Ndiswrapper problems with the initrd kernel

I'm using ndiswrapper version 1.7 with a Linksys WUSB54G USB wireless adapter.  With the previous kernel, it worked flawlessly.  However, when I upgraded to the new initrd-based kernel, I recompiled ndiswrapper for the new kernel, and it had problems.  The network will start properly on boot, and it will work for about 10-20 minutes, at which point the computer will freeze.  I ran "mkinitrd auto" before rebooting after recompiling ndiswrapper, but it made no difference.  Any thoughts?

I personally haven't experienced this yet, but this is a very typical ndiswrapper problem - it seems like every three releases they throw in some code that causes it to freeze.  1.4 did the same thing.

Currently, 1.7 is in [testing]  I have not experienced the freeze you mention, but I should point out that the inf format changed.  You should uninstall and reinstall your windows drivers - see if that helps.

Please let me know either way, as I can always downgrade it to a working version.

Thanks

Ok, I did not uninstall and reinstall my INF driver file.  I'll see if that does it.  If not, would you recommend moving down to 1.6?  Did that version work for you?

Actually, the 1.6->1.7 release was pretty quick, so I missed it - last working version I used was 1.5

Re: Ndiswrapper problems with the initrd kernel

I went ahead and downgraded to 1.6, and it looks like that did the trick.  If for some reason it starts acting up again, I'll move down to 1.5.  Thanks for the help.

Re: Ndiswrapper problems with the initrd kernel

Ok, so I downgraded to 1.5 because 1.6 did the same thing.  I made sure that I reinstalled my INF driver, and ran "mkinitrd auto" and then rebooted.  After about 10-15 minutes, it still freezes.  I use KDE as my default desktop environment, so I tried using Gnome, thinking maybe there was a compatibility issue with the kdenetwork interface, but Gnome freezes it too.  I'm pretty much at a loss for ideas at this point, beyond the thought that maybe ndiswrapper isn't compatible with the initrd kernel method.

Re: Ndiswrapper problems with the initrd kernel

Is there any solution, or do I just need to wait until there's a new ndiswrapper or kernel release?

Hmm, 1.5 freezes for you as well?  1.5 ran very well for me for a long time...  I still haven't noticed any problems with 1.7, but I'll check and recheck and stress test it before doing anything with it in [testing].

Anyone else using ndiswrapper, please try ndiswrapper in [testing] and let me know how it works.

I didn't know there was an ndiswrapper release in pacman repositories.  I'll pacman that and give it a shot.

Re: Ndiswrapper problems with the initrd kernel

If you have a huge flame retardent suit, you could probably hit up the ndiswrapper channel on freenode.  The handful of guys there who actually develop this are the type of people who can't even begin to speculate... so if you don't have a full 32 megs of debug output, core dump, and backtrace, they treat you like you're some fat kid with leprosy....

Re: Ndiswrapper problems with the initrd kernel

Isnt there a native driver for that card?

I'm sure it uses the amtel usb driver, which punkrockguy used to have in his TU repo. Prolly in aur now.

Re: Ndiswrapper problems with the initrd kernel

There might be, but I'm not too worried about it at the moment as my motherboard just died last night, and the computer I was using it with was a temporary machine while my laptop is in the shop.  So, I'll just wait a few days until my lappie is back, and mess with my laptop, since it's built-in wireless.

Re: Ndiswrapper problems with the initrd kernel

I looked into the possibility of a native driver, and discovered that the rt2x00 project makes a native driver for my adapter's chipset, but does not currently support the USB version of the chipset.
