fglrx installation requires that the system have kernel headers. /lib/modules/3.12.7-2-ARCH/build/include/linux/version.h cannot be found on this system.
I ran pacman -S linux-headers, and completed the installation but I got the same error again. What might be the cause of it?
Cheers.
Hello,
try following the instructions on the wiki : https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/AMD_Catalyst
If you're new to arch, you might find the wiki really helpful for any problem you might run into
Allright, but this is not the precise answer. Although I did a kernel update, I am still missing version.h header and receive the error.
For your suggestion, I added these servers to pacman.conf but it says it cannot update because these servers are broken

If you installed the catalyst package, it will probably have a different version of headers packaged, but that depends on which version of linux-headers Vi0L0 built the current version of catalyst against.
My advice, go with the catalyst-hook package, enable the catalyst-hook and be done with it.

If you installed the catalyst package, it will probably have a different version of headers packaged, but that depends on which version of linux-headers Vi0L0 built the current version of catalyst against.
My advice, go with the catalyst-hook package, enable the catalyst-hook and be done with it.
OK, I shall go with catalyst-hook.
However, no I receive

I'm totally confused now. I added servers to pacman.conf, updated it with -Syu. I also installed base-devel with pacman -S base-devel, updated the kernel to its current version.

deleting both amdpcsdb and amdpcsdb.current does nothing for me. When I start the X server again they are re-created and OpenGL still doesn't work with Kwin.
And apparently amdpcsdb is just a link to /dev/shm/amdpcs.current.

Doesn't seem like a catalyst related issue. As far as I know systemctl should work out of the box on arch, it will be part of part of base I think, not base-devel.

More like a need of installing catalyst-hook package.

If it's installed then there's some problem with a filesystem or a system itself.

Hello,
I have an issue on a laptop with one of AMD Mobility Radeon series cards. I have recently updated system there, which included updating the fglrx drivers from the catalyst repository (I am using catalyst-stable). Also, I have installed the xorg server from xorg114 repository. However, when I am booting up the system and it starts the X server, it results in a blank black screen (no backlight on) and the system becomes unresponsive (switching to console or any other actions do not work). The X server is configured to start with systemd' s graphical.target and the kdm.service. I have seen, that many people had similar problems, none of which solved the issue. If anyone knows something about this problem, please help.
P. S. The X server with the fglrx drivers seems to load up all right, no error nor warning messages in the logs.

It looks like peptid is using ati's installer, not catalyst-hook, mkinitcpio won't work. While being here I have realized that... let me quote...
Vi0L0 wrote:@snack:
you can turn off the hook with:catalyst_build_module hookrm
but yes, it could be a good idea to leave mkinitcpio untached when installing catalyst-hook and leave user decide if he needs it or not. It should be done with the next catalyst-hook update (although upgrading will not disable it, so you would run mentioned command on your own).
... that leaving mkinitcpio untouched after catalyst-hook' instalation will cause `mkinitcpio -p linux` to not generate fglrx module. Keep it in mind please, especially when suggesting this to newcomers, because the day of catalyst-hook' update is getting closer every day ;P.
catalyst_build_module all
will still work though, faster than mkinitcpio.
Ah thanks.. sorry... didn't notice
Also, didn't know about the catalyst_build_module all (I always did an extra initram build weee

Maybe it's something with the backlight. Have you tried to light up the screen with an external source of light like a strong lamp?

If steam was not working before then it's not a good point of reference. As for the steam maybe there's some useful info within its log file.
As for the original problem does fglrxinfo and glxinfo return proper values? Is glxgears working?

If steam was not working before then it's not a good point of reference. As for the steam maybe there's some useful info within its log file.

I already posted this in another thread called "Steam seg faulting at start" in post #10:

glxgears is working fine as glxgears32 is. Yesterday i played Strike Suit Zero to test opengl and its working great ... except for kwin and steam :<

Hi, I seem to be having an issue with loading the fglrx module:

Both linux and catalyst are the latest versions from the core and catalyst repositories respectively, and I've rebooted since doing the upgrade. So as far as I can tell it seems to be a compatibility issue, but if that's true I'm surprised nobody else has mentioned it yet.

Are you using the catalyst package or one of the other packages like catalyst-hook? Personally I prefer catalyst-hook because I can generate modules for newer (sometimes patched) kernels before Vi0L0 can re-package Catalyst for the new kernel updates.
Claire is fine.
Problems? I have dysgraphia, so clear and concise please.

@Vi0l0: what about dropping catalyst in favor of catalyst-hook or dropping catalyst-hook and port its functionalities into catalyst? Hook works beautifully and plain catalyst seems to give only headaches to users and maintenance burden for you...

On the mentioned thread you wrote that the steam problem disappeared after making changes in your monitors/xorg.conf setup. Is it helping/changing anything for kwin? Can you see some related errors in ~/.xsession-errors?

I left catalyst inside the repo so it could serve people who encountered problems with module compilation. Aeons ago (you may remember snack ;-)) people had such problems, but lately I haven't seen any of that kind.
catalyst-hook is away from the Arch Way, and I don't want to promote it via changing it name into catalyst (replaces @ catalyst-hooks PKGBUILD would be enough).
Maybe it's a good idea to simply remove catalyst from the repos (not from the AUR)? What do you think? Would anyone miss it?

I remember, old friend, I remember
Nowadays I think that hook is just fully functional, it didn't fail a single time for me (I'm on catalyst-hd234k, maybe non-legacy users have experienced some problem recently?). About the Arch way: automatically compiling a needed module is KISS in my opinion, not doing it is an unnecessary complication so the opposite of KISS. I'd drop catalyst and keep only catalyst-hook: it will save your time and avoid confusion for newcomers.
Other thoughts?
Edit: the only problem may be that using catalyst-hook will pull linux-headers as a dependency. Will anyone complain about having the headers installed? I don't think so...

Sadly changing xorg.conf doesn't help kwin, i tried this before...
I'll have a look at ~/.xsession-errors tonight, maybe i'll find some useful info there.
Thanks for the help

As catalyst-hook is preferred I switched to it, and it solved my issue. Thanks!

Catalyst-hook has been working great for me since I ditched the open source driver. I've done three kernel updates so far and it's worked perfectly.

So, I got bored today and decided to give 3.13-mainline a spin, along with the radeon and then AMD Catalyst on my Radeon 6480G card.
Basically, the radeon drivers DPM was better, but I'm sticking with Catalyst because of the 3D performance.
Claire is fine.

Ok, so yesterday I've removed catalyst package from the repo, catalyst-hook should replace it .
Please note that while installing it is no longer adding hook to the mkinitcpio (update won't change hooks state, so if it was working before it will work after the update).
If you like this feature you can turn it on with:
catalyst_build_module hookadd
I've also added linux and linux-headers dependencies to the package.
About the Arch way: automatically compiling a needed module is KISS in my opinion, not doing it is an unnecessary complication so the opposite of KISS. I'd drop catalyst and keep only catalyst-hook: it will save your time and avoid confusion for newcomers.
Now, after removing hook from the install procedure, catalyts-hook doesn't change any system file on its own - so it's closer to the arch way than it ever was.
Still created fglrx modules are left without the (package) owner, so it's breaking old Arch Way that i used to know - but it's just a clarification, nothing really important, i know at least one big package which is behaving in same way, i mean dkms.

Just a little question for Vi0l0 .... I am using catalyst-test package from AUR.
I want to do some test with cgminer and I need opencl ... is opencl included in catalyst-test?
