[Solved] 50-synaptics editing and touchpad does not work

After launching the game Amnesia, my screen turned completely black, the mouse disappeared, and my computer froze. I remember saying that my graphic card wasn't supported, but I ignored it anyway. After force restarting the computer (no buttons worked), during the log in screen (xfce) the mouse was centered right in the middle of the screen, and the button on my Dell Inspiron 11z (F6) when pressed shows the touchpad with an x, never turns on.

My laptops has an i3 with xf86-input-synaptics 1.7.0-1.
Does not have xorg.conf files, xorg.conf.d files, xorg.conf.d/10-endev.conf files but it does have xorg.conf.d/50-synaptics.conf files.

Within that I checked https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=115196 and the Synaptics wiki and added (don't know how to copy paste without the mouse on the command line or chromium) some options that were missing. Restarted and the mouse does not work.

I ran cat for the xorg files and would like to copy paste them to see if there is something wrong.

I also checked the synclient -l and it is not loaded.

I'm assuming that Amnesia overwrote the mouse settings or the latest linux kernel did. Btw, I'm running testing, and community testing.

Any help will be appreciated, I really want to get back to using my computer.

It's not a hardware problem. I booted into Debian's rescue mode and the mouse worked. Also changed mouse to event* in the conf files. Nothing.

Re: [Solved] 50-synaptics editing and touchpad does not work

I finally found out how to copy paste without the mouse! :-). I have grown to be patient but it still time that was wasted, I've been learning a few things here and there though. Hopefully someone can help me so that I can get back to using my laptop again.

Here's my dmesg.log:

This is really not okay to do.  At the very least, use code tags.

I can't click the code bubble to pop up the symbol to convert it.

On a side note, I have downloaded and installed dkms to install psmouse-alps-1.3-alt.tbz that was mentioned in another thread. It does not do anything when I run sudo dkms autoinstall psmouse-alps-1.3-alt

Re: [Solved] 50-synaptics editing and touchpad does not work

You don't need to click anything you just use code tags around the stuff you want in the box.  They are like this [ code ] <journal stuff here> [ /code ].  But remove the spaces between teh square brackets and the code and /code parts.

I guess you can't really do that now since you can't click on anything.  I'll report it for you and have it fixed.

Re: [Solved] 50-synaptics editing and touchpad does not work

Do you have /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/10-evdev.conf?

[Note: evdev not endev.]

Incidentally, I don't see how a game can have overwritten system configuration unless it was running as root or something. Have you tried creating a fresh user account and logging into that?

Re: [Solved] 50-synaptics editing and touchpad does not work

Yes, they all uses events instead of mouse. I did not change anything:

 #
# Catch-all evdev loader for udev-based systems
# We don't simply match on any device since that also adds accelerometers
# and other devices that we don't really want to use. The list below
# matches everything but joysticks.

        Identifier "evdev pointer catchall"
        MatchIsPointer "on"
        MatchDevicePath "/dev/input/event*"
        Driver "evdev"
EndSection

Section "InputClass"
        Identifier "evdev keyboard catchall"
        MatchIsKeyboard "on"
        MatchDevicePath "/dev/input/event*"
        Driver "evdev"
EndSection

Section "InputClass"
        Identifier "evdev touchpad catchall"
        MatchIsTouchpad "on"
        MatchDevicePath "/dev/input/event*"
        Driver "evdev"
EndSection

Section "InputClass"
        Identifier "evdev tablet catchall"
        MatchIsTablet "on"
        MatchDevicePath "/dev/input/event*"
        Driver "evdev"
EndSection

Section "InputClass"
        Identifier "evdev touchscreen catchall"
        MatchIsTouchscreen "on"
        MatchDevicePath "/dev/input/event*"
        Driver "evdev"
EndSection

Edit: The mouse is frozen at login screen, but I'll create one and see if it works.

Re: [Solved] 50-synaptics editing and touchpad does not work

Did the following:

sudo mv psmouse-alps-1.3-alt.tbz /
cd /
sudo tar -xjf psmouse-alps-1.3alt.tbz
cd user
cd src
sudo dkms add psmouse/alps-1.3
sudo dkms install psmouse/alps-1.3

Restarted, uninstalled it, and Arceus told me there isn't an original module for this and the toggle to change the touchpad still doesn't work so maybe I don't have an alps driver. I thought that didn't matter since it still reverse engineering Dell's synaptic driver and other Dell Inspiron people reported it worked. I also couldn't

sudo rm psmouse-alps-1.3

. It tells me "cannot remove 'psmouse-alps-1.3': Is a directory".

