Re: Lenovo IdeaPad Y500, Linux 3.10, NVidia driver crashes

You should probably follow TBoshoven 's hint and build them on your own. However, I just uploaded the x86_64 components on Zippyshare, if you trust me enough you may use them.

Re: Lenovo IdeaPad Y500, Linux 3.10, NVidia driver crashes

@TBoshoven : Yeah you're right, I am rebuilding the kernel while idling away :-) Thanks for the pointers
@alexpe87 : Thanks you very much !! You're quite tempting, I'm not sure I'll wait for the kernel to build...
@drog : the arm repo was closed two days ago, and that's a sad thing :-(

Re: Lenovo IdeaPad Y500, Linux 3.10, NVidia driver crashes

A new NVIDIA driver has hit their site. 319.49

Can anyone build this and test it? I am currently on a Winblowz machine and am not able to do it yet.

EDIT: This is odd because the build number is lower than the current one, but the release date is listed as today...

Do you happen to have the kernel log? Has it changed?

Sorry, don't have the kernel log and have since reverted. Right now I don't have time to try again.

325.15-5 has also hit testing. If anyone could try either this or the new driver on the NVIDIA site and report back that would be great!

I Also have the same issue with nvidia driver on a Razer Blade Pro. I am using kernel 3.10.7-1 and nvidia driver 325.15-3.
GPU is GTX 765M.

I tested with 325.15-4 from testing, (couldn't find *-5, as mentioned by colinazzam, am I missing something?) on a Lenovo Y500 with 2x nvidia 650m.

Sadly, I get the same black screen and fans on max like with all previous versions of the driver.

No, you are not missing anything. I put the wrong number. At least we know what won't work either.

Has anyone tried manually installing the driver here: http://www.geforce.com/drivers/results/65162 ? It has the latest date but the build number is lower. I think it is worth a shot.

Yes, the 319.49 version works for me (GT 750Mx2), though still only with both cards. Anyone else seen this behavior? The driver won't detect a display or output device/port without the second (ultrabay) card inserted. Works perfectly fine otherwise.

Also, isn't the 319 series the stable release, with 325 in beta? If so, should we be surprised if the beta driver doesn't work?

EDIT: Forgot to note that this is on the 3.9.9-1 kernel.

I am assuming that the 319 driver doesn't work on 3.10 then?

That is correct. Tried kernel 3.10-9 and did not work.

Re: Lenovo IdeaPad Y500, Linux 3.10, NVidia driver crashes

Although not exactly the same issue, this may explain what's causing the driver to fail on 3.10. Supposedly it might be fixed in "LfW" 3.11, will probably test that myself in a couple days.

MorphBoneHunter's post on the GitHub issue you linked to seems to indicate that this is a different problem, because the issue in that thread started in Linux 3.8.x, whereas this issue really only surfaced in Linux 3.10.

Right but the later comments have the falling off the bus error in 3.10. Didn't really read the entire first half since, yes, it was a completely different issue then.

Re: Lenovo IdeaPad Y500, Linux 3.10, NVidia driver crashes

I followed the patch method provided in this post, reply #27 by Korrode:
http://forum.manjaro.org/index.php?topi … 9#msg54059

Then i updated grub, rebooted  now the nvidia driver works, CUDA, Steam, everything. It is a fast workaround meawhile the real fix comes.

Re: Lenovo IdeaPad Y500, Linux 3.10, NVidia driver crashes

I'm having problems understanding this method.
It looks like they are using a patched version of Linux 3.9 to fix bbswitch, but this problem only started in Linux 3.10 .
I don't see a manual patch there; only binary packages which seem to contain Linux 3.9 .
Are you sure you are running a working Linux 3.10?

Otherwise, a better workaround (no untrusted binary packages) for this specific issue is just to keep using Linux 3.9 .

EDIT: Since part of the thread was split off and binned, to summarize: the solution worked because it was Linux 3.9 as I suspected.

Re: Lenovo IdeaPad Y500, Linux 3.10, NVidia driver crashes

Yes, I didn't quite see why the method in the manjaro forums would be considered a workaround as it was simply a patched 3.9 kernel. Since nobody that are suffering from this issue seem to be having a problem with the 3.9 kernel, it would seem unnecessary to do this in the first place.

Re: Lenovo IdeaPad Y500, Linux 3.10, NVidia driver crashes

Just tried to compile the driver on 3.11RC7; doesn't work due to an undefined variable in the kernel headers that the driver needs. Since Nvidia don't support pre-release kernels, we may just have to wait for the release. I am typing this on 3.9 btw; for some reason nvidia-smi hangs X and cooks up the CPU pretty good after waking on 3.10, in addition to falling off the bus.

They don't support them, but there are usually patches floating around on https://devtalk.nvidia.com/default/board/98/ .
There seems to be a patch for 325.08 on Linux 3.11rc1 in https://devtalk.nvidia.com/default/topi … atibility/. It might still work.

Re: Lenovo IdeaPad Y500, Linux 3.10, NVidia driver crashes

Just updated and optirun works now however primus is still broken.

$ primusrun glxspheres
primus: fatal: Bumblebee daemon reported: error: [XORG] (EE) Server terminated successfully (0). Closing log file.

I don't know if this is related or seperate.

Y580, GTX660M

Edit: Okay, this is odd... It worked once and then I got an error so I tried a reboot and I'm back to the PCI error. Optirun ran and glxspheres said it was with my Nvidia card, speeds were great and everything. I feel crazy.

Updated and it works too. Important packages were:

- Linux Kernel 3.10.10
- Nvidia driver 325.15-5

I also noticed that Optirun/Primusrun sometimes fails.

Re: Lenovo IdeaPad Y500, Linux 3.10, NVidia driver crashes

I doubt this issue is actually fixed. It seems the Optimus thing is not exactly the same.
I have not had time to test for myself yet, but on the NVIDIA support topic it was mentioned on 21-8-2013 that they were able to reproduce this issue in-house, while driver 325.15 was released on 5-8-2013 (more than two weeks prior).
I'm assuming they also used 325.15 for in-house testing, so the earliest fixed version would be the next one.

If it turns out differently, and the exact bug in the first post stops occurring after the update, please let us know.
