vlc video stuttering, plays fine in mplayer

I have arch running in virtualbox.

Using mplayer with vo=x11 it plays the video smoothly. Using VLC with the output also set to X11 just gives me stuttering sound with most of the video being black.

anyone know with what seems like the same settings, VLC doesn't work but mplayer does? they both seem to be using libavcodec as well.

edit: it may be only with wmv files
