I have just updated and it does not work for me on the Lenovo Y500 with the 650M.

This is getting really annoying. I have to manually downgrade quite a few packages every time I test...

I apologize, I am using the GT 750M. I'm not sure why it doesn't work on the GT 650M. I did mess with my drivers so who knows. See my above post about having the two drivers at once.

Re: Lenovo IdeaPad Y500, Linux 3.10, NVidia driver crashes

Same annoying issue for me with nvidia Geforce GT 645M with Optimus technology.

I set up my laptop with bumblebee/bbswitch.

With up to date system (kernel 3.10.5 and nvidia 325.15), nvidia card fail to launch when I use optirun or primusrun, then after a moment fan goes max speed and laptop emit beeps like if something was heating too much, and then laptop will issue emergency shutdown.

Downgrading to kernel 3.9.9 and nvidia 319.32 for now.

Sorry, I didn't mean to direct my frustration to you. I'm just fed up with this issue (which apparently affects quite a lot of us) and the lack of info from NVidia.
I'm kind of starting to agree with Linus here tongue

They have a ticket in their internal bugtracker. To get this fixed quickly, it's probably best to keep -> this topic <- going with new info as we find it.

Check if booting with rcutree.rcu_idle_gp_delay=1 or running

sudo tee /sys/module/rcutree/parameters/rcu_idle_gp_delay <<<1

before loading the nvidia kernel module makes things better.

Re: Lenovo IdeaPad Y500, Linux 3.10, NVidia driver crashes

I have the "Failed to initialize the NVIDIA GPU at PCI:1:0:0" error when using optirun and primusrun but x and exerything else runs just fine on my ideapad Y580. I've got a backup running now, afterwords I'll rollback to the last kernal. Does the nvidia driver need to be rolled back as well? How do I find which driver I'm on?

Re: Lenovo IdeaPad Y500, Linux 3.10, NVidia driver crashes

I don't have optimus, as the Intel HD card on my Core i7 is not accessible by design.
You will probably also have to roll back to the previous nvidia driver, but I'm not absolutely sure (pacman will complain though).
You can find which version of a package you are using by typing

pacman -Qi <name of the package>

You will want to roll back to the following:

  • linux 3.9.9-1

  • linux-headers 3.9.9-1 (if you have this package)

  • nvidia 319.32-2

  • nvidia-utils 319.32-1

  • nvidia-libgl 319.32-1 (pacman does not complain if this is not downgraded, but X won't work!)

This is the situation that works for me.

You do not need to revert the nvidia driver. I am currently running 325.15 on kernel 3.9 on the affected machine without issue. This does require a tweak to the nvidia PKGBUILD, however, so you'll need to copy the build stuff out of ABS and go from there.

Just booted with this and GPU is still falling off the bus. In addition, dmesg is getting flooded with

So I was wrong about it working with the GeForce GT 700M card. After a fresh install, it reports the same issues that everyone else is having.

I have also tried the testing version released today and it also doesn't work. This is getting extremely old extremely fast. I can't have a computer than won't function because NVIDIA  refuses to release the source code and can't figure out how to release a driver for Linux.

Another nvidia driver update and no fix. The problem persists at least for me on 325.15-2.

We are going to have to wait for NVIDIA to update the driver. Given their response time, it may be another week or two.

This is also happening to me with a Lenovo Y500 GT750m. The computer boots up, but then immediately shuts down after the fan runs on max and the screen goes black. How could I downgrade the affected packages before my computer auto shuts down?

Re: Lenovo IdeaPad Y500, Linux 3.10, NVidia driver crashes

If you have not cleared your package cache, you can find the packages in /var/cache/pacman/pkg .
You can install them using # pacman -U <package-filenames> .
Check my previous post for the packages and version numbers you'll want.

If any of the packages is not in your cache, you can build them yourself using old PKGBUILD files or have someone upload them somewhere for you.

Disable your display manager; it is probably X loading the display driver that uses the kernel module causing the hard lockup.
Or you can boot into recovery mode.

It's part of using a bleeding-edge Linux distribution. This kind of stuff happens sometimes, and in fact happens much more often with in-tree drivers than nvidia's drivers (looking at you, ath*k).

The driver works fine on many configurations -- it just seems some laptops don't play nicely when the new driver and the new kernel are put together. While it is disappointing that nvidia has let this issue float so long, it's not necessarily a gross oversight.

Ubuntu users are not having this problem. If you can't work around it yourself without major inconvenience, perhaps it's time to consider a distro with a more conventional release philosophy.

Re: Lenovo IdeaPad Y500, Linux 3.10, NVidia driver crashes

There is no reason to take drastic measures.
These things happen, and that's annoying, but we all seem to have working systems (be it with older versions of software).

The reason why this is annoying for me is because we get no information at all from Nvidia (not even whether they know what is causing this problem), and unlike your average open source software, there is no way for us to track progress on this issue or fix it ourselves.
I would gladly switch to nouveau but, as stated on their project website, 3D performance on Kepler cards is low right now.

I can work around it just fine, that isn't the issue. The issue is with NVIDIA not doing anything to fix the driver and not letting the community have the source so we can do it. This isn't an issue with Arch or their philosophy; this is an issue with NVIDIA and their philosophy.

This worked for me as well on my Y510p with GT 750M SLI. However, I can only get X running if I use both cards. With the ultrabay card removed, the built-in card doesn't detect a display device (I've also tried all manner of manual Xorg configuration to force it to connect to a display, etc). Anyone have an idea why this might be? I was initially suspecting a driver issue, but it seems more like the hardware since the 319.32 drivers work perfectly fine once I insert the second card. I initially thought I had Optimus for this reason (spent a long time down that rabbit hole).

Just seen that nvidia-325.15-3 has been pushed along with linux-3.10.7.

Hopefully nvidia have finally fixed this as I've been having the same issue on my Y500 with GT650 since late july.  I had  switched to nouveau which was giving me issues with audio out over hdmi.  Sort your act out nVidia

Not working still. Does not hang my graphics card like the 325.15-2 version, but rather doesn't detect the card (even with the BusID option). Same Xorg log as OP.

Hi,

could one of you upload the needed packages to rollback to 3.9 on some file hosting, I don't have them on my laptop... Quoting TBoshoven, I would need :
linux 3.9.9-1
linux-headers 3.9.9-1
nvidia 319.32-2
nvidia-utils 319.32-1
nvidia-libgl 319.32-1

I thanks you very very much !

I wouldn't mind uploading them for you, but I don't think I'm exactly trusted.
It's probably better to build them from AUR.
Just boot your computer (do not load X of course), and use makepkg to rebuild the old packages.

See this guide:
