telnet <ip> 25 -- doesn't work in X but does work pre-X start?

Ok so this particular phenomenon boggles my mind and I would just like to know why this is occurring.
When I boot my laptop I start-up my network manually and always have, I ping the host and it pans out OK.
Then I'd like to telnet into the machine just to check if the port is up and running and that work just as fine.
Now I start X (xorg-server + awesome) and I start my terminal (xterm). Now I try the same procedure, ping works OK but telnet doesn't...
I quickly kill X and do the same routine without X started and again, works like a charm.

I know the solution to the problem, turns out I had 3 bad records in resolv.conf (8.8.8.8, 192.168.43.1 and another name server which was inaccessible) .
But why would this matter for telnet in X but not outside of it, and more specifically why does resolv.conf even get involved when I use an IP (not a hostname) ?
