Re: Anyone using Reiser4?

I have been using it for a few years now. Never had a single problem... and it does not have to scan your HDD every 32nd boot, like ext does wink

Re: Anyone using Reiser4?

Ext3 doesn't have to. You can disable that with tune2fs -c0 -i0 /dev/sdXY.

Re: Anyone using Reiser4?

Just a question from a FS noob, but why would ReiserFS or Reiser4 need any more updates? Are there any outstanding bugs or issues?

@Aprz: Yeah, but what if something happens? Kernel X.Y comes out and needs big changes to Reiser4 to work, but no one is experienced enough with it? Bug? Security problem?

@elmer_42: See above. ReiserFS has had some stability problems (never seen any myself, I think it's the normal amount for any FS), I think more the problem is the worry that if something does crop up, you may be hosed.

Until then, it should be all good for minor details. If something big does come out, an enthusiast such as myself would probably take the time to make it so we wouldn't have to use second rate stuff. I know there is a bunch out there and I am sure we would share it just like with any FOSS out there.

Oh, OK. I get it now. Why doesn't a small, dedicated community of ResierFS fans take over the development?

That would be sort of neat. big_smile I expect something like that has already happened, but probably not very well organized yet or perhaps it is so small and unnoticeable that people don't know about that community existing yet. Maybe a more interesting thought is that there is a bunch of communities out there working on it and Reiser4 will split off into several different filesystems with Reiser4 just being the foundaton of it, sort of like DWM branching off into a bunch of different tiling managers.

Re: Anyone using Reiser4?

The Reiser filesystems, as I understand, are very innovative and different from the rest. That's probably why they haven't had many outside contributers. In any case, it's definitely not a good situation when the core development group that did 97% of the work on a project that goes into the kernel disappears practically overnight. We're talking about the kernel - the one piece of code everyone using Linux has, obviously - I understand why the Linux dev team is very cautious about adding Reiser4, especially when Hans's company started working on Reiser4 after ReiserFS and did very little addressing of some odd problems with ReiserFS (again, AFAIK). I love Reiser4, but even if it were added to the kernel, it should be default off with many warnings about its usage.

As for the kernel, hasn't Andrew Morton been maintaining and keeping that up-to-date with his mm line?

Heh, I do have a problem with Reiser4, which is I use eINIT for booting instead of SysVInit, and Reiser4 complains a lot when I boot because eINIT doesn't shutdown properly and the project has been abandon in favor of Kyuba, which isn't available yet.

Re: Anyone using Reiser4?

The new kernel 3.10 has been newly featured with reiser4 FS support. What are the consequences for optimal partitions' FS (for instance /var)? Wiki for reiser4 should be updated as well IMHO...

It's a wiki, you can edit it yourself :-)

From what I can tell, reiserfs4 is still an out-of-tree patchset. https://reiser4.wiki.kernel.org/index.php/Main_Page
You made it sound like it was accepted into mainline :-)

no reason to ditch ext4.

ext4 is only going to get better with more patches and more speed improvements, and Rieser4 will never catch up

We tend to treat non-support threads with a little more latitude.  We don't like necrobumps on support threads because things change so fast and 'new' solutions mixed with 'old' solutions muddy the waters and confuse things.  Discussion threads, not so much.

A 5 year old thread might be stretching the bounds of "little more latitude." But honestly, I like that some actual thought went into making forum policies.

rufus, as has been mentioned in other threads, please think before posting. This contributes nothing to the discussion, especially a 5 year old thread.

Re: Anyone using Reiser4?

I use ZFS on my desktop and server. Arch Linux of course. It has compression as well. I trust ZFS more than many other filesystems. Also find my system seems faster too.

But it is always good to know, that I will never have to scroll up further than three posts to see a "Reiser4 will kill your family" post. It's one of the constants in this universe of variables.

I think Arch is using Reiser3, but I have seemed to notice that Reiser is more efficient on storage block usage.

Im planning to move my /var onto a reiser4 for speed and compression mainly but have also thought about migrating my root and home partitions too it also, though i have conserns about the stability of the file system in general, so im wondering if anyone is uing reiser4 with the arch system.

Use Reiser 3 for /var, Shirley? Why Reiser 4?

I was "uing" Reiser 4 under Gentoo a few years ago.  With my spinning disks it was remarkably quiet in disk activity with impressive performance.  One day  my system would not boot, and I eventually discovered  that many of my OS files were filled with ASCII zero bytes.

Since then I have used only ext4 and reiserfs. I would not trust any immature file system, including BTRFS, for a reliable workable system.

In the past I would have murdered to be able to use Reiser 4 in dead earnest, but now ZFS looks like the way to go.

Re: Anyone using Reiser4?

I read that resently Debian stop shipping reiser3 and ubuntu think that too, maybe the dead of reiserfs-s is near??

anyway I never test reiser4

Well, I suppose that this is somekind of signature, no?

Re: Anyone using Reiser4?

I actually used reiserfs once at work. That was the day the Arch bbs taught me all I need to know about journals and inodes.

What can I say? It still runs and does its job. Although I don't work there anymore, my former boss tends to keep me posted on which of my projects turned out to be toast and which ones still run like a charm. That reiser partition has to suffer millions of small files being read and written chaotically every second. I didn't even have to think much about the size of the journal or whether to put it on a seperate disk and now the system is way more performant in this specific scenario than before with ext3.
