hi

I hope this is in the right section.(I'm not sure)
I noticed that in the new skype 4.2.0.13-2 the sound doesn't work.
so I downgraded, but I would like to know if someone else has this problem and/or a different workaround (because I don't like downgraded programms).

Did you check the logs etc to find out ?

I have no idea why it doesn't work. with the older skype it works.

This was the only change [1]. It was changed because, sound was not working properly [2-3] and what was changed was a workaround to begin with [4].

That said, skype (multilib) is working fine for me with usb headsets.

Also working fine for me. When you say the sound doesn't work, do you mean the microphone? If so have you checked whether that works on its own (if your using pulse using e.g. pavucontrol)?

I tested it using the Skype Test call. I got no sound. so I can't say if my microphone worked.
I use pulse, and other appclications (like clementine and the older skype) work fine so it shouldn't be an issue with my speakers.

I now use skype-4.2.0.11-3

So the problem is that you don't hear anything, right? So I guess the "test sound" button also doesn't produce anything. Are the "sound devices" in the skype configuration menu set correctly?

I get the same behavior. Downgrading to the previous version works.

I have all sound devices set to PulseAudio Server (local). Neither the test sound button nor the test call work although when I open pavucontrol, Skype comes up as a program actively playing back sound, it's just that no sound comes out. This is using normal 3.5mm builtin sound card jacks.

I also tried removing ~/.Skype to no avail.

In that case I would try to kill pulseaudio and start it from a console so I could see all the messages, make it verbose if you have to. Then also start skype from a console and check the output messages.

I suppose that with both outputs you may find some indication of what might be wrong, things should work without workarounds. The alternative is for you to add back what was removed, skype is not updated very frequently so it shouldn't be much of a maintenance burden to do that change yourself (only if needed).

newest skype version doesn't work either for me (I can't hear anything). restarting pulse, X, ... also does not help.

previous version (skype-4.2.0.13-1-x86_64.pkg.tar.xz, md5 3dfee44fc589b98c24159f2ade62d0aa) works though.

The newest version of skype works for me, but I use alsa and no pulseaudio.

The PA devs recommended value is PULSE_LATENCY_MSEC=60 which is a big enough buffer to fix most problems

This was closed upstream as "some weird Skype bug" which I can believe :-)

I don't mind having to hack the PULSE_LATENCY_MSEC=30 back in.
