[SOLVED] no 5.1 sound in Xfce4

Hello all,

did a fresh install of arch last weekend, installed cinnamon and gnome 3.10.  I had sound working fine.  Since cinnamon would lock up on me (tried the update, didn't work), and didn't care of the new gnome classic, I uninstalled gnome and cinnamon and installed Xfce4.  Everything went smoothly, except after Xfce install, I have no sound, where it worked 1 hour prior with gnome and cinnamon.

I've read through the wiki's, and forums posts and tried their suggestions, however, nothing seems to work.

the output of speaker-test -c 6 appears to work, but I don't get sound.

Here is some output that will help determine what's going on, though I'm not sure what to look for and could use some help.

I'm new to Xfce, so not to sure what to look for, any and all help is appreciated.

Any and all help/guidance is appreciated.

*EDIT*
Changed subject to reflect 5.1 sound is not working.  with speaker-test -c 6, I have sound out of all the speakers at once only when speaker-test cycles to front left and front right.  no sound at all when cycling center, rear left or rear right.

Re: [SOLVED] no 5.1 sound in Xfce4

What exactly you mean by no sound? In xfce4 I can't enable sound events, whatever I do, see: https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=157072 . I have google it a lot but I have no solution. However apps play sound fine. What happens when you run alsamixer (and unmute channels if they are muted). Is it a permission problem? (Test it by running your app as root).

Re: [SOLVED] no 5.1 sound in Xfce4

no sound in videos, speaker-test -c 6 runs through it's cycle, no errors, but no static.

However, I uninstalled pulseaudio and resinstalled and now when I run:

speaker-test -c 6

when speaker test cycles through my 5.1, on front left and front right, I get static out of all speakers, and on rear right, rear left, and center I don't have sound.    Ive had this before, and even posted about it https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=130964
I checked to see if I had volti installed and I do not.

Not sure what to check now so I get sound out of the 5.1 properly.  any ideas?

*EDIT*
spoke too soon.  I rebooted, and now I get this:

speaker-test -c 6

speaker-test 1.0.27

Playback device is default
Stream parameters are 48000Hz, S16_LE, 6 channels
Using 16 octaves of pink noise
ALSA lib pcm_dmix.c:1022:(snd_pcm_dmix_open) unable to open slave
Playback open error: -2,No such file or directory

Ok, just got sound back, but it's back to this:

speaker-test -c 6
when speaker test cycles through my 5.1, on front left and front right, I get static out of all speakers, and on rear right, rear left, and center I don't have sound.   Ive had this before, and even posted about it https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=130964

Re: [SOLVED] no 5.1 sound in Xfce4

See if anything has already opened the soundcard in stereo mode, preventing it from being opened for more speakers:

fuser -fv /dev/snd/* /dev/dsp*

If you want to stick with ALSA, rather than pulseaudio, then I recommend checking out the config in my sig.

Re: [SOLVED] no 5.1 sound in Xfce4

@brebs,

Thanx for your help, here is the output:

$ fuser -fv /dev/snd/* /dev/dsp*
Specified filename /dev/dsp* does not exist.
                                    USER        PID ACCESS COMMAND
/dev/snd/controlC0:        nixit           426 F.... pulseaudio
                                    nixit           480 F.... panel-18-mixer
/dev/snd/controlC1:        nixit           426 F.... pulseaudio
                                    nixit           480 F.... panel-18-mixer
/dev/snd/controlC2:        nixit           426 F.... pulseaudio
                                    nixit           480 F.... panel-18-mixer
/dev/snd/controlC3:        nixit           426 F.... pulseaudio

Not sure what I am looking for.

I'm not dead set on using ALSA over pulseaudio, my end goal is to have my 5.1 to work, so whichever technology works, I'm down, just need a bit of help getting it to work.

Re: [SOLVED] no 5.1 sound in Xfce4

I recommend getting rid of xfce4-mixer - it can only cause trouble, keeping audio open all the time. Especially confusing newbies who wonder why their changes aren't taking effect.

To alter the volume, I use xbindkeys.

