[SOLVED] Can't start x on laptop with 3.10 kernel and nvidia driver

I updated my system today , the packages: linux, lirc-utils, nvidia and virtualbx-host-modules

Now I am admittedly still quite the Arch newbie, I've only used arch for about 3 months, but I've always taken the time to research any issues I've had and fix stuff on my own. So far I've had no serious problems. However, should the problem be something I have overlooked, then I do apologize and I would certainly appreciate some tips.

But after these updates, when I was about to start my Xfce dekstop (I do not use a display manager so I start it with 'startxfce4' from the console after boot) the system shut down. I did not get any error messages, my system simply shut down. The last thing I would see just before the shut down was:

loading extension GLX

This is not directly related to Xfce since starting just x had the exact same result.

I am using a laptop, the Asus G75VX. Since nvidia was an updgrade package it will probably be helpful to mention that I have the: nvidia GTX 670 MX gpu.

After downgrading these packages, everything works as it should.

Re: [SOLVED] Can't start x on laptop with 3.10 kernel and nvidia driver

have you tried updating the nvidia driver itself with out doin a full upgrade?  that would help anyone trying to solve this with you an idea if it was the kernel update or the graphics driver update

See also this topic.
Note that the nvidia package update contains the same driver version, but includes some additional patches to make it loadable in 3.10 .
The two upgrades can not be tried individually.

I don't mean to belittle you, but "shutdown" to me means your system powered off, in the same way that "# shutdown" would cause (after a minute). Please be clear about these things. If you mean that your X display closed without displaying what you expected it to, make this clear.

As it stands, it's unlikely that you saw "loading extension GLX" before your system powered off, unless you experienced a power cut mid-shutdown.

Unfortunately I don't use virtualbox, so I can't say for sure where you problem originates. I am simply trying to encourage you to help others help you help yourself.

Re: [SOLVED] Can't start x on laptop with 3.10 kernel and nvidia driver

For a (hopefully) more clear description, read the topic I linked to.
He's describing the exact same problem I have, so I'll explain.

What he means is that his system powers down. Not just his X display. And it does not do it cleanly either, judging from the journal recovery on next boot.

This does not make much sense to me. You mean a power cut in the middle of loading X?
The "loading extension glx" message appears in the output of startx.

VirtualBox is actually not relevant here. The cause seems to be nvidia + Linux 3.10 (but not on all machines).

Re: [SOLVED] Can't start x on laptop with 3.10 kernel and nvidia driver

The reason why I'm confused is that I was using 3.10 since rc1 (using unofficial nvidia patches from the nvidia forums to get past the "void return" 3.10 changes). I'm now using 3.11 with different patches. I have experienced none of these problems.

If your system is being powered off, I'd expect typical systemd messages, e.g. "Remounting filesystems RO. Storage is finalized" or whatever it says, to be displayed. Not X11 messages.

It does not mount any filesystems ro before going down, or shut down nicely in any way.
The system simply dies while loading X. It turns off.

Re: [SOLVED] Can't start x on laptop with 3.10 kernel and nvidia driver

To me, this sounds like your system is overheating, and shutting itself down to prevent and damage to various components. The increased fan activity prior to the poweroff reinforces this.

You may want to try the nvidia-beta package (see AUR), which I believe has fixes for the 3.10+ kernels. Alternatively, you could follow the safer route of downgrading the kernel and nvidia packages.

Re: [SOLVED] Can't start x on laptop with 3.10 kernel and nvidia driver

It seems so far that only laptop users have reported this issue.

And my apologies for not being sufficiently clear. Like TBoshoven says, the system does not shut down in a orderly fashion, it simply "dies" for a lack of better word. Like a desktop computer will if you just unplug the power cord.

Edit: Also, my system does not have the increase in fan speed. I am considering simply waiting to upgrade until the next nvidia version comes out and see if the issue is still present.

Re: [SOLVED] Can't start x on laptop with 3.10 kernel and nvidia driver

That was my bad, I was assuming that X was dying, and you were using ambiguous terminology to describe it. In the situation that TBoshoven and yourself have now described, it's clear what you mean.

If the nvidia beta doesn't address your problems, you may want to contact the nvidia devs: https://nvidia-submit.custhelp.com/app/ask

Using an Asus G75V here, same issue. kernel 3.10 and nvidia, system gets to the point of starting X and just powers off uncleanly. doing some tweaking of my boot to remove all extraneous modules etc to see if I can isolate the problem.

I just tried nvidia-beta and it doesn't resolve the issue, so I guess we should take this to the nvidia support.

Re: [SOLVED] Can't start x on laptop with 3.10 kernel and nvidia driver

Same hang here with a Thinkpad W530. I DO NOT use Optimus, my BIOS is set to "discrete graphics" only. My system does not overheat and power itself off, however. I just sit on an unusable black screen until a reboot occurs. The error messages in the journal for me said things like "GPU has fallen off the bus!", "/dev/nvidia0: input/output error", and something related to "os-pci".

This is an incompatibility between 3.10, the nvidia driver, and apparently motherboards that can support Optimus, even if the functionality is off. I'm considering attempting a BIOS upgrade sometime to see if that resolves the problem (or the noapic that is required to boot when you activate discrete graphics mode), but in the meantime, I have downgraded to 3.9 and its attendant kernel packages from a live environment and my machine is again in a working state.

Re: [SOLVED] Can't start x on laptop with 3.10 kernel and nvidia driver

It was also the issue woth ny Zenbook ux32vd with Optimus. I use discrete graphic only. After today's update I got a black screen with only Ctrl-alt-del working to reboot. Ctrl+Alt+F1 and other didn't switchd ttys. I went to BIOS and Enabled CSM. And system started working. But with CSM disabled it still boots into black screeen.

Re: [SOLVED] Can't start x on laptop with 3.10 kernel and nvidia driver

I did the exact same actions today as the OP and had the same results.

When I downgraded only linux to 3.10.2-1, my problems were solved.
The current version 3.10.3 seems to have a problem with the latest nvidia driver (319.32-1).

Re: [SOLVED] Can't start x on laptop with 3.10 kernel and nvidia driver

the issue found when kernel config active "CONFIG_IOMMU_SUPPORT" (do you not use kvm disable it and compile)

work nvidia 319.32-x and 325.08 on linux => 3.10

EDIT: Try to disable CONFIG_CALGARY_IOMMU and set CONFIG_HZ_1000

Re: [SOLVED] Can't start x on laptop with 3.10 kernel and nvidia driver

That sounds good!
I'll give it a try.

EDIT: Too bad. It does not work for me.
I recompiled my linux-ck kernel (3.10.4) with CONFIG_IOMMU_SUPPORT disabled, but the problem is still there.

Same is mine. Asus G75VX. X doesn't show up and fan start to blow at full throttle.
I'll wait for the new kernel to see if it will be fixed.

Re: [SOLVED] Can't start x on laptop with 3.10 kernel and nvidia driver

The problem still persists with the newest 325.15-1 nvidia driver with the 3.10.5 kernel. Still have to stick with 3.9.9 kernel and 319.32-2 nvidia to be able to start x.

I suppose we will have to wait for nvidia to (hopefully) give some feedback on this issue.

Re: [SOLVED] Can't start x on laptop with 3.10 kernel and nvidia driver

Nvidia has responded on the nvidia forums, they are able to reproduce the issue and are investigating. I believe there is not much else to do until nvidia release a driver where this issue is fixed.

I will mark this thread as solved once I have new drivers that fixes the issue.

Edit: I edited the topic title to be more informative about my issue, I realize it was not appropriately titled originally and gave too little information regarding my problem.
