Samba Share over Internet

I have read various websites about the security of Samba shares, and they generally do not have many good things to say about Samba.
I need a way to share files with many people over the internet without requiring them to download it before they use it.

Is it safe to use Samba over the internet? There are no private files and I will most likely not need a password at all on it.
The only security requirement is that other people should not be able to write to it.
Are there any other methods that would be better? It needs to be accessible from Windows XP and 7, and the user should not need to download all the files before they can use them.

What kind of files are we talking about? Movies, spreadsheets, text documents?

Re: Samba Share over Internet

Do you want them to be able to play the game that's installed on another computer?
From what Google has told me about Halo Custom Edition you need to install it to play, it's not a flash game you can play in a browser.

Re: Samba Share over Internet

Well, we put the installed copy of Halo on the school's local Samba share and it works like that, so it should also work on the Internet share.
