startx causes freezing with gnome 3

Hi there!

I am a newbie in arch linux and I finally succeeded in installation without X. However, I got stuck in X installation.

I'm using Arch Linux 3.9.2-1 in my Macbook Pro 8,1 and trying to use Gnome 3.

I installed gnome successfully but It freezes when I execute startx.

When I execute startx,
1. black screen for 5~10 second.
2. got message "Oh no! Something has gone wrong." and I clicked "Log out" button.
3. black screen again and freezes.

I know there are already tons of questions but I couldn't resolve my issue with any solutions..

Here are my configuration files.

Hi,
Can you tell how did you successfully installed gnome?
Was it a simple "pacman -S gnome" or you had to configure something else?

Thanks for your quick reply smile

Yes, I just executed "pacman -S gnome" and "pacman -S gnome-extra".
and I wrote a .xinitrc script.
I consulted Gnome page(https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Gnome#Installation) in ArchWiki.

What's happen when you execute startx as root?

Re: startx causes freezing with gnome 3

First, It launched kind of xterm successfully without "/root/.xinitrc". There are 3 shell windows.

Although I'm not sure whether it is xterm, my macbook pro's trackpad and keyboard works perfectly. I can start nautilus and gnome-terminal which don't have menu bar there.

Could I consider drivers are set perfectly?

After I created "/root/.xinitrc" and wrote "exec gnome" in there, It doesn't work again. Same behavior...

Re: startx causes freezing with gnome 3

Try to login with GDM once (sudo systemctl start gdm.service). If that works, you can permanently enable GDM by issuing sudo systemctl enable gdm.service.

Thanks for your reply.

However, sudo systemctl start gdm.service gives me the error message "Oh no! Something has gone wrong." again.

Additionally, I got a status message during freezing of gdm.

I'm googling with this message.

Re: startx causes freezing with gnome 3

On my machine sudo pacman -Qs xf86-video gives,

local/xf86-video-fbdev 0.4.3-3 (xorg-drivers xorg)
    X.org framebuffer video driver
local/xf86-video-intel 2.21.6-1 (xorg-drivers xorg)
    X.org Intel i810/i830/i915/945G/G965+ video drivers
local/xf86-video-vesa 2.3.2-3 (xorg-drivers xorg)
    X.org vesa video driver

So maybe you could try removing the modesetting driver and rebooting. Worth a try.

Re: startx causes freezing with gnome 3

There quite a few posts about gnome not working on the forums, from your drivers list it looks like you don't have an external graphics card?

You might need to change the acceleration method for your intel driver:
https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/In … ion_method
I think gnome doesn't work with one of the methods (not sure which one)

Otherwise look at this
https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/GN … .2B_cursor

This might be unrelated but if I remember correctly, it's not necessary to have a xorg.conf file, I think it's better to rename that file so everything is done automatically

*Edit

Have a read through this if you haven't already:
