Re: January 2014 Screenshot thread

Enjoying 'herbstluftwm'!

  1. Empty startup (dated later than other screenshots), about to add some more music to playlist; dzen2, tint2, interrobang, mifo.

  2. Doing some basic editing and reading manpage; vim.

  3. Browsing the web; dwb.
    s_1389548723_7900759_3484b82d48.png

  4. Compiling some programs and stopping music to watch a video; mifo, mplayer2.

I'm very satisfied with this setup if you couldn't tell.  Though, I may be changing a few config/script details later on (as usual).

Looks like you're pretty happy using it! I'm glad you're liking it, herbstluft is a really underrated WM... It looks great by the way smile

Also, are you switching to herbstluft or just using it? I've been using bspwm and it works nicely but there are some things that annoy me, like the history feature that works in a really weird way, and the fear that someday baskerville will completely change bspc syntax and I'll have to change all the stuff on configs (it already happened one time tongue)
I've been thinking about stumpwm, I'm not sure yet but probably that's what I'll be using this year...

Well, you may as well say I've switched back to herbstluftwm after trying bspwm for a good run.  I still maintain ebuilds for bspwm (and tools) for gentoo and have it installed but I am just not a dynamic tiler user no matter how much I try to make myself.  I enjoy and work better with manual tiling, so bspwm was a bit of a trial for me.  The main reason I liked it more than other dynamics was because of the "presel" option to split in that direction, etc.  Still, this did not suffice as I like to "stack" windows ontop of each inside a frame.  The great thing about herbstluft is that you can stack them (max) or do the hybrid+dynamic tiling by using a grid mode, etc, inside an individual frame if you want dynamic behavior for certain windows.  Other than that bspwm and herbstluftwm both share many similar features so it's not like I'm losing anything by switching.  In fact, I used herbstluftwm for quite a while before trying bspwm in the first place.

As far as StumpWM, you may or may not recall I used it exclusively for years on end though I am not using it right now.  All the lisp configuration became quite tedious after a while, and I am not an Emacs user so I lose some preset behavioral built-ins and features (Slime + Emacs connectivity and StumpWM control, etc) -- although you can literally make it do whatever you want with or without that stuff.  You can also install the "stumpish" script which is like "bspc" and "herbstclient" for the most part.  As far as window managers, it is still in my top 3.  I have yet to find a more powerful window manager, that's for sure.  I think I still have my old [and quite possibly outdated] configs on dotshare.it (found it)

Thanks, I am enjoying it and glad I'm back at it.   Definitely underrated; I agree with you there!

Sure is big_smile

EDIT:  Although, I love using Bloom's `sxhkd' key daemon instead of herbstluft's building keybinding stuff.  Definitely worth setting up.

Re: January 2014 Screenshot thread

@neopuff, welcome to the Arch forums!  You should know that there are guidelines to posting pictures.  I have a feeling that your post there might be a bit large for these boards.  The Forum Etiquette guidelines are a bit sparse.  But fortunately in the first post of every month's screenshot thread, there are some great and more detailed instructions about how to post pictures.

Haha, sure, glad you like them!

Link: .dir_colors (ls colors)
Link: Xresources (Xdefaults)
Link: cottonmouse.vim (vim colorscheme)

Think that's everything?  My dzen bar(s) sources my Xresources so the colors should be the same, although for dzen I manually added a few more greys for the shading.  If there's something I missed just let me know.  Most configurations can be found on my github page [dotfiles repo].

Re: January 2014 Screenshot thread

I'm kind of new to linux and started off with Arch. Have been doing just great with no need for help so far and I'm loving the distro! :-)

I have put some hours into making the conky setup - inspired by others, but made entirely by me, and it's still a WIP - will be customized for next month wink

So let me introduce to you - my desktop smile
