM is now a hard dependency of GNOME 3. I can't find the authoritative reference, but I'm pretty sure I saw words to that effect on desktop-devel-list.

Re: Gnome 3.8 not working (upgrade from 3.6)

I am using lightdm in fedora rawhide with gnome 3.8  and lxdm in with gnome 3.8. You need to have gdm installed, but not necessary to use though.

Both of my installations are working good.

Still no luck after removing every configuration with rm -rf .gnome .gnome2 .gconf .gconfd .metacity .cache .dbus .dmrc .mission-control .thumbnails ~/.config/dconf/user ~.compiz* as suggested in http://askubuntu.com/questions/56313/ho … e-defaults.

Any idea?

Thanks in advance

Re: Gnome 3.8 not working (upgrade from 3.6)

@jiewmeng

I downgraded using the following:

I opened up the file /var/log/pacman.log to see what all applications were updated on my last update and what the version that it started as was.
Then, I opened a terminal and 'cd'-ed to /var/cache/pacman/pkg/  . At this point, I used "# pacman -U PACKAGENAME-NUMBER.tar.gz" for every package to downgrade the individual packages. I also had to uninstall the new packages and reinstall the deleted ones. After that, everything worked absolutely perfectly.

Re: Gnome 3.8 not working (upgrade from 3.6)

I have a Lenovo Y570 (Intel Sandy Bridge, Nvidia GT 555M) and did also experience a complete freeze during gdm load. Kernel messages indicate a GPU hang up. I could resolve this issue by activating SNA. If I deactivate it, my machine freezes again. So, this might be another option to circumvent this problem...

Acutally I had the opposite experience with Lenovo Y580 ivybridge. I couldn't use SNA at all whereas UXA is fine.

did that too. It was more than 200 packages and took me more than 2 hours.

I think if pacman has an option for rollback especially at least just for last update, it will be really good. I had same issue due to upgrade of gnome 3 from gnome 2 two years ago.

Re: Gnome 3.8 not working (upgrade from 3.6)

Uhmm ... is not that, by chance, the many casinos also reported on the forum are from users who like me have the mode of "fallback" set by default? In this case, you should manually control some configuration files to restore gnome-shell.
I'm not biased (only slightly pessimistic), take a look at gnome 3.8 would give!
to rehabilitate the terminal from the start with gnome-shell I gave:

 gsettings set org.gnome.desktop.session session-name gnome

and I enabled gdm (first threw startx manually):

 systemctl enable gdm

But I get too graphic environment startup a seraphic "somethinh was wrong" or anything and everything freezes. I have to restart the virtual consoles. For now use Mate, not great but better than nothing ... : D

gnome 3.8; another dirty trick? ...

Re: Gnome 3.8 not working (upgrade from 3.6)

Hi everyone, I have suspicions that it's whatever you're running on top of Gnome shell. nicolasantini is asking the right question!

I was using Cinnamon before the upgrade. After the upgrade the system would crash during systemd init, which I presume was caused by gdm. However it seemed like a lottery and once in a while it would let me in. I installed gnome-shell-extensions and logged in with the new Gnome Classic (not to be confused with Fallback) which is working.

Re: Gnome 3.8 not working (upgrade from 3.6)

Time for an unrelated question:

Does anyone know how to configure a way to make a "backup" of all current packages and versions? If this is possible, that way users can have a current working "backup" of Pacman so that when they upgrade to 3.8 to see if it works, they can have a way to recover without spending 2-4 hours downgrading everything by hand (I'm a bit upset that I was up until 5:30 AM fixing this on finals week, but that's just me tongue ). I'm very anxious about trying to upgrade to 3.8 because I don't want to downgrade again.

By the way, I'm running XFCE and have this problem as well. I'm not sure if it's a GNOME DE problem or a GNOME dependency problem, or both.

something from here?

by the way, I installed GNOME3 3.6 ~5 days ago and manually upgrading the system caused no problems. of course none of the extensions worked, the cursor wasnt visible sometimes and some other stuff, non releated to gdm, which I managed to fix.

Re: Gnome 3.8 not working (upgrade from 3.6)

Similar experience here too. After 3.8 install, starting X hung machine totally [I don't use a DM]. Here is how I got 3,8 to work:

1. Modified xinitrc to run twm instead of a Gnome session. X and twm work fine.
2. Restore xinitrc, id est un-comment exec gnome-session.
3. Move all non-critical "desktop" files from ~/.config/autostart. For me this included chromium, guake, orca-autostart, and rygel.

Gnome 3,8 now runs. HOWEVER ... For kicks, restored "desktop" files one at a time. Gnome 3.8 still runs. Did I find the problem? Clearly not. Wish I had tried starting Gnome after step two. Did runing X with twm alter some trans-session state variable? Or did starting the Gnome session without the auto-starts allow it to get past some differnt blocking state? Or was it the cold boot after that last hang? Can't find any evidence, might as well blame it on the sun.

Re: Gnome 3.8 not working (upgrade from 3.6)

Hey there,

I´m stuck the whole evening on the problem that my system isn't able to boot till Gnome respectively GDM.

I stopped gdm before updating via "pacman -Syu" and restarted the laptop right after because a kernel update was also in the loot box for me.
With gdm enabled and all extensions killed ( rm -rf ~/.local/share/gnome-shell/extensions) I tried my very best.

Currently the device is booting to GDM - last msg is "Started GNOME Display Manager Status OK", Starting Manage, Install and Generate Color Profiles, Starting Authorization Manager and Starting Accounts Service.
Then I get a short black screen and right after i can use a mouse pointer on shell (same startup screen as before).

I got no chance with using Slim.

Any idea?

If you need backup information tell me - I already reinstalled gnome and gnome extra and removed all Desktop and Startup Applications I do normally start my gnome-session with.

Greetings
Thomas

PS: xinit gnome-session works properly with standard user.

I think the best option is waiting at least one month to become ripe. Everyday checking update is not good option especially when major changes happened.

it worked for my Laptop (Thinkpad x220) after I turned on the SNA (previously I used UXA).

Cinnamon update today fixed cinnamon. I'm content, I rarely used gnome anyways (almost never). The only prob I have now is I cant change the default wallpaper (the annoying bright blue one that comes with gnome shell).

Re: Gnome 3.8 not working (upgrade from 3.6)

I had no problem with this upgrade, but my system has xorg113 instead xorg114 in function of catalyst support. The mouse cursor disappear but I changed the theme of cursor with gnome-tweak-tool and it works fine again.

Edit: In my notebook with radeon HD3200 i use oss driver + xorg 1.14 and i had no problem too. Just conky don't work with nautilus  and gnome-shell drawing the desktop.

Re: Gnome 3.8 not working (upgrade from 3.6)

Just to chime in, I also had issues with gdm and my gnome+Xmonad session. I could get gdm to log me into a plain gnome session but had major problems with Xmonad run from within gnome. Problem was I did 2 updates over the weekend and the machine was on and fine the whole time. Took it to work Monday and had no way to really tell which update did it and no time to dig into it. My quick solution to get back to work was installing SLiM and starting xmonad from my .xinitrc. Not what I want but it gets me to a desktop for now.
