filesystem Update Error /bin exists in filesystem

alright, so it's from this package: https://aur.archlinux.org/packages/ntfs-config/

As you can see, it's already been updated for the change, but your package is behind. Do you need this to boot your system up? Meaning do you have anything important to the system on NTFS? If not, just remove it "pacman --root /mnt -R ntfs-config", finish the update, then rebuild and reinstall once you get up and running.

I removed it and I made the last point of your guide

pacman --root /mnt -Su

which installed filesystem. But I don't fully understand what do mean with rebuild. Is just to "pacman -Syu"?
Because I can see that there are a lot of packages to update.

I was talking about ntfs-config specifically. It's in the AUR, so you have to rebuild the package with makepkg to reinstall it, but do this after you get the system up and running again.

As long as the filesystem package installed correctly in step 6, you should be good to reboot.

So today I tried to do my usual upgrade of "pacman -Syu" but I got the following errors:

"error: failed to commit transaction (conflicting files)
filesystem: /bin exists in filesystem
filesystem: /sbin exists in filesystem
filesystem: /usr/sbin exists in filesystem
Errors occurred, no packages were upgraded."

So I'm not sure how I'm supposed to upgrade my filesystem. I did google this and got various results. The most prominent was that this is a very touchy issue and could totally break my system if I fudge it up.

I figured that I want to be on the side of caution and come here first just to make sure that I'm doing this right. I did see that "pacman -Syuf" was a bad, bad idea.

pacman shouldn't be in either of those directories. Did you move it there yourself?

pacman has been in /usr/bin for a long, long time. The oldest version in the ARM is 3.3.2 from Oct 2009, and pacman is in /usr/bin. If you have pacman in /bin or /sbin (ie /new_root/bin or /new_root/sbin), something is seriously wrong with your system and I'm not sure where to even start.

What is causing this error? How can I know which packages are in conflict?

i feel the need to say that this deal has been handled horribly. I see lots of defensive responses to questions that include "read the news". well, I read the news, and the news told me to look for issues and "fix it". great. thanks for the really nice help. further, when I followed the news directions to the letter, problems remained. nowhere in the news does it tell me to remove the offending directories. very poor. sorry, but this is just poor.

dvh, the only reason the update wouldn't work is if you had *unsupported* packages or files outside of pacman's control the in dirs in question. Why would you expect the devs to fix your unsupported crap?

Fix means to change the package so they install to /usr/bin instead of the old dirs.

judging from the response just above, it would be expected that users would "fix the packages" so that they installed in /usr/bin. anyone else think this might be a bit unreasonable?

dvh, if you had nothing but supported packages, the upgrade would have gone very smoothly. The devs did a good job in making sure of that. I would bet anything that you had old package that are no longer in the repo or you had manually put files into the dirs in question.

As for it being unreasonable, not at all. All of the official package were updated for you, all that you need to take care of are the ones outside of the dev's control.

so we disagree. and you would lose your bet of "anything". I have added NOTHING that i did not get from the repositories. sure, if i correctly interpreted the detailed explanation of "fix it", then this might have worked...but I am not so sure of that. we will gain nothing by arguing here, but it is apparent from the activity on this particular topic that not all has gone smoothly.
