[SOLVED] AWN died

I've held off posting for a couple of days whilst I searched, but I'm finding nada.

At some point in the past couple of days, awn has stopped working with:

** (avant-window-navigator:20529): CRITICAL **: desktop_agnostic_config_schema_get_metadata_option: assertion 'self != NULL' failed
Segmentation fault (core dumped)

Now, I've had kernel updates, gtk2 & 3 and glib, but rolling them all back doesn't help. Does anyone have any idea what this may relate to?

Using testing, for information.

Re: [SOLVED] AWN died

Same issue here as of latest update...

$ avant-window-navigator

I erased the ~/.config/awn directory, no change.

Re: [SOLVED] AWN died

I gave up and eventually installed cairo-dock (it was fortuitous that the lastest fglrx fixed cairo-dock probems), spent an hour reconfiguring to have it look and behave more like my awn config did and added my custom launchers, and things are now almost indistinguisable. And I have a cute little penguin meandering around the dock, too smile

I'm also seeing the same issue. Anyone know what's going on, or have tips on diagnosing the issue?

After update to gnome 3.10:

Re: [SOLVED] AWN died

AWN was was dropped from the official repos today because of incompatibilities with the new gnome packages and deps.  It was on the mailing list.

Found it:

Hi,

I'll drop the following packages from the [community] repository,
because Avant Window Navigator no longer works with GNOME 3.10
(crashes on startup), upstream is dead, and I can't fix it:
- avant-window-navigator
- awn-extras-applets
- gnome-menus2
- libdesktop-agnostic

If anyone interested in fixing this problem, then check the related bug report:
https://bugs.archlinux.org/task/37226

Recommended alternatives are cairo-dock and docky.

Re: [SOLVED] AWN died

In my opinion gnome-shell without AWN is annoying, but the last version is released on 2010-04-11. The projetct appears dead.

Re: [SOLVED] AWN died

Yes, too sad AWN is dead.
I found docky[1] an acceptable replacement. Though, I didn't had any plugins in use.
Only thing I was annoyed was that anchor icon for the settings dialoge. But you can get rid of it. (e. g. see https://insideloss.wordpress.com/2013/0 … om-docky/)
And well,  it uses mono if that's a point to you...

Re: [SOLVED] AWN died

Or cairo-dock; again pretty useless without cairo-dock-plugins and a lot more fiddling about than the obviously defunct awn sad

Awn is dead on my openbox (before today's ob update) - whether this is directly related to the g3 libraries I have for various bits - who knows :$

Anyone actually tried building it from source? <--- scratch that the msg in WonderWoofy's post makes that obvious sad

Re: [SOLVED] AWN died

Just tried to install it with avant-window-navigator-bzr package from the AUR and it did not help either.

I still get

** (avant-window-navigator:11061): CRITICAL **: desktop_agnostic_config_schema_get_metadata_option: assertion 'self != NULL' failed

when trying to start AWN.

Re: [SOLVED] AWN died

@tuvistavie, this project has not been developed for several years  (as already mentioned above), so using the bzr sources is not going to change the fact that it is broken and no one is ding anythign to fix it.

Re: [SOLVED] AWN died

So what are we doing next? What dock is there that we can use that has a tray and can be a full replacement for panel&tray&taskmanager?
Cairo dock's handling of tray is just way to clumsy..

I agree, though if you detach the cairo tray from teh dockbar and use it as a desklet it becomes more usable.

Re: [SOLVED] AWN died

Guys, if you are using Docky instead of AWN now and if you are annoyed (like me) with the constantly visible anchor icon do the following to get rid of it:

gconftool-2 --type bool --set /apps/docky-2/Docky/Items/DockyItem/ShowDockyItem false

Re: [SOLVED] AWN died

AWN crashes with the new glib, it runs with 2.36.4.
This has to be something easily fixable, and probably it's either in awn itself or libdesktop-agnostic, which it uses. I'm currently trying to build libdesktop-agnostic with different settings.

I'll post if I find a fix.

Re: [SOLVED] AWN died

OK, I found the place where the crash occurs, it's in libdesktop-agnostic (in config-client.c). The assertions mean some variables are 0, and then they are dereferenced, hence the crash.
I have no idea how this library works, but I'll poke around in it and see why this happens. It's most likely due to some change in glib2.
I'll keep playing tomorrow.

satanselbow: Audacity doesn't crash for me with the latest glib2. Does downgrading glib2 fix this for you? This would be probably a bug in wxwidgets, since Audacity uses that (and wx in turn uses gtk).

No - AWN is dead but Audacity still starts with no problem, here.

Just to confirm: Audacity crash is ffmpeg related... tried to blame G3 but failed abysmally sad
