Continuation from the 2012 thread HERE.
Take the survey to find out what the most popular apps are.
For each category, the list of available choices were taken from ArchWiki - List of Applications.
There are 27 questions.

So we're not doing lnf awards anymore? It's most popular apps now? Also, how could it be of 2014; what happened to 2013? Anyways my vote for 2013 would have to go to speedcrunch calculator app for sure if that's not on there.

Links are fixed.
The past years' ones weren't LnF, since users vote based on what apps they're using, regardless of whether it's "light and fast" or not. So it really is just a popularity contest that'll go on throughout next year.

Gotcha okay. My vote is in. Interesting results so far. I do like this poll and the previous years. Thanks. Was unsure about mplayer as I use smplayer so noted it. Guess it would be a bit much to list all of the mplayer gui font ends maybe.

Voted. I have to say, I was shocked by the number of yaourt users and by the small showing of connman users. (there's always self-selection bias in surveys like this, but still)

God, it's like yaourt users EVERYWHERE... I'm really surprised by it as well.

i3 users are popular (tallies with the trend on the G+ community for Arch).

Yeah, that didn't terribly shock me, but I so rarely hear positive things about yaourt anymore, I figured it was declining in use; perhaps this survey just caught the exact subset of yaourt users or perhaps I was just mistaken.

I think everyone not using Arch, comes to Arch with the misconception that yaourt is the only way to install from AUR. Maybe that's the effect of having a name that is so unique. That's why people start with yaourt and over time realize there are better AUR helpers out there and then switch

The first time I tried Arch, the WIki made me believe, that the best idea would be to use that unofficial repo, install yaourt and use it to handle the AUR. Maybe it's a systemic issue.

If I remember correctly, the Wiki gave me the impression that yaourt was the easiest way to install from the AUR (and it is really easy to do just that), but I got bored with that, started playing around with PKGBUILDs, adopted packages. After that, yaourt just didn't cut it anymore and I moved to makepkg.

The problem is exacerbated by the fact that you just add a repo to your pacman.conf and away you go. You never actually have to learn how to use makepkg, therefore you just treat AUR like the official repos. This isn't, IMO, helpful nor smart.

Maybe we should change the wiki where it says "use yaourt" and simply direct them to another page which list all AUR helpers and let the user decide which one he/she wants to use.

I'm one of those unwashed yaourt users. I've been using Arch for seven years and while I appreciate the purity of using makepkg, there are a number of AUR packages I use on a daily basis (e.g. emacs-org-mode and virtualbox-ext-oracle) that I would just as soon treat as official. A quick "yaourt -Syua" and I'm good to go. I maintain one AUR package, so I build, install, and test it with makepkg on one machine, then quickly use yaourt to update it everywhere else. Quick, convenient, and works for me ...

Actually yaourt and the other helpers aren't already mentioned very often in the wiki because of Help:Style#AUR_packages.

What's the exact sense behind NONE?

For instance, if I use Stacking/Floating Window Manager, why should it bother me how many people do not use any? Instead I am interested in the alternatives amongst Stacking/Floating Window Managers. Personally I find NONE distracting.

You have the die hards who don't bother with WMs and DEs. I went through that phase last year because it all I did was type and I wanted to minimise my time to get to a text editor as much as I could.
