mark WiFi as tethered connection

Is it possible to mark certain WiFi connections as WWAN? I want NetworkManager (and software depending on its status) to know if I am online via tethering using a mobile router or my phone. Applications could suspend traffic intensive operations (like upgrades or automatic backups etc.) when I am not using a stationatry WiFi but a mobile hotspot.
