No audio in Pulseaudio

I've recently installed KDE and I can't seem to get Pulseaudio to work.  I'm on a Thinkpad W510, I've followed both the ALSA and Pulseaudio wikis and still no sound.

On startup I receive multiple KDE notifications to the effect of:

KDE detected that one or more internal devices were removed.
Do you want KDE to permanently forget about these devices?
This is the list of devices KDE thinks can be removed:
Capture: HDA Intel MID (CX20585 Analog)
Capture: HDA Intel MID, CONEXANT Analog (Default Audio Device)
Capture: PulseAudio Sound Server
Output: HDA Intel MID (CX20585 Analog)
Output: HDA Intel MID, CONEXANT Analog (Default Audio Device)
Output: PulseAudio Sound Server

Here's the output of aplay -l

aplay -l
**** List of PLAYBACK Hardware Devices ****
card 0: MID [HDA Intel MID], device 0: CX20585 Analog [CX20585 Analog]
  Subdevices: 1/1
  Subdevice #0: subdevice #0
card 1: NVidia [HDA NVidia], device 3: HDMI 0 [HDMI 0]
  Subdevices: 1/1
  Subdevice #0: subdevice #0
card 1: NVidia [HDA NVidia], device 7: HDMI 0 [HDMI 0]
  Subdevices: 1/1
  Subdevice #0: subdevice #0
card 1: NVidia [HDA NVidia], device 8: HDMI 0 [HDMI 0]
  Subdevices: 1/1
  Subdevice #0: subdevice #0
card 1: NVidia [HDA NVidia], device 9: HDMI 0 [HDMI 0]
  Subdevices: 1/1
  Subdevice #0: subdevice #0

When I try the following:

aplay /usr/share/sounds/alsa/Front_Center.wav
Playing WAVE '/usr/share/sounds/alsa/Front_Center.wav' : Signed 16 bit Little Endian, Rate 48000 Hz, Mono

there are no errors, but no sound.  I've checked that the channels are unmuted in alsamixer, and I'm using the default /etc/asound.conf

/etc/asound.conf
# Use PulseAudio by default
pcm.!default {
  type pulse
  fallback "sysdefault"
  hint {
    show on
    description "Default ALSA Output (currently PulseAudio Sound Server)"
  }
}

ctl.!default {
  type pulse
  fallback "sysdefault"
}

# vim:set ft=alsaconf:

I've switched phonon backends, originally tried gstreamer, now using vlc but still the same result.

The weird thing is that when I restart pulseaudio:

pulseaudio -k
pulseaudio -D

everything works fine...until I reboot.

Now I guess I could just write a script to do this at login, but I'd like to know if there's a deeper issue and try to correct that.  Hopefully this is enough info, thanks for the help in advance!

Re: No audio in Pulseaudio

There it is:

In the before:

suspend-sink alsa_output.pci-0000_01_00.1.hdmi-stereo yessuspend-sink alsa_output.pci-0000_01_00.1.hdmi-stereo yes
suspend-sink alsa_output.pci-0000_00_1b.0.analog-stereo yes

Since the before and after both, defsult output is set to analog-stereo, we don't care about HDMI being disabled.

Try this.  Get to the 'before' state, and issue the following command:

pacmd suspend-sink alsa_output.pci-0000_00_1b.0.analog-stereo no
Then, try to play something.

Still no sound....not even

aplay /usr/share/sounds/alsa/Front_Center.wav

Restarting pulseaudio restores sound.

Re: No audio in Pulseaudio

Drat !!

I am running low on ideas.  How are you starting Pulseaudio in the first place? (i.e. the one that is mute that you have to kill).   Also, check the owner of the process in the before and after state.

Also, at this point I would install and run pavucontrol.  On the playback tab, does a playback client appear when you try to play sounds using aplay with the initial mute load of pulseaudio?  Do the level meters bounce?  If you muck with the source and sink controls, can you cause it to work?  Are all of the channels is pavucontrol turned up and not muted?

One last thing you can try is to delete or move your ~/.pulse directory and your ~/.pulse-cookie file and try again.

