OK, now I'm just pissed off....

I had wireless working for about 4 hours.  I worked on a few other things (acpi, installed Xorg, etc...) I rebooted several times during the process....  Never touched anything network related.

And it doesn't work anymore.

I can apply all the attributes I want with iwconfig.  My card will not connect to the ap anymore.  Signal level is 0 nbo matter what I do.

If I reboot into Windows or Gentoo, everything works fine.

Is there an actual question in this post? or perhaps some hidden information I'm not aware of?

Really the only difference is this.

In Arch, everything SEEMS to go according to plan.  The args are applied to the wlan0 defice by iwconfig.  I can run iwconfig with no args, and it'll show me so.  But link is 0.  It fails to commence communicating with the AP for no aparent reason.  No errors, no dmesg output, nothing.

Run the exact same script in Gentoo, everything is working.

(note, no snide remarks about "are the right modules loading" are needed.  There wouldn't be a wlan0 device if they weren't.  For the record, orinoco_cs; the very same that is loaded to support it in ever other distro on the face of the earth)

Arch impressed me on my desktop...  But this is dismal.  I've tried to blame myself for 2 days now.  I'm not doing anything wrong.  Something is broken.

I've even completely re-installed from scratch.  Nada.  I beginning to think the fact that it worked for a few hours was the error.  It's pure insanity.

Wireless works great here, and I'd be willing to help, but you're going to have to provide some info here:
Mainly, what module does your card use?  Does dmesg report anything when you load/unload the module?

orinoco_cs is the module, and it loads and unloads exactly as one would expect when the card is inserted or removed.  The wifi0 and wlan0 devices appear and disappear exactly as expected as well.

The issue arises when applying the various wireless attributes via iwconfig.

I can execute such commands as:

iwconfig wlan0 essid whatever key 1234-5678-90AB-CDEF-1234-5678-90

iwconfig will report that these settigns are successful when I issue iwconfig with no args.

Exactly as expected.  It even reports the MAC of the AP accurately.  But signal level is 0, and  link encap is "UNSPEC"

What gives?

Sadly, it's what got the response.  My other more informative posts were ignored, and I deleted them as there were no responses.

Thanks.

No, just frustration that this is what I had to do to get a response....  My other two useful posts were ignored.  I deleted them.
