Hi,
I have this hotel_wifi network profile:
Description='A simple open wireless connection'
Interface=wlan0
Connection=wireless
Security=none
ESSID='Hotel Wifi'
IP=dhcp
IP6=dhcp
# Uncomment this if your ssid is hidden
#Hidden=yes
and strangely a netctl start hotel_wifi renders me this:
Mai 01 00:57:08 horus systemd[1]: Starting Networking for netctl profile hotel_wifi...

Are you sure your wifi device is wlan0? What's the output of
# ip link
"Oh, they have the internet on computers now."
Offline
Please post output for
$ ls -lah /etc/netctl
and
$ wpa_cli -i wlan0 scan; wpa_cli -i wlan0 scan_results

It can be seen based on the provided journal output that the kernel has assigned the interface the name wlan0. Running this check will not be necessary.

$ ls -lah /etc/netctl
Kinda curious about what you're looking for here, but here you go:
$ ls -lah /etc/netctl/
total 52K
drwxr-xr-x 5 root root 4,0K Mai 1 20:06 .
drwxr-xr-x 101 root root 12K Mai 1 22:31 ..

drwxr-xr-x 2 root root 4,0K Mar 27 18:31 hooks

drwxr-xr-x 2 root root 4,0K Mar 27 18:31 interfaces
-rw------- 1 root root 282 Abr 13 18:36 ter
and
$ wpa_cli -i wlan0 scan; wpa_cli -i wlan0 scan_results
Not much luck here...
$ wpa_cli -i wlan0 scan; wpa_cli -i wlan0 scan_results
Failed to connect to non-global ctrl_ifname: wlan0 error: No such file or directory
Failed to connect to non-global ctrl_ifname: wlan0 error: No such file or directory
Result is the same if I try to run each of them separately, either with or without sudo.
I couldn't find the 'scan' command in the man page for wpa_cli, but I believe this should be useful in its stead.
$ sudo iwlist wlan0 scan

It can be seen based on the provided journal output that the kernel has assigned the interface the name wlan0. Running this check will not be necessary.
Yeah, as ub1quit33 says, my interface really is wlan0. I had a udev rule for that long before the Great Interface Name Breakage promoted by udev a little while ago. First time having this damn Broadcom card came in handy. Since it was already broken, I already had a fix [1] in place for it
But thank you for your interest anyway, murffatksig, I appreciate you trying to help me.

Kinda curious about what you're looking for here, but here you go:
Just gathering as much information as possible
Not much luck here...
$ wpa_cli -i wlan0 scan; wpa_cli -i wlan0 scan_results Failed to connect to non-global ctrl_ifname: wlan0 error: No such file or directory Failed to connect to non-global ctrl_ifname: wlan0 error: No such file or directory
Result is the same if I try to run each of them separately, either with or without sudo.
I couldn't find the 'scan' command in the man page for wpa_cli
This issue is of particular interest. Please post output from the following command.
pacman -Qi $(pacman -Qo $(which wpa_cli) | awk '{print $5}')

Also, please cat any files in this directory, posting the output

Can you post the output of running
$ wpa_cli scan; wpa_cli scan_results
without the iface specification? Also, pls don't forget to cat all files in /etc/netctl/interfaces and post output
Are you able to connect through a different wireless connection manager such as wicd or NetworkManager?
Offline
Also, please cat any files in this directory, posting the output
vitoreiji wrote:drwxr-xr-x 2 root root 4,0K Mar 27 18:31 interfaces
It's empty...
$ ls -lah /etc/netctl/interfaces/
total 8,0K
drwxr-xr-x 2 root root 4,0K Mar 27 18:31 .
drwxr-xr-x 5 root root 4,0K Mai 1 20:06 ..
I should say, though, that I can connect to other networks using this interface, WPA, WEP and open alike. I just don't keep the profiles around...
Also, this connection used to work, I did connect to this hotel wifi just last week, but it was another floor, and probably a different Access Point. Nonetheless, the error messasges were really puzzling...

Done. Sorry, I didn't see your second post until after I submitted my reply (because I spend a lot of time checking my posts for tyops).

I haven't tried that, but I'll have to spend some time learning how to use them to give you a useful reply. I can't do it today, it's bed time for me here, and I have to work tomorrow moring.
I'll post my results with the other connection managers as soon as possible.
Again, thank you for your interest and patience.

For simplicity's sake, I recommend use of wicd, as it has an ncurses interface.
# pacman -S wicd
$ wicd-curses
See if that's able to connect when you get a chance, and let's go from there

As far as I know wpa_cli only works when a wpa_supplicant is running. When the supplicant is started on a interface, a socket for that interface is placed under /run/wpa_supplicant/INTERFACE. This socket is used to communicate with the supplicant.
And as there is no supplicant running for your interface, you cannot talk to it with wpa_cli.
So you should try to start wpa_supplicant for that interface first. By creating a minimal wpa_supplicant.conf for that hotel_wifi, you should be able to diagonse the problem further by passing -d (debug switch) to wpa_supplicant.
# wpa_supplicant -cMINIMAL_CONFIG -iwlan0 -d
To generate that configuration, take a look at wpa_supplicant.conf manpages, there is an example for networks with security=none. This way you can be sure whether its a (wpa_supplicant) config related issue or if the issue is really about netctl.
Hope I could help you!

So, I have some news, and I have mixed feeling about them.
I started this thread on wednesday, and thursday, when I got back to the hotel, I could connect to the AP, but the connection was useless. I had almost 100% packet loss when trying to ping even the gateway, which leads me to believe that the problem was a defective AP.
I was also out of luck, because my 3G device couldn't get a signal, despite all the cursing and threatening I dedicated to it, so I spent the whole evening offline (the horror). That, plus friday being a really busy day at work, is the reason I didn't get back to you sooner.
I'm back home now, but I'll be back to the same hotel yet again next week, so let's see what happens.
Thank you for all the help!

Thank you, DanielOertwig, I'll try that when I get back there.

Cool stuff. I learned something

So... Right now I'm sitting in the hallway, in front of the door of my hotel room. And the connection works just fine. As soon as I step into the room, the connection just stops working. Literally, I get 20cm past the door and the pings will just stop coming. This is ridiculous, and I will talk to the hotel staff, but I guess this is it for this thread...
Oh, and it seems like the authentication thing is normal, according to the journal I'm authenticated right now, even though the security is set to none. Not sure what this means, but anyways...
Well, thanks for all your answers, everyone, I sure did learn some things from them!

Hopefully you can get this sorted with the hotel. But have you tried using a different kernel module for your card? I have seen reports from others indicating the sometimes b43 works great and others that only wl will do the trick.
I just got a new dual band broadcom card (BCM43228), so I have been learning a bit mroe about broadcom lately. Though this card is only supported by the wl module at the moment. Who wouldda thunk that broadcom would ever actually work well with Linux? It is certainly a hell of a lot better than the realtek pile of crap that came with the machine (it used the infamous rtl8192ce). Unfortunately, since it is a Thinkpad, there are only four cards that are in the bios whitelist... I now own three of them.
