Setting up a firewall using one port and IP aliases?

I would like to put a Linux firewall in front of my 'net connection and also use it to do routing, dns cache, dhcp, etc.  Would it be safe to use a single interface and set up everything using IP aliasing, or should I use two physical interfaces?  If two interfaces, why?
