Sound stopped working

Hi.

It used to work.

I have problem with sound. Yesterday It does work, but today it stopped working. I'm not sure if it is because of some updates, I haven't noticed anything connected to sound. The only difference is that I uninstalled mplayer2. Then it stopped working - but I'm not sure if it was because of this.

I tried:
reinstall alsa, alsa-plugins, alsa-utils, vlc, mplayer2
install pulseaudio, oss (without configuration)
reboot
unmute all chanels in alsamixer
connecting headphones

Re: Sound stopped working

You're not the only one. I have exactly the same issue. I ran all the commands you did and nothing special shows up. Could it be the update to kernel 3.8.8 ?

Re: Sound stopped working

Okay. I just fixed my issue but I'm not sure which one of the following two fixed it :
1) in systemd I had the alsa-restore service running but not the alsa-store so I activated the latter and rebooted
2) After reboot I did the following. I have two sound playback devices : one on my motherboard and one on my nvidia card. For some reason in KDE the sound applet was pointing to the nvidia card. By selecting the other device (on motherboard) I noticed that the volume on this one was set to zero ... so I increased the volume. I also upgraded yesterday my nvidia driver so this might have caused this change

Re: Sound stopped working

alsa-restore and alsa-store are both loaded, so it is not the cause.

dan@530uarch ~ $ systemctl status alsa-restore.service
alsa-restore.service - Restore Sound Card State
   Loaded: loaded (/usr/lib/systemd/system/alsa-restore.service; static)
   Active: inactive (dead) since Wed 2013-04-24 00:09:25 CEST; 1min 58s ago
  Process: 245 ExecStart=/usr/sbin/alsactl restore (code=exited, status=0/SUCCESS)

dan@530uarch ~ $ systemctl status alsa-store.service
alsa-store.service - Store Sound Card State
   Loaded: loaded (/usr/lib/systemd/system/alsa-store.service; static)
   Active: inactive (dead)

And I have only one audio device (according to logs and alsamixer), so it will be maybe another problem.

Thanks anyway

Re: Sound stopped working

i have issues too. i think it has to do with pulseaudio and some faulty kernel driver introduced recently (i suppose).

Re: Sound stopped working

Same for me after system upgrade on 2013-05-01:

pacmatic -Syu

Since then, no Audio output via HDMI anymore. Mainboard is Intel DH67BL.
Before upgrade, it worked. Audio via normal audio connector also still works.

$ aplay -D plughw:0,3 /usr/share/sounds/alsa/Front_Center.wav
Wiedergabe: WAVE '/usr/share/sounds/alsa/Front_Center.wav' : Signed 16 bit Little Endian, Rate: 48000 Hz, mono

But on the connected (via HDMI) TV is nothing to hear. Video on TV via HDMI works. Checked also alsamixer volume setting.

With this, I hear the sound on the speakers connected with the Mainboard:

$ aplay /usr/share/sounds/alsa/Front_Center.wav
Wiedergabe: WAVE '/usr/share/sounds/alsa/Front_Center.wav' : Signed 16 bit Little Endian, Rate: 48000 Hz, mono
$ aplay -l

I've read this, but did not help:
https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Ta … chitecture

Here the list of upgraded packages:

grep 2013-05-01.*pgraded /var/log/pacman.log

http://pastebin.com/vXjp3Bw4

I also downgraded to the kernel version before upgrade:

pacman -U /var/cache/pacman/pkg/linux-3.7.4-1-i686.pkg.tar.xz

But that did not solve the problem. Also using linux-lts kernel did not help.

I have posted this also on the german Arch Linux board:

I have similar issue. Speakers works fine until I plug and unplug the headphones, then speakers stop working.
After rebooting it works again.

Re: Sound stopped working

Similar issue here as well. My output jack stopped working. I am using gnome-shell, and I can see that when I plug my headphones, the headphone icon appears on the top panel, but there is no sound. Tried unmuting everything with alsamixer and it didn't change anything. Also in pavucontrol I can see the sound graphs moving, but there is no sound.
These issues started about 2-3 days ago, supposedly because of an update.

Re: Sound stopped working

i found that pulseaudio works as long as pavucontrol is open in the background. if i close it, the daemon just dies on me a few seconds after i start anything sound related, like watching a video? i'm so confused.
