There is a package off AUR I would like to edit the contents of before installing. I use yaourt to get the packages. How would I go about editing a file inside of the package before it's installation?

Next time; choose a title that actually describes your issue. Second; yaourt asks if you want to edit a file from the package before creating it. I'm guessing you don't want to edit the PKGBUILD or another file included in the package? Then you'd need to create a patch and add that to the PKGBUILD

So, I used yaourt -g and have the PKGBUILD and have the .install, but how do I get the actual tar?

No idea if yaourt can do what you need i.e. download the upstream source and then stop, but makepkg can - the man page has the details.

Can you tell me how to go about this? I'm going nuts over here.

man makepkg | less -p patchOffline
Why are you going nuts? What have you read so far, and what have you tried so far? What worked, or didn't work? What error output did you get?
If you want help, provide details. Around here, we don't just tell people how to do stuff. Make an effort, and we'll help you along.

You can visit the Aur website, find the package you are looking for download the tarball (the link is on the right hand side of the page), untar it in a directory, then run makepkg and install it using pacman -U foo.tar.xz. You can find more info here.

How about you start with the wiki page about the AUR. Everything is explained there and on the links found there.

This is just my own curiosity, but what package is it and what do you want to change in it?

When I was using yaourt I did something very simple in order to interrupt the build process:
Simply execute a shell, e.g. "bash || return 1" as the first command in the build() function, do your editing and then "exit" when you are ready to build. If you want to abort the build, quit the shell with "exit 1"

This worked like a charm! Very simple and straight-forward. Was exactly what I was looking for. Thank you progandy!!
