Configuring vino - what am I doing wrong?

So, I was told that launching vino-preferences was all I had to do. Well, it seems to be running:

$ ps -e | grep vino-server
 2430 ?        00:00:00 vino-server
$ netstat -nl | grep 5900
tcp        0      0 0.0.0.0:5900            0.0.0.0:*               LISTEN
tcp6       0      0 :::5900                 :::*                    LISTEN

I used vinagre to see my own desktop - I know, stupid test but anyway it worked.

But on the Slackware box I have tightvnc installed and tried to access my Arch box:

$ vncviewer <arch machine name | ip>::5900
Connected to RFB server, using protocol version 3.7
Server did not offer supported security type

What now?

Third Digital Deduction: Things go wrong even when there's absolutely no possibility of anything go wrong.

Re: Configuring vino - what am I doing wrong?

This is probably too late, but I've had the same problem and the fix in my case was:

$ gsettings set org.gnome.Vino require-encryption false

Notes:

  • this changes the (Gnome) settings for the current user only

  • it looks like vino-preferences is no longer part of the vino package

  • some of the Vino preferences are available if you run gnome-control-centre - but not the require-encryption setting

  • I am using Cinnamon as my desktop

Thank you for a reply, better later than never! Unfortunately my Slack box 'died' so I cannot test it, altough I did add your tip to the Vino article on the Arch Wiki

Re: Configuring vino - what am I doing wrong?

I just logged on again to update the wiki (I was a bit busy when I last logged on), but now I don't need to. Thank you Imello. Cheers, Geoff.