Well, ALSA-only or Pulseaudio, *you* have to choose wink

Re: [SOLVED] no 5.1 sound in Xfce4

Well, I"ve only used gnome in the past and alsa and my sound card (SB Audigy 2 series) has always worked with 5.1.

Whatever the preferred solution (ALSA only or pulseaudio only), I'm down to switch to it.  I assume with Xfce, pulseaudio is the way to go?

Re: [SOLVED] no 5.1 sound in Xfce4

uggg, did my daily reboot, and now I get this:

$ speaker-test -c 6

speaker-test 1.0.27

Playback device is default
Stream parameters are 48000Hz, S16_LE, 6 channels
Using 16 octaves of pink noise
ALSA lib pcm_dmix.c:1022:(snd_pcm_dmix_open) unable to open slave
Playback open error: -2,No such file or directory

I have something seriously mucked up with my sound in Xfce, where it worked fine in gnome and cinnamon.  oy vey, off to troubleshoot.

Just took a look at your config, yeah, uh, I have no idea what I'm looking at, I don't understand it.  guess I better start reading up on it.

Re: [SOLVED] no 5.1 sound in Xfce4

Ok, I finally had some time to look into this.  Here is what I did:

-removed my SB Audigy card and using onboard only
-booted to windows to make sure 5.1 works.  *check
-booted to arch 64 w/Xfce4  -- no 5.1 sound

As a test, I booted to a linux mint 14 Xfce live media and installed, only took 5 minutes so no biggie.  Had 5.1 sound.  and "speaker-test -c 6" worked perfectly
As a second test, I booted to the recently released Xubuntu Xfce4, and installed, again, only took a few minutes.  Had 5.1 sound, and "speaker-test -c 6" worked perfectly

I then copied "/etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf" from xubuntu to a data drive

Last night I downloaded the latest Arch 64 ISO and installed following the wiki.  Once it was time to test sound I ran "speaker-test -c 6" and I can see it cycle through the speakers but only got sound out of all the speakers when speaker-test would cycle to Front Left and Front Right, nothing when it hit Center, Rear Right, Rear Left of subwoofer.

I then installed Xfce4 following the wiki, I can hear a slight static pop from the speakers, I then repeated the speaker test, same thing.  sound out of all the channels when speaker-test would cycle to Front Left and Front Right only.

I'm stumped.  This worked prior to when I moved from Cinnamon to Xfce.

I'm followed the wiki with setting sound cards, and nothing.  I even tried the file /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf, which I copied from my Xubuntu install (above) and rebooted, same thing.

I don't know what to try to get my sound working under Arch and Xfce now.  Any help is appreciated.

Re: [SOLVED] no 5.1 sound in Xfce4

Might help to pinch the configuration from e.g. Mint:

alsactl -f /tmp/asound.state store

Then try using it in Arch, by copying it to /var/lib/alsa/

Re: [SOLVED] no 5.1 sound in Xfce4

I thought the alsa-base.conf from my xubuntu install would work, I guess grabbing that from mint wouldn't hurt.  going to go try it from the live media to see if that works.

There's lots of ALSA changes in kernel 3.9, and also in alsa-lib 1.0.27 sad

I suspect that speaker-test is somehow buggy, because this only gives sound from the front-left and front-right speakers:

speaker-test -c6 -t wav -Dsurround51

Whereas mplayer outputs correctly to all 5.1 speakers (here's surround-test.ac3):

mplayer surround-test.ac3

booted up the live media of mint 14, and speaker-test gave me the individual 5.1 sounds. copied the file over to arch, rebooted and nada.

I went into pavucontrol and unlocked the volume sliders, and only had sound come out of the front speakers whenever I increased front right or front left.

For some reason, I can't get 5.1 to work.  sad

and it did work in Arch and does work in other distros.

Re: [SOLVED] no 5.1 sound in Xfce4

going back through the wiki, re-installing pulse.  Come to find out that pulse-alsa was not installed, installed that, and BAM, speaker-test -c 6 gives me indendent sound.

marked as solved.
