Anyway, I don't see suspicious messages in your log.
The warnings you see are harmless, as graysky noted.

So, to summarize:

- The mem= option has no effect.
- Increasing the number of active cores, increases the problem.
- It happens on both radeon & catalyst.
- The AMD turbo mode is fatal
- The "crash" is actually an "instantaneus reboot", so a triple fault

I'm starting to suspect also some sort of hw problem, but I assume you have windows installed, an windows doesn't show any problem -- right?
(just for sure, I'd give a memtest run anyway)

I missed this one:

I can't tell if it is related, never seen this message before.

Can you verify if cpu intensive tasks have problems? (you can use the cpuburn utility)

Re: CPU Cores missing on lscpu - SOLVED get better power supply.

When i run virtual machines, uses up cpu cores just fine, lscu jumps up from 1400mhz to 3100mhz  so I assume throttling and heavy use is fine.
Virtual machines run without problems and main machine does not even hiccup.

Re: CPU Cores missing on lscpu - SOLVED get better power supply.

I have been using asus for years as well, always loved them but they are not friendly on the phone or on support chat if you mention linux, immediatly they want to get rid of you.

Just got off the phone with Asus, they sell laptops with linux and claim to have the worlds best selling boards, you would think they would support them in the linux world. The support guys I talked to said they had 4 guys there for linux and only support basic things like wi-fi because to use their words "our support team has a very limited knowledge of linux." Unbelievable!

For goodness sake, linux is the most used os on the planet but they guy said "becuase it is a free operating system, we don't support it, linux don't even support linux. It's just not used that much." I told him hogwash, linux is the most widly use os on the planet, even in your microwave oven and has the largest helpful support groups around, (this forum is one of them). He had no reply other than linux may not be compatible, he has no way of knowing and nobody else there would either.

There has to be a way around this, I just can't believe a motherboard company with such a good history is not compatible with linux.

Re: CPU Cores missing on lscpu - SOLVED get better power supply.

apex, I think the only short-term solution at this point is to run with KMS disabled:
radeon.modeset=0
As side effect, you'll loose any sort of video acceleration.
Let me know if this helps for now.

Re: CPU Cores missing on lscpu - SOLVED get better power supply.

put radeon.modeset=0 in grub.
system starts to load then just before kdm loads, just blinking curser, have to ctl alt f1 to login terminal then reset grub and restart.

That's strange. I checked on my system before giving you the advice; the vesa driver is used if KMS is disabled... hmm

Re: CPU Cores missing on lscpu - SOLVED get better power supply.

When compiling or doing cpu intensive work I discovered arch is not using all the cpu cores.

I've had this happen to my ASUS M5A99X EVO and it turned out that I had somehow set the BIOS Ai Tweaker > Ai Overclock Tuner flag incorrectly to Manual instead of Automatic while the TPU switch was in the Enable position.

Re: CPU Cores missing on lscpu - SOLVED get better power supply.

ilsensine, what does that imply other than my vesa driver does not work?

KairiTech, thanks for the post.

UPDATE - Shutting off 4 of the 8 cores via bios does same good performance as shutting of via grub.

Spoke with my hardware vendor, suggestion was to try a better power supply.
I seen odd problems before with quirky supplies so I can't argue with him till I try it.

Don't know for sure. Maybe you have some X configuration file explicitly setting the video driver. Check /etc/X11/xorg.conf or the files in /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d. Also the X logfile (/var/log/X.0.log for the current boot, /var/log/X.0.log.old for the last boot) could give you some clue on the reason why the vesa driver doesn't take over.
For example on my PC I observe the following when started with modeset=0:

(various messages from Radeon driver...)
(II) [KMS] drm report modesetting isn't supported.
(...)
(II) UnloadModule: "radeon"
(...)
(II) VESA(0): initializing int10
(...)
(II) VESA(0): Setting up VESA Mode 0x123 (1024x768)

Spoke with my hardware vendor, suggestion was to try a better power supply.

It could be. But if it is the case, you should also observe random misbehaviour with other workloads exercising the video engine, or also under windows (if you have windows installed).

Re: CPU Cores missing on lscpu - SOLVED get better power supply.

ilsensine,
Thanks will check the logs, since this is a video problem and not just cpu, great idea.

Windows? That is a four letter word in my camp!
Seriously though, yes had windows on this box long time ago, worked fine with video.
Going to try and run some analysis software on the hardware and see if anything else pops up.

Re: CPU Cores missing on lscpu - SOLVED get better power supply.

Installed new more powerful power supply, system runs smooth.
Can run multiple video / flash   in dual screens simultanously with no problems.

Lesson RE-learned:
Make sure your hardware meets specs., the radeon standard specs are provided with at least 550 watts.

This is embarrassing, should have known better, my apologies for wasting people's time here. When I had my computer repair shops, this is one of the first things I would check.  Had a rolls royce vehicle with a motorcycle gas tank, like that makes sense.  That being said, learn the lesson I failed to remember and save yourself some trouble.