Logging into another user did not reactivate the mouse. Only when I go to debian rescue mode and most likely other live CDs like Ubuntu.

Is there a way I can manually hit activate the touchpad? Like I said, pressing the button shows that it works but it shows the touchpad with an x, no matter how many times I press it.

Re: [Solved] 50-synaptics editing and touchpad does not work

I just disabled testing and community testing and when I did an Syu that:
bash-completion is at 2.1-2 compared to 2.1-1
dbus 1.6.10-1 | 1.6.8.6
dhcpcd 5.6.8-1 | 5.6.7-1
gcc 4.8.0-3 | 4.8.0-2
libdlap 2.4.35-2 | 2.4.35-1
libpipeline 1.2..3-1 | 1.2.2-1
libpulse 3.99.1-1 | 3.0-3
linux 3.9.2 | 3.8.10-1
linux-firmware 20130430-1 | 20121118-1
linux-headers 3.9.2 | 3.8.10-1
pciutils 3.2.0-2 | 3.1.10-1
pulseaudio 3.99.101 | 3.0-3
util-linux 2.23-1 | 2.22.2-2
zlib 1.2.8-1 | 1.2.7-1
And of course Gnome 3.8.

I'm looking for a way to bulk degrade these. I think this is the problem, the kernel right now is too advanced for the touchpad drivers.

Well, downgrading and a restart didn't work. I'll just double check the synaptics wiki. What the hell could it be?

Re: [Solved] 50-synaptics editing and touchpad does not work

I'll be honest this is the same Dell / kernel related bug that happened to me before installing Windows 8 when it first came out. How do I copy the result of

sudo pacman -Qs

and

sudo pacman -Qm

into a text file. I just plan to learn how to use larch, archiso, or archboot to create a custom ISO with what I had rather than tackling this bug.

Re: [Solved] 50-synaptics editing and touchpad does not work

Can I see your synaptics.conf file?  On my first look, these two lines of your xorg log set red flags for me:

[ 18.282] (II) No input driver specified, ignoring this device.
[ 18.282] (II) This device may have been added with another device file.

Also, which kind of touchpad do you have?  I'm curious as to which symptoms you're facing.  Can you move the mouse?  If there's a physical button, does it send a click event?

To redirect the output of a program into a file, do this, for example:

$ pacman -Qs > output_file

This will overwrite output_file.  If you want to append and not overwrite, use >>

See http://www.tldp.org/LDP/abs/html/io-redirection.html .

However, I don't think this will be necessary - let's only do this as an absolute last resort.

Re: [Solved] 50-synaptics editing and touchpad does not work

What I ended up doing last night was checking if in Android x86 my mouse worked, it did- installed Ubuntu 13.04 over it, also confirmed that the mouse works. So in Debian, Ubuntu, Android the touchpad works except in Arch. I'm jayvansantos answering over this thread: http://en.community.dell.com/support-fo … 78426.aspx so I'm certain it's this same bug.

I believe it's Synaptics_v16_2_21. I don't have a mouse, I have a touchpad, the cursor doesn't even show up. I touch the activater (F6), the click event works but only pops up with an x (like it can never activate).

Edit: One moment while I reboot.

Re: [Solved] 50-synaptics editing and touchpad does not work

It's clear that the kernel is recognizing the touchpad properly - and X acknowledges the presence of the device but then goes on to ignore it

This section seems fishy to me:

Section "InputClass"
        Identifier "touchpad ignore duplicates"
        MatchIsTouchpad "on"
        MatchOS "Linux"
        MatchDevicePath "/dev/input/event*"
        Option "Ignore" "on"
EndSection

Can you delete/comment it out and report back?

I don't think it matters, but here's what it looks like when I press the Touchpad activator. JfmKm8r.jpeg

My synaptics.conf now reads:

Awesome! Just curious... Did you originally copy your synaptics.conf from another os?

Re: [Solved] 50-synaptics editing and touchpad does not work

No. I did a full system upgrade with community testing and testing enabled that updated other kernel. Upon launching Amnesia it froze and I had to reboot. Then I followed the Instructions in the Synaptics wiki and manually copied the default settings. I only copied the options settings and did not add what I commented out. I thought that was normal so I left it there

Re: [Solved] 50-synaptics editing and touchpad does not work

I have that stanza in my copy of the file as well and until a few hours ago mine was entirely default. My touchpad has worked fine with it, mind. But I think it must be part of the default file installed by Arch.
