Re: [SOLVED] -Syu broke things. After booting my screen goes black

It might be easier for troubleshooting purposes to install sshd while chrooted and log in through another machine. That will let you test things "live" and possibly reduce the amount of rebooting required.

Re: [SOLVED] -Syu broke things. After booting my screen goes black

I have almost exactly the same symptoms as tobit. After upgrading (31/08/13) with pacman -Syu, I was unable to boot into X, or at least, had a blank screen when x booted. I could blindly log in to a tty and reboot. I could start up in single user mode, and when I did, I reverted to linux-3.9.9-1-x86_64, together with dependencies, nvidia-304xx and virtualbox-host-modules. Back to square one, with x working normally. So I assume its one of these causing the problem, most likely either the nvidia driver or the kernel. However, since the symptoms are exactly the same as tobit's, its unlikely that its the nvidia driver (tobit is using intel driver). Which points to the kernel; linux-3.10.3-1.

I am using a Zareason Verix laptop, with MBR boot using grub2. The nvidia card is 650m.

I know that my setup is quite different from tobit's, but the similarity of the symptoms suggests a common cause to me.

Output of dmesg immediately after upgrade:

Re: [SOLVED] -Syu broke things. After booting my screen goes black

@rodmcrae,
You don't say what happens if you boot to the command line as opposed to single user or X. If things are OK then, you have very different symptoms from the OP.

@OP,
Can you post dmesg and/or journalctl -b? It really looks like there are bugs at work here, though. At least two judging by the forum posts. But I don't really know enough to say - I'm just extrapolating from the sociological data!

Re: [SOLVED] -Syu broke things. After booting my screen goes black

Rereading tobit's description, I can see that this is different. If I boot to the command line, I can see what I am doing, unlike tobit at this point. It is when I start X that I get a blank screen. I normally have X starting automatically, so I went straight to the blank screen. Once I turned off automatic starting of X, the difference became apparent. Sorry if this confused the issue.

Re: [SOLVED] -Syu broke things. After booting my screen goes black

I'd recommend starting a new thread in that case because I think both of your issues are going to get confusing otherwise and both of you are more likely to get useful advice with distinct threads for distinct issues.

There seem to be several different bugs around to do with display at the moment (and doubtless some config issues thrown in) so it is easy to think you have the same issue when the details actually differ. (I don't think everyone with even the same symptoms in terms of function is necessarily dealing with the same issue because some log messages look different even when the symptoms seem the same. But in this case, I think it is clear you have a different issue now you've checked things are OK out of X. I don't mean that isn't still a big problem, of course, but it looks like a different one!)

PS Oh, and welcome to Arch or the forums (just noticed your post count) smile.

Thanks, cfr, for the welcome and the advice. smile
This was my first post ever, on any forum. Its a bit more daunting starting a new thread than joining one already started, but that sounds appropriate here.

Just copy your existing one, then, as that was fine! (The edit button on the post will let you easily copy it, code tags and all.)

Oh, just add the info that it is fine if you boot to the command line. Otherwise people will just ask you again, I expect.

Re: [SOLVED] -Syu broke things. After booting my screen goes black

I have a problem in between the OP and rod

I can login to my machine through TTY, but if I try to start X I get a black screen with nothing going on. I have the exact same errors in the xorg log as the OP and confirm that this only started after I ran upgrades today. I have an intel hd 3000 graphics card.

I tried downgrading my kernel but can't boot because of upgrades to libgcrypt that I have to roll back (and who knows what else)

Poking in the dark here, but just to be sure, have you tried connecting a monitor or TV to your other display outputs? There may be a new bug in the display output selection code.

I only have a mini-HDMI port on my laptop and no mini-HDMI cord. Also my monitor works, I can see the text booting, and my computer doesn't boot into X, it boots into a tty with a text log in. It's the text log in when things go blank, not after starting X.

Same problem, also with a Zenbook Prime UX31A-DH71. I booted using the arch install media, chrooted, and downgraded to 3.9.9-1/rebuilt initrd.

Re: [SOLVED] -Syu broke things. After booting my screen goes black

To the OP, someone mentioned in another thread that the screen backlight was just off and could be turned on using Fn+F6 (though on mine, that turns up the screen brightness, it's Fn+F7 that toggles the screen backlight).

Why would you post this on a thread that has nothing to do with your problem?

Nah, my backlight is on, the screen is just black, not displaying anything.

Could you post a list of the kernel modules loaded (lsmod) after the screen goes blank?

Re: [SOLVED] -Syu broke things. After booting my screen goes black

Can you try switching temporarily to vesa (blacklisting the Intel KMS driver) and see if everything works in that case?

Blacklisting the `drm_kms_helper` module gets me in a little further. Honestly I'm not sure how to switch to the "vesa" module. I presume there's a longer name than that and I just have to `modprove vesa_module_name`?

For those who want to duplicate my results I created `/etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf` which has

install drm_kms_helper /bin/false

which is supposed to disable the module and all that depend on it.

I suppose you might try blacklisting i915. If the idea is to use vesa

EDIT: Note I'm not recommending you do this. I have no idea what effect that might have.

Adding i915 to the MODULES variable in /etc/mkinitcpio.conf and rebuilding the initrd worked for me.

EDIT: And then it stopped working with the next reboot. Had to roll back.

I'm not sure, but using 'nomodeset' in the kernel command line might disable KMS entirely and fallback to vesa. If vesa works, you should probably update to mesa-git and ask in the mesa mailing list for help in finding the regression.

Re: [SOLVED] -Syu broke things. After booting my screen goes black

So I'm using the nomodeset option and installed mesa-git. I can see my text log in but I can't startx. I unblacklisted the other modules we were trying as well. When I startx Xorg gives me a "no screens found" error.

There's also some error that I can't read on my first screen where all the modules are loading. I think it might contain the word "root" and then maybe might have something to do with display? What's this screen called so that I can google to find where the log is. Or where is the log?

Can you post your Xorg.0.log? It's located in /var/log

You might need to install extra/xf86-video-vesa and add the right 'device' section in xorg.conf, though I thought that last part was unnecessary.