Re: No audio in Pulseaudio

There is a way to get pulseaudio working - have you tried the volume control manager "pavucontrol" if you have that installed then go to the configuration menu - disable the onboard sound card which mine appears like "Cedar HDMI Audio" and then go to output devices and switch the analog audio sterio to on and see if that works.

Re: No audio in Pulseaudio

I had today after a system upgrade a similar problem and I discovered somehow pulsaudio had been muted.

Run pavucontrol and check it out ...

Re: No audio in Pulseaudio

Hi, I have the very same problem with KDE 4.10, after switching from Gnome 3.8.

With Gnome all was ok. With KDE I get a notification about sound devices removed at every reboot. Sometimes sound works, sometimes not. When sound doesn't work, I see both in pavucontrol and in the KDE settings the "internal audio" device with "digital output" as the only available profile; restarting the system and\or pulseaudio all the profiles are available again, and sounds works too (selecting "analog surround 4.0 Output + Analog Stereo Input" that is the right one). I tried also to delete the ~/.pulse directory and restarting pulse: all worked until next reboot, as usual.

I have an ATI Radeon with HDMI that shows up as a sound source, disabled in pavucontrol (but I can always see the HDMI), and an Intel HD Audio Controller ICH9 as the Built-in audio. On this computer I've been running Gnome for years, with both Arch, Debian and Ubuntu, and pulseaudio always worked out of the box, so I think it should be something related to KDE, my configuration or some update, not to the computer itself.

Re: No audio in Pulseaudio

Sorry for the delay, I've been traveling all weekend.

ewaller wrote:

Honestly I'm not sure....I installed Pulseaudio and per the wiki, assumed it was started automatically.  I checked in System Settings->Startup & Shutdown and I don't see anything related to Pulseaudio (no Autostart entry nor a KDE service).  However it seems like Pulseaudio is running:

[bskjerven@fermat ~]$ ps -ef | grep pulse
bskjerv+   842     1  1 10:15 ?        00:00:01 /usr/bin/pulseaudio --start
bskjerv+   872   842  0 10:15 ?        00:00:00 /usr/lib/pulse/gconf-helper
bskjerv+  1327   864  0 10:17 pts/1    00:00:00 grep --color pulse

And after I restart Pulseaudio:

[bskjerven@fermat ~]$ pulseaudio -k
[bskjerven@fermat ~]$ pulseaudio --start
[bskjerven@fermat ~]$ ps -ef | grep pulse
bskjerv+  1334     1  1 10:18 ?        00:00:00 pulseaudio --start
bskjerv+  1338  1334  0 10:18 ?        00:00:00 /usr/lib/pulse/gconf-helper
bskjerv+  1341   864  0 10:18 pts/1    00:00:00 grep --color pulse

Two things stand out to me. 1) My username is incorrect and 2) the restarted instance of pulse doesn't have the full path.  This seems like it would be trivial, but at this point I don't know.

One last thing you can try is to delete or move your ~/.pulse directory and your ~/.pulse-cookie file and try again.

The strange thing is...I don't have either of those.  That, along with the incorrect username above, indicates to me that something is screwy with how I'm starting Pulseaudio at startup, but I'm not sure about this.

There is a way to get pulseaudio working - have you tried the volume control manager "pavucontrol" if you have that installed then go to the configuration menu - disable the onboard sound card which mine appears like "Cedar HDMI Audio" and then go to output devices and switch the analog audio sterio to on and see if that works.

With pavucontrol I'm able to get sound.  In Configuration I set the HDMI Audio Controller to of, the Built-In Audio is set to "Analog Stereo Output".  In Output Devices the only device is "Built-in Audio Analog Stereo" and it's on.  The changes survive a reboot, and I do have sound now without having to restart Pulseaudio.  I'm going to hold off marking this as solved, I'd like to try and figure out if the username/.pulse issues are something I should be worried about.

Re: No audio in Pulseaudio

@poogliamarci, pretty much my deal exactly. The only difference is I have an nVidia card. HDMI always shows up, but it's random as to whether sound works or not. Heck, one time I even had "KDE Event Sounds", but nothing else -- YouTube, video/audio files, etc. wouldn't play.

If I use GDM to log in to KDE -- sound works. If I use KDM to log in to KDE sound DOES NOT work (reliably, anyway).

It's going to take a smarter brain than mine to figure it out I think!
