Catalyst legacy a.k.a. hd234k doesn't work with xorg-server >1.12, while standard catalyst does. Don't be confused by versione numbers: same version numbers for standard and legacy drivers don't mean same features, especially xorg-server support.
Well then shouldn't the wiki be updated to say that catalyst <13.1 doesn't work with xorg 1.12 instead of catalyst 12.1?
I see the relevant section under "Installing the driver" in the wiki: effectively, it says that legacy driver is not compatible with xorg-server 1.14, and has instructions to roll back to 1.13. AFAIK, this is true for regular catalyst, not for legacy, and in fact my catalyst-utils from hd234k repo depends on xorg-server<1.13. The wiki probably needs an update...

catalyst-dkms 13.1-2
catalyst-hook 13.4-1
catalyst-utils 13.1-5
lib32-catalyst-utils 13.1-2Never used catalyst-dkms but I think that it conflicts with catalyst-hook (AFAIK both provide fglx module). Remove catalyst-dkms and reinstall catalyst-hook. BTW there's some missing conflict in some PKGBUILD...
Thanks, removed dkms and reinstalled hook. Still get the : lib32-catalyst-utils: requires catalyst-utils=13.1 fail when trying to install catalyst-utils 13.4.1 update. I'll leave dkms off if I don't need it, thanks.
for the lib32-catalyst-utils 13.4-1 update i get this fail. Strangely i've never had any problems in the past with the Ati drivers
looking for inter-conflicts...

woznme, I think you screwed your system a bit by mixing dkms packages from official repos with those from Vi0l0's repos. Try to remove with pacman all catalyst packages in your system (dkms, hook, utils, lib32), then be sure you placed the catalyst and xorg repos above any other repo in /etc/pacman.conf. Then install catalyst-hook, catalyst-utils and lib32-catalyst-utils, eventually removing any already present file that pacman complains about.

Yes, VTs seem to be still an issue...
With 13.4 I've got the problem switching to VT with this in Xorg.0.log:
(EE) fglrx(0): Failed to get ConsoleMode
So I tried to use uvesafb according to this https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Framebuffer and now I have working VTs despite the error in Xorg.log is still there.

So atm with Catalyst 13.4 + Xorg 1.13 my A8 system seems to work fine: no more kernel panic at shutdown/reboot, no mode problems with virtual terminals switching.
I still have the brightness bug with latest catalyst ( laptop backlight only changes after trying many times and it only changes between some random levels )
but its manageable

I have updated the wiki, please see the this change and this one. Is it oke now?

Just wandering: is it Ok that aticonfig wants me to restart Xserver after I toggle between Discreet and Integral GPU?
$ sudo aticonfig --px-dgpu
No protocol specified
PowerXpress: Discrete GPU is selected (High-Performance mode), please restart Xserver(s) for changes to take effect!
.. I thought it should be possible to switch between them depending on whether the book is on Battery or on DC.

Segmentation fault with catalyst-hook-13.4-1-x86_64.
I downgraded to catalyst-hook-13.3-10-x86_64, which works fine for me.
Kernel is 3.8.10-1-ARCH. Any idea?

I have updated the wiki, please see the this change and this one. Is it oke now?
Thanks Unia, I think now it's correct (and it will be for looong time, until AMD will introduce support for newer xorg-servers )

Is there a way to install the old amd app sdk (the appstream or amdapp-sdk package). I am coming from another distro and need version 2.4 or 2.5 for bitcoin mining
Offline
woznme, I think you screwed your system a bit by mixing dkms packages from official repos with those from Vi0l0's repos.
Thanks snack, Thats pretty much the solution i came up with before i hit the sack last night. Removed them all then reinstalled fresh from the catalyst repo. Would of done it sooner but i've always preferred to try to fix things with a small push rather then ramming it with a truck. thanks for your help!

You're welcome. BTW, I think that when there are problems related to package management the neat way to deal with them is through the package manager itself, if it is possible. Manual intervention in these cases must be reduced to a minimum, so "ramming everything with the pacman truck" is the way to go IMHO, rather than trying some subtle and error-prone manual intervention

I disabled varibright. The problem is that brightness changes that i do manually don't take effect and it is always quite bright when i start.
Anon11 wrote:I still have the brightness bug with latest catalyst ( laptop backlight only changes after trying many times and it only changes between some random levels )
Have the same issue on the my system (catalyst/catalyst-hook + catalyst/catalyst-utils-pxp + catalyst/lib32-catalyst-utils-pxp).
but its manageable
Plz tell me how
On my laptop (HP dv6z) , i can sort of use function keys that change brightness.
At first they do nothing but if i keep doing increase/decrease randomly i eventually get to a lower brightness ( after abt 5-10 seconds of continuous inc/dec )
Weirdly, this does not seem to work if i use kde brightness widget.

tray with acpi_backlight=vendor in grub... it should work "randomly" with fn keys

After recent updates to catalyst-hook, aticonfig --initial has detected my card again, (Previous versions said unsupported hardware and gave me a watermark). It's a Mobility radeon 5470, so should be supported by the driver, but using the xorg.conf file from aticonfig --initial X fails to start. With the generic xorg.conf I had been using, X starts, but performance is terrible, showing, for example 124FPS on a game, but actually running at 2FPS, the unsupported hardware watermark is gone, but the performance makes the desktop nearly unusable.
This machine has been through many graphics config changes, so it may be a better idea to clean install the graphics, can I do this without reinstalling the rest of the system? What needs to be removed or run to purge all the configuration files relating to xorg or graphics drivers?
Attached links are to my xorg.conf files.
xorg.conf from aticonfig --initial
Current (fallback) xorg.conf

@pYrO1v1aniac:
yes, it looks like you are not alone with the low framerate on 13.4, lately I've seen similar comments on other forums...
Never used catalyst-dkms but I think that it conflicts with catalyst-hook (AFAIK both provide fglx module). Remove catalyst-dkms and reinstall catalyst-hook. BTW there's some missing conflict in some PKGBUILD...
yes, soon (maybe tomorrow) I will update packages with this missing conflict.
BTW: ImNtReal has add catalyst-dkms into AUR.
Side note: after my e-mail catalyst-utils & lib32-catalyst-utils were removed from AUR's blacklist and so I was able to put it there again.

Just a quick notice --- xorg-server 1.13.4 is out, so it would be good if Vi0L0 updates his [xorg113] repo. It adresses some security issues, notably. I'm sorry if this was already noted. Thanks, updated. Previous version of the repo is named as [xorg113-original], url is the same.
hnws wrote:<3>[fglrx:firegl_apl_loadDatabase] *ERROR* APL: apl initialize fail.
Same here. Firstly I thought that it's caused by my xorg-server 1.13.4, but no.
Wondering what's that?.. hmm... At least it doesn't seem to cause any damage.
Would like to note that I'm also getting
[104334.198848] <3>[fglrx:firegl_apl_loadDatabase] *ERROR* APL: apl initialize fail.
[104334.316465] <3>[fglrx:firegl_apl_loadDatabase] *ERROR* APL: apl initialize fail.
entries repeatedly. I don't have any real problems other than an existing bug where my X session crashes upon resizing a window (specifically: konsole, wine app).

Yeah, same with me. Btw, I'm using a HD 7950. Which card do you have?

Im getting a bunch of these as awell
[fglrx:firegl_apl_loadDatabase] *ERROR* APL: apl initialize fail.
[fglrx:firegl_apl_loadDatabase] *ERROR* APL: apl initialize fail.
seems to mess with virtualbox, which stopped working all together.

Ok, so I've updated AUR and main repos: [catalyst] [catalyst-stable] [catalyst-hd234k] with:
- catalyst-dkms conflict;
- catalyst-generator which has gained new feature:
thanks to Mikkel Oscar Lyderik catalyst_build_module script now has got autocompletion on bash and zsh
Autocompletion is showing kernels listed in /usr/lib/modules and others options like all, remove, etc.

Are you the [testing] user? I've seen a note on ML that there's (was maybe?) a problem with linux 3.9 and virtualbox.
Here virtualbox is working well (also on custom 3.9 kernel).
BTW: ever considered switching to kvm?
OT: maybe nVidia is making better blobs, but just look at their way!

Plz tell me how
On my laptop (HP dv6z) , i can sort of use function keys that change brightness.
At first they do nothing but if i keep doing increase/decrease randomly i eventually get to a lower brightness ( after abt 5-10 seconds of continuous inc/dec )Weirdly, this does not seem to work if i use kde brightness widget.
tray with acpi_backlight=vendor in grub... it should work "randomly" with fn keys
Does not work on my laptop. Function keys for brightness stops working.
The backlight issue should be a catalyst bug as it was working in 12.8

Ello'
Nope, I'm not on [testing], I'm on a unmodified 3.8. VirtualBox dies when it tries to resize the display, the last thing it says is
Display::handleDisplayResize(): uScreenId = 0, pvVRAM=00007f1200000000 w=1024 h=768 bpp=24 cbLine=0xC00, flags=0x1
and then it freezes and completely stops responding (need to kill the processes manually).

I'd add a note: the brightness doesn't change either if I change values directly in /sys/class/backlight/acpi_video*/brightness
