Re: Progress on Unity under Arch Linux!

Slovenijakp, thanks for your help! This certainly got me closer! compiz.reset didn't do the trick, but moving to the dropbox repository helped (I also had to install from Unity-for-Arch-Extra). Now after logging in, I don't see a black screen anymore. Rather, I get the Ubuntu background with my home icon on the desktop, but no dash, sidebar, or top panel. Here is my .xsession-errors:

Re: Progress on Unity under Arch Linux!

Unity is currently broken because glew was recently updated to 1.10.0 and Unity is compiled against 1.9.0. I will rebuild ASAP.

With your latest rebuild I'm still booting into a blank desktop. You can check out my x-session-errors here. And again Chenxiaolong THANK YOU so much for your hard work! I know you've been extremely busy lately.

It turns on Nux needed to be rebuilt too. It should be in the repos now big_smile

Hopefully this will get Unity back up and running again!

hrrrmmm I just ran a update and didn't see an anything for Nux...I'll give it a while, maybe it just hasn't hit my mirror yet. I'll update this post if I see the update and it fixes the issue.

It should be in the repo now. If it hasn't shown up yet, you can download the package here: http://cxl.epac.to:8091/job/UFA-2.0-Build-nux/31/

Ok I still haven't seen the update yet. I did however install Nux manually. I'm still not getting anything.....:/ Here is my current xsession-errors if you wanted to have a look. This was a fresh install anyways I wouldn't mind if I had to wipe and reinstall to see if the problem persists. Is there any other information you would like from my current setup before I do that? Again thanks for your help!

I'd try compiz.reset and rebooting. It seems that logging out doesn't help anymore.

Wait, you mean to tell me that the first thing that I should have tried (but didn't) would fix all of my issues....interesting. Its all working again THANKS!!!!

Have you ever considered using social media (facebook page, google+ page, twitter) to notify your user base when not to update? I NEVER update Unity-for-Arch packages without checking out this thread first, but times like this, and other times (like when libpng was updated), those are small packages that I have no idea will break everything. I'd be kinda awesome if I was on a social media site and saw a big "***DON'T UPDATE FOR 12 HOURS***" warning. Plus it might make less work for you since you wouldn't have to worry about the forum blowing up if you know something is broken.

No problem big_smile

I don't think a social media page would help too much considering I'm always the last person to update smile But if a lot of people want it, I'll definitely create one.

Does anyone else have an issue with the unity panel sometimes consuming 100% of a processor and freeze up every now and then?

I notice for example, my time is lagging/outdated/frozen and the panel hangs every now and then.

I then have to issue this command to fix it:
kill -9 `ps -ef |grep unity-panel|awk '{print $2}'|tr '\n' ' '` ; sleep 1 && unity --replace&

It's a real pain...

Could be as a result of me using hud=13.04.0daily13.04.03-103...

Ok I believe the only thing hanging the unity panel and sometimes causing a complete desktop freeze is the pidgin integration into the panel.
If I remove pidgin-libnotify-ubuntu and restart pidgin the intermittent problem goes away.

I'll see if I can provide more info. It could be when there is some sort of network issue pidgin hangs the panel.

Sorry for the late response.
Try to login as guest (if you use lightdm, if not, just create a new user account) and report how it will go. I had similar errors days ago, and it worked if I logined as a guest.
If logging as guest/creating new user will go fine, rename the folders .cache, .compiz and .config into .cache2, .compiz2 and .config2
If logging as a guest/creating new user won't work, I don't know then. Try to do another system update (pacman -Syu) and then log in as a guest/another user again.

Re: Progress on Unity under Arch Linux!

Now I fixed Compiz and Unity in my [ayatana] repository: http://pkgbuild.com/~bgyorgy/ayatana.html

Unity still works without any patched packages, but indicator-appmenu and indicator-messages require a patched gtk3 package if you want to use them.

If you found any problems with my packages, please report them here: https://github.com/City-busz/ayatana-repository/issues

I hope that I'll have some time to update my repository to Unity 7.0 or 7.1 soon.

Re: Progress on Unity under Arch Linux!

unity-lens-applications doesn't work. Had to revert back.
metacity-ubuntu doesn't compile because of automake 1.14

Ciao
Gianluca

Edit:

to make metacity-ubuntu to compile correctly it is necessary first to install automake-1.12 from AUR.
In case it gives problems it is necessary to remove the links in /usr/bin called aclocal-1.12 and automake-1.12
Then you have to add in PKGBUILD, before make,
export AUTOMAKE=/usr/bin/automake-1.12
export ACLOCAL=/usr/bin/aclocal-1.12

After that unity-lens-applications works.

I also compiled and installed compiz-ubuntu last release

I'm trying to compile qt 4.8.5 without success
I need the help of a lord of IT as Chen...

Re: Progress on Unity under Arch Linux!

Does the value of UBUNTU_MENUPROXY env variable changed during releases? because I noticed, that some applications depend on "libappmenu.so" value instead of "1". For example netbeans ayatana source contains string:
if (!"libappmenu.so".equals(System.getenv("UBUNTU_MENUPROXY")))
And authors aren't going to fix that...

Maybe this change can be rolled back?

Re: Progress on Unity under Arch Linux!

I use the globalmenu with KDE and the value is libappmenu.so since a long time.
Why project do you mean? Do you mean https://code.google.com/p/java-swing-ayatana ?

Variable's value "1"  is exported in file /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc.d/80-unity-gtk-module, which is part of unity-gtk-module, which replaced appmenu-gtk some time ago?
In appmenu-gtk[2,3] packages there are files 80-appmenu-gtk3 and 80-appmenu, and they export "libappmenu.so" value

Why project do you mean? Do you mean https://code.google.com/p/java-swing-ayatana ?

and https://aur.archlinux.org/packages/mono … n-appmenu/
I fixed sources there manually

p.s. I fixed 80-unity-gtk-module file and haven't noticed any missbehaviour yet, netbeans working, all other stuff seems to work as well

Ok, I'll change the name for next version. I don't feel like rebuild all for a package name smile

unity-gtk-module don't replaces appmenu-gtk as its incompatible with the globalmenu spec.
Was it the right project? If yes: I done this too see: [1][2][3]

Re: Progress on Unity under Arch Linux!

Installed unity via the dropbox repository and everything works good so far, except the webapps. Same behavior in both browsers, chromium and firefox. Does anybody have a clue why?

Re: Progress on Unity under Arch Linux!

I use the unity-menubar.patch with my firefox build now but submenus only work when I open them on the second time. Any one with similar issues?
