[solved] system fails to boot after upgrade

Hi!

I just ran a system upgrade via pacman -Syu. Pacman hung during installing the latest kernel (I guess it was 3.11.2-1-ARCH) for a longer time. As I did not know anything better to do I cancelled pacman with CTRL+C. I assumed that the pacman run that I cancelled would have been rolled back. However, the next run of pacman only installed the packages that were missing from the last run. At this point I made the fatal error to reboot. ;-) Now the boot tells me that it cannot find /lib/modules/3.11.2-1-ARCH/modules.devname and fails to mount my encrypted root partition. It falls back to recovery shell which is more or less useless.

My idea to rescue the system is to use the installation live-image, decrypt the partition and then repair the mess. Does this sound like a valid approach? And if yes - do you have any suggestions what needs to be done? I guess that force-installing (if that is possible) the linux kernel package from pacman could be a good starting point.

Any hints or help would be appreciated!!

Don't force any package, try regular update first.
I'm not sure if it's related to https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?pid=1330705 , but the symptoms are the same.

Unless you run a custom kernel; using arch-chroot from the rescue environment and then reinstalling the kernel `pacman -S linux` sounds like a good start indeed.
