Re: Lenovo IdeaPad Y500, Linux 3.10, NVidia driver crashes

Hey,

Seems that for people using bumbelbee the problem is solved with 325-15-4...

But for me, whithout bumbelbee it's not the case...

What's the best thing to do ? Waiting for the next update or trying with bumbelbee, bbswicth and so on ?

Re: Lenovo IdeaPad Y500, Linux 3.10, NVidia driver crashes

I am waiting for the next NVIDIA driver release.
Linux 3.9 is usable, and I'm not having too many package conflicts because of this.
It also seems NVIDIA is working on fixing the issue, so there's a good probability that in the next release this will be fixed.

It is still the 325.15 driver. The -4 and -5, which is the current now, is the build number, and the binary package in the repo must be rebuilt for each new kernel version. Most likely it is just the new kernel version that works better with bumblebee. I don't think the rest of us can expect a fix until nvidia release a new driver. Although, if the 3.11 kernel comes out before a new driver from nvidia, then I will certainly give it a try as well.

Re: Lenovo IdeaPad Y500, Linux 3.10, NVidia driver crashes

You're right!
It works on Linux 3.11 .

I took the following packages from testing:
linux
linux-headers
nvidia

Installed them, ignoring dependency issues, upgraded all other packages (not testing) and X starts!

EDIT: Answered my own question.

Someone who is registered on the NVIDIA site may wish to share this information so others know as well as the NVIDIA devs.

Re: Lenovo IdeaPad Y500, Linux 3.10, NVidia driver crashes

I'm using a Lenovo Y500 laptop with a Geforce GT650M graphics card.
If you want a really clean install, I suggest you wait a few days until the new kernel is out of testing, so you're not stuck with dependencies (although I'm honestly having no problems there).

Re: Lenovo IdeaPad Y500, Linux 3.10, NVidia driver crashes

I don't mind running a testing system for a week or two. I am really sick to death of Windows 8. I also think it may take at least a week before 3.11 hits the stable repos.

Could you please post back if you come across any errors or problems?

I've just played a bit of Minecraft, and performance is good.
No errors so far.

Re: Lenovo IdeaPad Y500, Linux 3.10, NVidia driver crashes

It was a bit premature to report this error as fixed on Nvidia-Forums. I'm glad the issue is resolved for you, but it still persists on my machine (Thinkpad W530 + Quadro K2000M). Namely, when trying to run anything on discrete GPU with Bumblebee, I get the exact same error plus a lot of ACPI argument mismatch warnings. That is, with kernel, drivers and bbswitch built from Arch SVN trunk.

Re: Lenovo IdeaPad Y500, Linux 3.10, NVidia driver crashes

I'm also using a W530 + Quadro K2000M with the same problems. My preference is to set this laptop up as discrete graphics only, but I cannot make any combination work except the Nouveau drivers and video set to discrete. I've been using a dock with 2 external monitors though.

grey.kinglet: I'm sorry if it still does not work for you, but the problem in this topic is gone.
Note that the topic here mentions Lenovo Y500.
Bumblebee seems to be a different problem.

I will post a message on the NVIDIA forum topic for you, indicating your problem.

Re: Lenovo IdeaPad Y500, Linux 3.10, NVidia driver crashes

I'm using Lenovo y500 with two GT650's in SLI. Updated to Linux 3.11 from testing today and switched to nVidia driver again (pacman -Syu; pacman -R xf86-video-nouveau nouveau-dri; pacman -S nvidia nvidia-libgl nvidia-utils), but problem still persists, fans blow like crazy and nothing shows up on screen.

I think he is right. Unfortunately this thread started mixing too many different issues. The NVIDIA forum was the exact same issue. Thus he wasn't premature at all. It may be best to create a separate forum post for bumblebee issues.

Updated to 3.11 and all the nvidia stuff from testing and now the graphics works as they should.

Re: Lenovo IdeaPad Y500, Linux 3.10, NVidia driver crashes

With a fresh install on a Lenovo Y500 with a single GT750M graphics card, X fails to load the first time, but loads the second time.

Essentially, I cannot have a login manager load since it will fail. Instead, I have disabled it, and I run startx to fail, then systemctl start kdm (I could also just run startx a second time)

In any case, it is good to be back on Linux, especially Arch, and this is a minor inconvenience. I hope that this gets resolved with a new driver though!

Re: Lenovo IdeaPad Y500, Linux 3.10, NVidia driver crashes

Turns out I was actually a bit premature on this.
After working without problems for a day or two, today the problem occurred again.
It did so for a few times.
I tried reverting yesterday's updates (virtualbox), but it did not help.
So I updated back and suddenly it works.
Could this be a timing issue? Maybe having to do with systemd doing all kind of stuff in the background?

EDIT: I did not think about this, but my laptop was on battery today, and not before. Seems more likely to be an ACPI issue...

I am not sure what the problem is either. We seem to have very similar issues. I have noticed that I cannot enable a login manager because X always fails the first time. However, it always starts the second time. Someone said the exact same thing earlier.

I don't have a solution, but my work around has been to simply login, startx and let it fail, then systemctl start kdm. Just having X on 3.11 is good enough for me right now.

With that said, everything else seems to work fine. Brightness controls, suspend, resume, etc.

Re: Lenovo IdeaPad Y500, Linux 3.10, NVidia driver crashes

I can't let X fail.
When it does, my system turns off.

I don't use a graphical login manager; I always start X using startx .

Re: Lenovo IdeaPad Y500, Linux 3.10, NVidia driver crashes

Problem still persists here on Y510p with GT750M SLI. Won't detect display for card #1, but if I force X to use card #2 it detects displays but does not find a configuration to use.

EDIT: Does not work in SLI mode, but does work with the 2nd card removed. On the Y510p, with the second card removed, Optimus is enabled and therefore must be run with bumblebee/bbswitch.

Hey all wink

Solved for me, activating testing repo and deactivating others repo, just doing an

pacman -Sy linux linux-headers nvidia

and then back to normal repo wink

Re: Lenovo IdeaPad Y500, Linux 3.10, NVidia driver crashes

I don't know what is going on.
Two days ago, things seemed to be working ccorrectly, but starting yesterday, the issue is back.
And I did not do any notable updates in the meantime.

I'm using a Lenovo Ideapad Y500 with single GT650m graphics card.

I thought it might be a power savings thing, because my computer was not plugged in the last time it occurred, but today it was.

Also, it seems to work after a number of tries. Hard to predict when it does.

Re: Lenovo IdeaPad Y500, Linux 3.10, NVidia driver crashes

This may sound crazy but so far, it worked every time I ran updates before starting X.
Probably has nothing to do with the updates, and more with the fact that X is started a minute later than normal, but give it a try if you can't start your system.
