[Solved] Suspend to RAM problems with HP dv7 laptop

Hello,

I have an HP dv7-6000 notebook that I can't get suspend to RAM working on. When I tell Linux to suspend, the screen turns off, I hear the hard disk turn off, but all the lights stay on (power, wireless, and touchpad). After a couple minutes the BIOS kicks in and runs the fans at maximum speed. The only way to get out of this situation is to hold down the power button for a hard shutdown.

It's almost as if the suspend was successful, but "incomplete," because the system for whatever reason is stuck powered on.

I have updated the BIOS and there is no difference. I have also tried different acpi_os_name values based on my DSDT table ("Windows 2001," "Windows 2009," etc.).

Both pm-utils log files (pm-powersave.log and pm-suspend.log) are blank. I have also tried uswsusp, and the same thing happens. I have not tried hibernate yet because I don't have a swap partition.

Some additional hardware information:

Re: [Solved] Suspend to RAM problems with HP dv7 laptop

+1, I'm having the same issue with both "pm-suspend" and "sytemctl suspend", not always but happening 1 out of 5 times maybe, this started happening since the 3.10* upgrade, currently running 3.10.5-1 on my modest compaq.

Re: [Solved] Suspend to RAM problems with HP dv7 laptop

If you are running Xfce, there is an update to power management as well as systemd in the testing tree. It fixed the suspend issues I was having with my Acer laptop.

I have the same exact problem on my thinkpad x230, started with 3.10 kernel. Currently running 3.10.5-1.

To eliminate this, even though I have 8GB of RAM, I tried suspending after fresh boot. The fourth suspend hanged. So I dont think it is ram issue.

Unless the machine has a limitation of how much RAM is compatible with this laptop, I don't really see how this is relevant. This is definitely within the limitations of the dv7.

Also, I am not sure what a swap file or swap partition has to do with suspending to RAM...

Re: [Solved] Suspend to RAM problems with HP dv7 laptop

I have 6 GB of RAM in my laptop and 64-bit Arch.

I'm already running the latest systemd (206).

EDIT: The other day, suspend actually worked once! My odds of a successful suspend are more like 1/20.

Re: [Solved] Suspend to RAM problems with HP dv7 laptop

Yes! Finally found a working solution!

Taken from the Ubuntu Forums:

Create /etc/pm/sleep.d/20ehci_hcd with these contents:

#!/bin/sh
# see http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1979490
VERSION=1.1
DEV_LIST=/tmp/usb-dev-list
DRIVERS_DIR=/sys/bus/pci/drivers
DRIVERS="ehci xhci" # ehci_hcd, xhci_hcd
HEX="[[:xdigit:]]"
MAX_BIND_ATTEMPTS=2
BIND_WAIT=0.1

unbindDev() {
  echo -n > $DEV_LIST 2>/dev/null
  for driver in $DRIVERS; do
    DDIR=$DRIVERS_DIR/${driver}_hcd
    for dev in `ls $DDIR 2>/dev/null | egrep "^$HEX+:$HEX+:$HEX"`; do
      echo -n "$dev" > $DDIR/unbind
      echo "$driver $dev" >> $DEV_LIST
    done
  done
}

bindDev() {
  if [ -s $DEV_LIST ]; then
    while read driver dev; do
      DDIR=$DRIVERS_DIR/${driver}_hcd
      while [ $((MAX_BIND_ATTEMPTS)) -gt 0 ]; do
          echo -n "$dev" > $DDIR/bind
          if [ ! -L "$DDIR/$dev" ]; then
            sleep $BIND_WAIT
          else
            break
          fi
          MAX_BIND_ATTEMPTS=$((MAX_BIND_ATTEMPTS-1))
      done
    done < $DEV_LIST
  fi
  rm $DEV_LIST 2>/dev/null
}

case "$1" in
  hibernate|suspend) unbindDev;;
  resume|thaw)       bindDev;;
esac

For my dv7, I also had to install uswsusp-git from the AUR and then tell pm-utils to use it:
/etc/pm/config.d/uswsusp:

SLEEP_MODULE=uswsusp

After that you should be able to suspend properly with

pm-suspend

Hopefully this can help somebody else. smile

Re: [Solved] Suspend to RAM problems with HP dv7 laptop

Ammendum to the previous post. To integrate my solution with systemd (so that desktop power managers can suspend properly), I copied /usr/lib/systemd/system/systemd-suspend.service to /etc/systemd/system and replaced

ExecStart=/usr/lib/systemd/systemd-sleep suspend

with

ExecStart=/usr/bin/pm-suspend
