makepkg localization quirks

I don't recall changing anything in my localization settings, I want all the messages in English, but for some reason some of them appear in Polish.

I aborted and tried again - everything was in English now.

I've seen such behavior once or twice before in the past couple days, any idea how to fix / debug it?

Yes, makepkg / pacman is the only place I run into this so far.
It happens intermittently, I run makepkg - I get mixed-up languages. I abort it and run again - w/o changing anything - I get only English.
As I don't know what causes this quirk using 'LC_MESSAGES=C' may or may not work ;-P

Is your keymap set explicitly? Though it should not give you another language even if the keymap is set to Polish anymore than it should give me us just because I have a us keyboard. (But it would be hard for me to detect if it was doing this.)

I don't think keymap matters and it's only set for tty. This weird stuff happened in X, in urxvt.

It's not a huge issue, I'm just curious what the hell happened, maybe we can figure it out :-)

It shouldn't. However, according to my output, my keymap is not set in X but I nonetheless get the correct characters when I type "@#|~ for example.

Assuming you do want Polish enabled, do you set your preferences for English explicitly in /etc/locale.conf?

I'm going to remove it and set all the stuff in /etc/locale.conf, instead of exporting it per user.

I'd rather use Polish LC_TIME, but I'll try to get used to the US one.

The latter. Also, I am confused by where the "polish" comes from. Why don't we get "english" or "american" or whatever as well? (Why don't I get "welsh" in my output?)

Ah, this has nothing to do with makepkg, it's just locale stuff.
I don't fiddle with locale so I didn't immediately remember where does 'polish' come from and how to remove it. Maybe x33a or somebody else knows more about it.

Heh, I never noticed "polish" in the output. I thought you were just referring to the polish locale.

As cfr said, this is indeed strange.

Just shooting in the dark, but you can try a

# find /etc -type f -exec grep -H polish {} \;
# find /usr -type f -exec grep -H polish {} \;

to see all the files that contain "polish" in them.

Wow, I had a strange sense of déjà vu as I read that you're currently using urxvt. In fact, I reminisced about the old days after installing this rxvt clone.

A good starting point is to read the urxvt(7) manual page, i.e. `man 7 urxvt`. However, try this stuff for now:

find ~/.[bcX]* -maxdepth 1 -type f -exec grep -Hne LC_ -e pl_PL -e polish {} \;

But why? Is this just arbitrary? Or is there some principle which determines whether the name of a language is aliased to a locale?

Also, I'm assuming this does not actually explain the puzzle which started this thread at all?

I guess I'll wrap it up and you can open another thread about locale aliases.
Since I'm using only English locale now, it's kinda "fixed" for me. I can still use LC_COLLATE=C and LC_MESSAGES=C and nowadays I seldom use 'date', so I don't miss Polish locale that much (<day of the week><month><day of the month><time><timezone><year> is just not my style, but 'date' is pretty flexible in its output).
