Wifi's Gradual Demise

Over the last couple months my wifi started acting up and has now reached the point where it drops and won't come up until rebooting, then drops a short while after that again. It gradually developed problems so i couldn't say which weekly upgrade specifically started it. At first the wifi indicator light started blinking during use, something i recall i configured manually to keep solid at the last install. Then i was getting recoverable network drops which were difficult to pinpoint because another housemate was experimenting with our router configuration. Finally a little over a week ago it dropped and wasn't recoverable without rebooting. The initial problems were about the same time as the sysctl.conf deprecation, but i looked at the file before updating and didn't notice anything i customized.

Looking for netcfg help in the wiki now i notice it has been replaced by netctl. Supposing i'll have to migrate over to get much help on this, i disabled netcfg, uninstalled netcfg and installed netctl. (BTW, although the news item and the wiki mention that netcfg will be uninstalled when intalling netctl, pacman refused to install netctl until i first removed netcfg separately).

Going through the netctl configuration it seems to not be the source of the issue because i am unable to connect manually with wifi. My hard ethernet connection has been unaffected.

Going through the wireless setup wiki;
lspci -k:

...
02:00.0 Network controller: Intel Corporation Centrino Advanced-N 6200 (rev ff)
	Kernel driver in use: iwlwifi
	Kernel modules: iwlwifi
...

and

[root@denkenbett /]# ip link
1: lo: <LOOPBACK,UP,LOWER_UP> mtu 65536 qdisc noqueue state UNKNOWN mode DEFAULT
    link/loopback 00:00:00:00:00:00 brd 00:00:00:00:00:00
2: enp0s25: <BROADCAST,MULTICAST,UP,LOWER_UP> mtu 1500 qdisc pfifo_fast state UP mode DEFAULT qlen 1000
    link/ether f0:de:f1:04:d4:da brd ff:ff:ff:ff:ff:ff
3: wlp2s0: <NO-CARRIER,BROADCAST,MULTICAST,UP> mtu 1500 qdisc mq state DOWN mode DORMANT qlen 1000
    link/ether 00:27:10:de:41:44 brd ff:ff:ff:ff:ff:ff

and

ip link set wlp2s0 up

...echos nothing to the terminal

However, after setting the link down and trying to bring it up after, it returns:

RTNETLINK answers: Connection timed out

The problem seems to show with:

[root@denkenbett /]# dmesg | grep firmware

The firmware is initially loading then later failing to load? Why the second call at all?

The last line repeats ad nauseum.
Should this tell me why my driver is crashing?

the problem appeared after i used the key-combo to turn off wifi (Fn-F5 on a lenovo ideapad)
rfkill tells me the device is unblocked.
i tried to reload iwlwifi and all other modules it depends on.
i tried shutting down the laptop and taking out the battery for some minutes.
there is no bios option that seems related.

the following lines:

can't disable ASPM; OS doesn't have ASPM control

and then repeatedly:

L1 Enabled; Disabling L0S

lead me to belive that the device is in powersaving mode and won't switch to normal state.

but maybe i'm completely wrong. (sorry at this point if the post is unrelated to the thread.)

Re: Wifi's Gradual Demise

I hadn't used  Fn-F5 until i read about it in another troubleshooting thread here a few days ago. I tried it also and since then haven't been able to get wifi to start even after a reboot. Also, sleep and suspend have started crashing more often then they are working. It looks like something is broken with ACPI's implementation? In my case i'm guessing a number of accumulated problems are making the situation too confusing to isolate individual issues and it would be easier to go with a fresh install again.

Re: Wifi's Gradual Demise

I swapped in my hard drive with Windows 7 installed just to have wifi for now, but it is also cutting out now when i do things like plug in a USB drive or wake from sleep. It does come back reliably on reboot, so i'm not sure if that would be some sort of hardware issue, BIOS, or what. I just find myself wishing once again that i hadn't wasted so much money on a Lenovo product...
